Founded in 1964 in France, the Sofitel brand currently has more than 200 properties worldwide. Rooted in native culture, the luxury hotel celebrates Bastille Day each year with a French themed event. For a powerful centerpiece, Sofitel hired Chicago street artist Rawooh to create a French inspired mural for their Magnificent Mile location. The artwork, which currently sits on curved glass at the hotel entrance, marks Sofitel’s second Bastille Day partnership with the artist.

For an image rich in French Culture, Rawooh recreated the symbolic female figure Marianne, a character with omnipresence throughout the history of France. The artist added some light brand work by incorporating the hotels logo as an earring and Chicago stars on Marianne’s Phrygian cap, a hat that became associated with the French revolution in 1978.

While most exterior murals in Chicago are found on either brick or cement, this creation is currently one of the only multi-story pieces of street art found on glass. The artwork will be on view for until mid fall.
