It’s no surprise if similar features run in the family—genes take care of that. But “Alabama jokes” aside, how do you explain couples that look like siblings? Perhaps spending too much time together makes couples look alike, or we tend to date people physically similar to us.
The Instagram account about the “Siblings or Dating” quiz brought to light a fantastic and super addictive siblings or dating game for bored people on social media. The account has been around since July, making 249k followers wonder whether two people are family-related or simply dating based solely on one photo.
So, let’s play this game that might quickly become your favorite. Spoiler alert: you might be wrong most of the time. Let us know in the comments how many pics you will get right and what gave them away.

Why Do Some Couples Look Like Brother and Sister?
Couples that look alike might sound quirky, but there are a few scientific reasons behind their resemblance:
- The mere exposure effect: We tend to choose partners with similar traits instinctively, preferring faces and features we're already familiar with, including similar physical appearance.
- Copycat partners: Couples naturally mirror each other's expressions and body language over time, which can make them look like they grew up together. Scientists confirm that partners influence each other's habits throughout long-term relationships, much like siblings who share a household.
- Love glow: Mutual happiness makes couples radiate similarly, leading us to perceive them as more alike. Psychologist Robert Zajonc's 1987 study suggested lifestyle and compatibility play a role, though clinical evidence for actual face-shifting remains thin.
- Perception: Even after removing external features like hairstyle, experiments show couples are still perceived as facially similar. The New York Post even coined a term for it: "doppelbangers."
- Personality and age: Couples that look alike are also perceived as similar in personality and age, both of which independently contribute to facial similarity.
Looking alike doesn't guarantee compatibility, but it's a fun twist in any love story. Real connection comes from shared values, communication, and understanding.

this is fun. it's said that some people subconsciously look for partners, who look like them (famous example: victoria and david beckham. look for a side by side comparision of them. it's amazing). sometimes even pets and their owners look alike. funny and interesting.

It's a fun game where you look at a picture and decide if they look more like siblings or a couple. It's difficult because many of the sibling couples are posing more how you might imagine a couple to look, and because many couples seem to have very similar faces. I know it's confusing.

Did it really take people that long to crack the code? Same-sex, look identical = dating. In four out of 5 cases anyway. By #19, they tried to use reverse reverse logic; the cake announcing the twins' birthdays should have been the tip-off, but they just looked so gay. "Not that there's anything wrong w---" Wait! They're brothers! There sure as hell WOULD be something wrong with it!

When I started I thought "Here comes the banjo music" and started to scroll through slowly. I got about 2 thirds correct when I started looking at the body language instead of their looks.

I got a pretty high score, maybe 8/10. Just had to clarify my immediate guess and the guess the opposite. Also, people are comfortable with very different things. None of the siblings contact is strange to me, also not surprising people think it is.

the people who say that siblings aren’t allowed to touch each other affectionally CLEARLY don’t have siblings. my sister and i are 4 years apart and we still change and shower together. we hug a lot (when we’re not arguing) and just because i put my hand on her knee or she slaps my chest doesn’t mean we’re less of siblings than ones that aren’t. some siblings also kiss between themselves or with their parents (we don’t, but no judgement) and it’s definitely a cultural thing. stop judging others just because you’re not used to it, and don’t say something is weird, like these posts, if youre an only child.
