People Create 14 Memes Celebrating Female Actresses In Response To ‘Sexist’ Tweet About Kirsten Dunst
We all have favorite actors and actresses. I’m a big fan of Keanu Reeves and Emma Stone, for example — they’re both breathtaking, and if I had to rate them, I’d give them both an easy ‘A.’ Legendary actress Kirsten Dunst has a massive following, and it’s no wonder — she’s very capable, and plays her roles well.
Dunst recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is a humongous honor for any actor out there. However, when Reuters reported on the story, they tweeted out that Dunst was “best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend.” This created a massive backlash and the internet community branded the tweet as ‘sexist’. Not only that, but this entire affair gave birth to a whole new meme that celebrated how amazingly versatile actresses are.
Reuters posted a tweet about Kirsten Dunst that caused a massive backlash online

Internet users started explaining why Dunst was much more than just “Spiderman’s girlfriend”
Twitter users came up with a new meme to celebrate how versatile actresses are
The essence of the meme is to show that Dunst and other actresses are far more adept at their jobs than some would believe they are. Internet users were quick to jump on the meme express and gave a whole slew of examples of how actresses could do male actors’ roles in films, but the reverse wouldn’t be true.
Dunst, who is now 37, has done a lot of amazing projects throughout her career, and she definitely deserves her Hollywood star. Her debut came in 1989 when she played a role in Woody Allen’s film New York Stories (one of my favorites). She then garnered a lot of attention after playing Claudia in Interview with the Vampire, which came to a theatre near you in 1994.
Among Dunst’s many, many roles is also the epic Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Perhaps Reuters thought that’s the role most people remember and that’s why they mentioned it in their tweet?
Dunst also played Peggy Blumquist in the awesome TV series Fargo in 2015, and in 2017, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in Hidden Figures. Her two most recent film appearances were in The Beguiled and in Woodshock. The internet’s backlash forced Reuters to delete their tweet about Dunst.
Dear Pandas, what do you think about this situation? Do you think Reuters was wrong to say Dunst was best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend? What do you think of the internet’s reaction? Which memes do you think have the most truth in them? Take part in the discussion and leave us a comment below.
That meme comparing male to female actors is kinda dumb. Imo Gary Oldman could totally do The Devil Wears Prada.
He's a fantastic actor. I don't think I'd recognize him if I passed him on the street, he just completely becomes whoever he's playing.
Agreed 100%! Definitely one of the most versatile actors out there!!

Absolutely agree. I kind of shrugged off the other comparisons, but Gary Oldman could hands down do Devil Wears Prada and Anne Hathaway would support him all the way. Cos they are awesome people.
And Christian Bale could do pretty much anything he set his mind to. This isn't about male actors vs. female actors. This is about how the media furthers outdated gender roles.
I totally agreed... Gary Oldman is totally amazing and should have already won an Oscar back in 1992 with Dracula, the movie itself isn't great, but his acting, his performance as Dracula was mind blowing... every movie you see with him you don't see Gary Oldman, you only see the character. From Dracula to Darkest Hour, including The Fifth Element, Hannibal, Leon The Professional, the Harry Potter movies, the Nolan's Batman movies and even his voicing jobs, like in Kung Fu Panda 2 are just amazing...
Just what I thought. Especially in todays society where love has no labels. I would totally watch a male version of the devil wears prada (doesn't matter if the male part is straight or gay). And not only that movie. Nearly all of the mentioned could be remade with male protagonists.
I was thinking the same thing, Al P, Nick C, and Gary could all totally pull off 'feminine' roles. It's all about the actors talents not about what they have, or don't have, for dangly bits >..>
I agree! And while I am in full agreement that women can fit any role, I dont think that people should try to insult male actors.
I too think trying to fight sexism with sexism is hypocritical and really stupid. Btw. Bryan Cranston could totally do Cersei Lannister (no pun intended).
I just scrolled down to say the same about Gary Oldman! He is my all-time favorite actor. He's a genius.
I agree...Julie Andrews probably wouldn’t be the best choice for Terminator
Although I *would* want to watch a few minute's worth of her trying...!
Indeed. Nicholas Cage would have improved Moulin Rouge no end with a dose of lunacy.
Agreed!
I WAS THINKING THE EXACT SAME!!! Gary: challenge accepted.
Lmbo you went left field
And, sorry, not buying Ann Hathaway as Churchill...
Bryan Cranston could easily play Cersei Lannister...I'd like to see that.
Absolutely - I thought exactly the same thing.
I'm totally on board with gender equality but this thread is the opposite of that. Any good actor could make any role work. Arnold couldn't play Mary Poppins? What about Kindergarten Cop? Please dont turn gender equality into male hate. That's not productive. It's a destructive mind set. Males and females need each other to continue the species; we just need to treat each other right. Let's start by not telling others what they're capable of based on sexual organs.
And where did you see male hate? All I see is a bunch of people emphasizing how "feminine" roles are underappreciated. When a man plays someone "manly" e.g. Terminator, James Bond, he gets the praise. But when women play someone "feminine", everyone pretends like it's easy. "Oh, it's easy for them to play gfs, nannies, mothers... they are women". They just ask more appreciation for female roles by comparing them to man. "Think it's easy to sing, and dance, and play the nanny at the same time... imagine Arnold do it. Doesn't look so easy now, does it?" But when actresses do it, we pretend like its no big deal. This has to stop.
I think it also says something about how women can do "manly" things, but men can't do "feminine" things or else they'll be mocked for it. Like how women can wear pants with no problem, but men can't wear skirts/and dresses without a lot of people being grossed out by it. Being a woman is "weak", so it's okay if a woman takes on a masculine role that makes her stronger, but if a man takes on a feminine role, then he looks weak and stupid.
You're absolutely right. Women shouldn't only be cast as wives, girlfriends, nurses... I'm saying let's not make a thread emphasizing "a male couldnt." We need to stop telling people what they cant do. Let's celebrate director/producers that break stereotypes. Workin Moms is full of men in sensitive male supportive roles. Charlize Theron tore up the desert in Mad Max
Men will never understand the centuries that have led us to this point
Could Kirsten Dunst play Conan the barbarian? ;) These comparisons are really dumb and don't help.
Can Kirstin Dunst play a fantasy barbarian woman? Of course she could! Shes a fit young woman, she could bulk up a bit for the role just like other celebrities do, get some hard lines and muscle definition. I'd watch that movie
Completely agree, Patrick James.
This comment doesen't have many upvotes, but it should! This is so true!
Frankly, I know her best as spiderman's girlfriend....
We don’t get to choose what people best remember us for. It’s why many people don’t remember me as a father and upstanding citizen. But as the kid that shit himself in the grade concert.
Is that where your username comes from? ;)
Opposite. Now in fear I over use good smells. Too strong. An extremely good smell that drives people away oh the irony!!
