When the first person thanked me after I took his photo in Cuba, I was surprised. When the second person thanked me, I thought it was a coincidence. By the time the third person thanked me, I knew this reaction was about more than just a photo.
Most Cubans have only had internet for little over a year, so the idea that people from around the world might see their photos is a new, thrilling concept to them. In many cases, this is the first time these people have “shared” their faces with a community outside of their own.
