9-Year-Old Dog Who Spent 280 Days At Shelter Has Only One Wish: To Find Home This Christmas

Meet Boss, the senior shelter dog whose only wish for Christmas is that someone adopts him. The 9-year-old pooch found himself homeless when his family couldn’t take care of him anymore. The Staffordshire spaniel mix has spent more than 280 days at the Atlanta Humane Society (AHS). The whole situation was just too heartbreaking for the shelter staff to watch, so they decided to spread the word about the lonely doggie – right in time for Christmas…

“His name, Boss, fits because when we walk around the neighborhood people look at him with respect and admiration because of how dignified he looks… But really his name could be Cupcake … He is sweetness dog-ified,” his foster mom  Deborah Lareau told The Dodo.

According to the latest news, the search for forever home is going really well so far. AHS writes: “He met with a potential new family today and is going to meet two potential dog siblings tomorrow to see how they get along… None of this would have been possible without you all sharing him, and we can’t thank you enough!”. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the doggie and we hope he gets to enjoy plenty of snuggles with his new owners this Christmas.

I adopted an 8 year old Dachshound mix from an animal shelter, it was my best decision. Now she is 10 years old sweetie :) She has doggie friends, lot of love :)

I've had a dachshund ever since I was born. She passed away in June, but I understand how amazingly sweet the breed is.

Sadly, this isn't very special news. My now 10-year-old dog was waiting for adoption for more than a year before we adopted him, and as I have volunteered in an animal shelter I've witnessed several dogs who had to stay for a very long time, mostly senior dogs.

Ambivalent feelings here: facilitating adoption always is worthwhile, but I am not fond of "animals for christmas". I do not have statistics for this, but would guess that animals given as christmas gifts can be split into two groups afterwards: the most beloved ones, and the ones soon being brought to a shelter (after cooled down interest in them).

However, if the people have the mentality to get rid of them, they will dump them at a shelter (or on the streets) no matter when the pets were acquired (Christmas, birthday, normal Monday). Those that are committed to the raising of a pet will not just abandon them. I rescued two cats in two foreign countries. When I left each, I got the necessary paperwork, shots, and flew them home with me. The time of year is of little matter. The character of the owner is the most important factor.

The adoption of this pooch would comprise the true meaning of Christmas: not "getting" a dog (as if a non-human animal was an object), but giving a creature in need a home and sharing with it all your love and kindness. Fingers crossed for you, Boss!
