Art is supposed to challenge us. Challenge our beliefs, our prejudices and even our concepts of what we believe to be possible.
Sculptures are a great medium for this, as they allow the artist to play tricks on the eye and mess with the viewer’s concepts of logic. This collection of sculptures, compiled by Bored Panda, do just that. Calling into question the laws of gravity and physics they make you wonder, how the heck did they do that? From incredible feats of balance on a grand scale, to just plain head-scratching sorcery, this list has it all!
Scroll down to below to check them out for yourself, and prepare to be bamboozled by these gorgeous and gravity defying pieces. Don’t forget to upvote your faves!

The Force Of Nature By Lorenzo Quinn
Everything about this sculpture is so mesmerizing, the color, the wrinkles/waves on dress, the shining globe, background. Can be printed, framed and put on desk.
I see her as spinning the ball and trancifical force

I am the "Lady of the Sea" and Earth can not survive without my tides.
Wire Fairies By Robin Wight
These are nicely done. They took me out of the ordinary world for a minute. I would like to go and see them myself; it is hard to imagine exactly how they look from a few photos.
The best part about these amazing sculptures is that they move with the wind !! =) https://youtu.be/tyO0HG72aEg
Wursa By Daniel Firman
Thank goodness it's not just me, I would be literally tiptoeing up to it then run past like the clappers!
Load More Replies...That sculpture uses its own dedicated floor as the structural base, you can see the difference in the flooring. I bet the artist layed down a strong base with a rod, and the elephant itself is probably made of a really lightweight medium. My guess.

Is anyone else seeing the bird representing hope? Or am I just weird?
You are not weird you just have a beautiful way of looking at the World.
Load More Replies...Idea here is, if you are completely down you need something to help you lift yourself up, something what gives you hope and then you will rise again!
Floating Stone By Smaban Abbas
Thanks to creative people, world gets interesting every day. Also, big thanks to internet to bring these creative things to our homes.
Right down to the slack in the rope on the upper stone. Pure creativity!!
This is sooo cool! It’s like an invisible sting pulling it up (I hope that’s not the case)
There is a little face on the bottom rock... graffiti or purposeful?
Coffee Kiss By Johnson Tsang
Take My Lighting But Don't Steal My Thunder By Alex Chinneck
The top half of the building is made of a very light material, and then attached to the green kiosk on the right. Floating-H...5a24d1.jpg
Besides the fact the sculpture is made out of very light materials, the support structure for the upper part is actually hidden in the green "shack" at right. 1546010588...e7dc_b.jpg
Built from a steel frame and filcor, a type of expanded polystyrene, the 12-metre-long structure took 500 hours to shape using digital carving techniques and was painted to replicate the appearance of the existing building on the site. A four-tonne counterweight enables the suspension of the top half of the fake building. https://www.dezeen.com/2014/10/02/alex-chinneck-take-my-lightning-but-dont-steal-my-thunder-levitating-house-covent-garden/ Chinneck's architectural tricks are legendary. Google his name and see.
Les Voyageurs By Bruno Catalano
Book Sculptures By Alicia Martin
The same could be said for many materials used in sculpture..... wood, fabric, leather, gold.... art is art!
Load More Replies...It is interesting that somebody with the architectural knowledge to build a structure sturdy enough to support something like this would dedicate her life to something so ephemeral as temporary art displays. People are amazing and mysterious.
Couldn't agree more Devin Robinson lol! The horror! No way I'm showing my partner this one, I'd come home one day to find all my precious books flowing out their room 😱
Wurf VI By Anna Borgman And Candy Lenk
Imagine, walking by this building and casually looking up, scared to death, scarred for life.
It's probably made out of something very lightweight, like polystyrene foam, which works rather well to mimic stone, and then was affixed to a platform, which was bolted to the deck.

Imagine how the people who live in the apartment it's in front of feel whenever they go onto their balcony!
Hyper-Realistic Illusions Carved Out Of Wood By Tom Eckert
This is done so well that my mind that I can never believe that's wood unless I touch it ... My mind deceives me so much !
It is carved out of wood and painted but it looks like fabric

This one is in Brussels (in Molenbeek to be precise !) And the guy falling is a policeman ( that's their old uniform they don't dress like that anymore) That statue is about defying authority :) (http://www.tomfrantzen.be/en/artr.htm)
no it's the name given to the people who were born in Molenbeek (literally "de vaart" means "the canal" and "kapoen" means cheeky) (http://www.tomfrantzen.be/en/artr.htm)

Does it represent destruction after war? or Steps and window to nowhere? Oblivion?
Cue the music please..."How you gonna keep them down on the ground after they've seen Leandro Erlich?"
Balancing Sculptures By Jerzy Kędziora
I think you can see these sculptures in Kraków, Poland, on Bernatka bridge:)
How do they get it so they don't swing down ? .. Nevermind I will just enjoy and wonder from here.
I was wondering the same thing, what if the wind blows a little harder? Really interesting nonetheless.
Load More Replies...The first picture has another arm in the background. A tightrope walker?
Enjoyed all of them. I can kinda, sorta, figure how most of them were done but not this one. Even if everything else is solid and welded it still ought to twist at the tree. I'm stumped, amazed and loving it.
Imagine looking up and seeing this person up there, not moving, then realizing it’s a statue. I would be scared that it would fall on me. Anyone else feel this way?
That is the question I was looking for. Someone please answer.

Pentateuque By Fabien Mérelle
Here in the US, the elephant represents the Republican Party. I'm not saying this sculpture has anything to do with that--I'm just sayin'.
The Virgins Of Apeldoorn By Elisabet Stienstra
What is wrong with you guys CLEARLY these are statues depicting the torture of Muggles by Deatheaters!!! This is just another example of how the MoM is turning their head away from actual problems!!!
oooh... kind of creepy. imagine walking by these at night and not knowing they're statues...
Looks like the death eaters are at it again…someone fire the Dark Mark
Monte-Meubles, L’Ultime Déménagement - Leandro Erlich
Stone Balancing By Adrian Gray
Abedo By Emil Alzamora
I feel like making the lower half solid & the upper hollow would make this work. Execution is what baffles me. I don't know how one would achieve such clean lines if that's what they did.

Giant Ferris wheel in background, makes this image more interesting!
Saw this one too! The building behind it is Shell Centre, I used to work there. It's just opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, and yes that's the London Eye behind it :)

To complete the optical illusion, the people should be standing on the shadow--and it would be safer as well.

Natalie Stamilla sculpture of Michale Jones scoring the first try of the first Rugby World Cup 1987.NOT Jerzy Kędziora
La Voiture Sur Le Lampadaire By Benedetto Bufalino
i was going to say this looks fake, but after doing a google search with artist name i was able to find a few other pictures from different angles.
Wait, _this_ is the one that looks fake to you? This one looks like the easiest to accomplish to me....

I enjoyed this post tremendously. I would love to see more posts like these on BP! 'The Force of Nature' took my breath away.
You have the wrong name on Natalie Stamilla's sculpture of the rugby place Michael Jones at Eden Park in Auckland. Not Jerzy Kędziora
These kinds of posts, which seem to be further and few between, are my favourite. I wish there was more art and less celebrity clap-backs and overheard conversations.
Fabulous there are some very clever and talented people with fantastic imaginations..
