Student Gets Criticized By Neighbor As She’s Not A Nurse But Is Wearing Scrubs, Seeks Advice Online
There are many attributes of various professions and hobbies that have become firmly established in everyday life by people who have nothing to do with them. For example, if we see a person in sneakers on the street, it doesn’t actually mean that they just came from the basketball court. Or wearing yoga pants does not mean doing yoga.
And yet there are still situations in which people try to identify others by external attributes – and, having made a mistake, begin to angrily and with rapture brand them ‘imposters.’ For example, this happened to the author of today’s story, whom a neighbor mistakenly took for a nurse just because of them wearing scrubs at home.

Turns out some people don’t take too kindly to others wearing job-related uniforms or else they risk being blamed of being imposters

The author of the post worked in a pet store for years and they’ve got a few pairs of scrubs and eventually they left this job and started college

When they went outside to check the mailbox recently, the neighbor spotted them and assumed they were a nurse

After getting a ‘no,’ the neighbor lashed out at the author, claiming they were ‘stealing valor’
So, five years ago, when the Original Poster (OP) was still in high school, they found themselves a part-time job as a kennel technician at a pet store. The author didn’t do anything specific in their job there, they simply helped the vet to take care of the puppies. Nevertheless, at work, the OP received a few pairs of scrubs.
Perhaps the store owner wanted all the employees to look “medical,” maybe there was some other reason – we don’t know and probably never will. And it actually doesn’t matter – especially since the OP left this job after starting college.
The author liked the job, but it wasn’t high-paid, and they really wanted to do without student loans and whatnot. So the OP quit, but they kept part of the uniform. They gave away the shirts, but kept the pants to wear around the house. After all, they’re really comfortable…
Then one day the author went out to check the mail wearing one of those pairs of pants. A neighbor who lives near the mailboxes was watering her garden, and she asked the author if they were in college studying to be a nurse, like her daughter. When she received a negative answer, the neighbor suddenly lost her mind.
The woman scolded the OP for the fact that they have no right to wear the scrubs since they’re not a nurse, and that it looks like ‘stolen valor.’ That is, people study for years in college to earn this honorable right – and the author is pretending to be someone they are not.
The original poster was actually baffled by this wrathful speech – simply because they didn’t intend to pretend to be a nurse. But the neighbor did not calm down, and literally that evening also wrote an angry post on Facebook about this incident.
It’s good, the OP recalls, that the woman didn’t go into personal details when describing the situation – after all, the commenters, and among them were many neighbors in the area, fully supported her. And so the author, in turn, decided to enlist the support of the folks online.

On the other hand, scrubs have long been perceived as something inherent only to medical workers. “It’s all about convenience and practicality,” says Iryna Stasiuk, an expert in syndromic therapy from Odessa, Ukraine, whom Bored Panda asked for a comment on this case. “Moreover, in clinics, scrubs are often worn not only by nurses, but also by workers not directly related to medicine. For example, administrators or technical staff.”
Of course, Iryna agrees that in order to become a doctor or a nurse, you need to put in a lot of time, effort and money. But at the same time, scrubs are not a distinguishing feature of a doctor, like shoulder straps or a cap are for a policeman or a soldier.
“I have seen people wearing scrubs at home or in other everyday situations more than once – and no one accused them of stealing valor. It seems to me that this neighbor simply blew a scandal out of literally nothing,” Iryna summarizes.
People in the comments to the original post are also pretty sure that the author did nothing wrong and didn’t violate any points of some “unspoken code of honor for nurses.” “I’m a nurse and was a surgical technologist before that. There are so many professions that wear scrubs, not just nurses, so she’s making a fuss for no reason,” one of the responders reasonably wrote.
Moreover, the commenters ridiculed the phrase ‘stealing valor,’ used by the hapless neighbor. “By her definition of ‘stolen valor,’ everyone who has ever worn camo is guilty of impersonating a soldier,” another person added wittily. And what do you, our dear readers, think about this story? Please feel free to share your comments below the post.
People in the comments, however, unanimously sided with the author, stating that the neighbor wasn’t right at all

Neighbor is mad. She thought she had free medical advice living next door. She was all ready to go into detail about her piles when OP cut her off. How DARE OP!?!?
Free medical advice and a tutor for her daughter.
Load More Replies...Her neighbor is certifiably insane. In no way is this “stolen Valor”. She has no idea what that actually means. I’m guessing she the neighborhood busybody trying to dictate how people dress and live their lives and nobody likes her.
I don't know about insane, but she obviously doesn't have enough of her own business to take care of since she's worried about other people's.
Load More Replies...Wear scrubs, if you like them. Vet techs wear scrubs, as do many non-nurse medical personnel. I am currently on the bus back from bloodork respiratory physiotherapy and my therapist was wearing scrubs, as was the person to took my blood, just to mention two. As long as you aren't pretending to be a nurse, there's nothing wrong with wearing comfy clothes.
I have scrubs (only the pants) because I’ve been in substance rehab several times and they just handed them out.
Load More Replies...I wounder what op's neighbor would say if she saw me wearing running shoes when I am using my wheelchair🤔
When I worked in a hospital, I asked a doctor to nick some scrubs for me. This was about 15 years ago and I still have them. Comfortable and they endure.
I own 3 pairs of scrub pants that I wear a great deal of the time, because they are comfortable. And also convenient - they have LOTS of pockets. I often wear them when I go out to check my mail. If ANYONE told me I didn't have the right to wear them, just wait and see what I'd put on to go outside my house. BTW, I was a history major in college. And I'm 83 years old.
Back in the day, nurses wore starched white uniforms and caps. Each nursing college had its own unique hat, so those in the know knew where that nurse was trained. Shoes had to be white, and if the nurse wore a dress uniform, her hose had to also be white.
The army gave me a white uniform when I finished training in being a lab tech. Women got the pant set and the dress. I guess no one would wear them since you could wear ur regular uniform(camo with boots). I rocked that dress, tights and Oxford shoes.
Load More Replies...Not a nurse, but wear scrubs for work in a clean room. Scrubs have big deep POCKETS! I wear black scrub pants all the time. Most people don't recognize them as scrub pants. I have considered wearing scrub tops outside of work days, they are so comfortable and have a ton of pockets, but I like Hawaiian style tops and bold patterns, so just the black scrub pants that go with all my shirts.
You want bold patterns, scrubs got your back. Just Google "scrubs with patterns."
Load More Replies...I work at a hospital. Our employee appearance policy states that all employees can wear scrubs if they want to, and it specifically states that admin employees can also wear scrubs. I wear scrub pants when I'm with my horses. Scrub pants are the perfect barn pants - inexpensive, quick drying, comfortable, breathable, and have lots of pockets.
For Heaven's sake, they sell scrubs at Walmart - anyone and their brother can buy them! They ARE comfortable, and I'm surprised that more people haven't decided they're great around-the-house wear. Your neighbor is a loon for thinking that only 'medical professionals' are allowed to wear 'the costume'. Screw her.
What even is this post? First--many professions, outside of medical, wear scrubs. Second, you'd be surprised how many people wear scrubs daily as just clothes. I have several pairs of scrub pants. I have some I can dress up because they look like slacks. I have some baggy, flared ones that look great with sandals--gives that beachy linen pant look. I have a bunch that are cargo pant scrubs and I wear them daily with tees and converse. In fact, the reviews on scrubs over at Amazon are full of people stating they don't work in medical, they just like the pants to wear as every day pants. I'm sure other medical people probably recognize my pants, but most people would have no clue. And I've been asked, "Where did you get those pants? Those are cute." Most medical people I know where scrub pants out and about as clothes. I'm having a had time imagining anyone giving a c**p that someone is walking around in scrubs.
I was in the hospital for a few days, and they gave me scrubs to wear as pajamas. I snuck them out afterward because they're comfortable as hell.
I doubt that the hospital would have reused them. But you're right, they ARE comfortable as hell. I had to wear a pair of scrub pants home from my medical appointment, when my stomach dismissed its contents, and my bowels decided to follow suit.
Load More Replies...I wear scrubs at my job and I'm not a nurse. It is a requirement. The difference is we can't take the scrubs home, they are supplied by the hospital and at the end of the shift they go into laundry bags. In saying that though, we do have other people that wear their own scrubs to and from work that also aren't nurses. Whilst they can be comfy, they aren't very breathable and you can get quite warm wearing them. They would make good winter pyjamas.
This is seriously stupid. She should have told the neighbor to eat a bag of d**ks and walked away.
Obviously NTA. However, OP did have an interesting point about employers sometimes being shady in how they want employees to dress. Once a man in a hi-vis safety vest came up to my house and said he was with the cable company. I don't have cable, but I figured he must need access to my yard to fix my neighbor's cable or whatever, so I asked how I could help. He starts asking all these questions about my internet. Eventually I realize he's just a cable salesman. They dressed all their sales people in safety vests so people would be more willing to talk to them. Ooh, I was pissed!
Lol, l wear scrubs for the spring cleaning because l don't want to ruin any of my clothes. Sue me
Whew is that lady gonna be mad when she learns of other jobs/professions wearing scrubs! As a pharmacist, certain chains and independent pharmacies require scrubs. I was required to purchase some for an experiential rotation pre-licensure. Definitely NTA. That lady needs to get a grip, she's mad over pants.
What I hear is I need to start stealing my moms scrubs. This post is ridiculous they're literally sold in target for 24.99 they're effing pants.
The neighbor is a Karen. “Stolen valor?!” No. Anyone can wear scrubs without being a medical professional or an impostor of such. Some people wear them just because yes…they’re comfortable. Also, in the large hospital system near my house, EVERYONE who works there wears scrubs, not just the doctors (when doing surgery) and nurses. So, housekeeping staff, clerical staff, etc. all wear them too. Each department has its own color of scrubs to wear, and the hospital has charts posted throughout the buildings that indicate which department wears each color. Problem solved.
I remember when I was in high school, for some reason scrubs became one of those "90 day fads" that teens go through occasionally. For awhile there it seemed like half the student body was wearing them. Our school hallways looked like a doctor's convention was in town.
You can wear what you want when you want. I wear caftans because normal seams in clothing make me sore. Wearing a caftan does not make me Mrs. Roper. (google it I am older than dirt). Put a hard hat on and go out. Put ballet slippers on. I would be wearing all sort of s**t just to bug neighbor.
A long time ago only surgeons wore scrubs. Scrubs are worn to keep your street clothes from getting stained in a messy job...like surgery.
NTA. Can u plzzzz tell her to go f**k herself on my behalf. Actually u shud put this as a comment in her fb post. Its none of her bloody business and also she doesn’t lose anything by ur attire. If she feels her daughter is great then tell her to pray to her. That doesn’t give her the right belittle someone else
I'm blown away from the actual post reason, due to the employers telling them to 'grab' (buy) a couple of 'uniforms' - or, specific clothes for their job. Any time I've had a job & the employer wanted any kind of uniform, the employers purchased them and handed them out, which we returned when we left the job. I just can't get over employers that expect their workers to pay for them!!! Insanity! Is this a common issue, or does it depend on where you live? Shocked rant over, and NTA, re: OP.
yeah it's pretty common in the States, at least in the red ones like Texas.

We have a thrift store where the workers are required to wear scrubs. I worked for them back in the early 80s and I'm not sure what the reasoning was but it may be so you could tell the workers from the customers. We have housekeepers at the retreat center where I work now who wear them and they find them comfortable and since most of them have large pockets so keys and tools are handy. Scrubs are not just for medical people. Get over it.
What a nutjob. My daughter wears scrubs and she works at an opticians office doing all the paperwork and adjusting people frames.
Tons of other professions use scrubs: PT/OT, pharmacy techs, dental offices, home health aides, nursing home employees, veterinarian techs, laboratory techs, phlebotomists, medical examiner, med.sales, prison inmates, salon techs (beauty & nail), hospice workers,,daycare, food service, and so many more! (This is just what I can think of).
