The more technology and communication progress, the more scams are thriving. It has become easier for scammers to reach potential victims and carry out their schemes. From phishing emails to fake online stores, there are countless ways that scammers can take advantage of people who are not cautious.

However, while it is always important to be wary of scams, it is also important to not jump to conclusions and assume that everything that seems too good to be true is a scam. It is important to do research and be cautious in order to avoid scams and find legitimate opportunities that you wouldn't want to miss out on. Lots of people these days assume that everything online is basically a scam, which is why this Redditor wanted to know: "What do people think is a scam but they just don't understand?" and people gave some great answers on this topic that might give you some really important insights.

Socialized Healthcare, apparently. "but I'm not sick and I don't wann apay for other people and never use it" blah blah blah. You could fall flat on your face and second and need 500 bucks worth of stitches and painkillers. You can get run over at no fault of your own. You can have a fricking aneurysm. Getting regular checkups is even gonna bring your premiums down, the insurance would rather pay 50-100 for a yearly dental checkup than 15k in prosthetics because all your teeth rotted out because you didn't see anyone in 10 years. Why is the concept of socialism so scary to some Americans? What's so bad about it? Being able to rely on the community? If I get sick, I don't bankrupt myself. If I lose my job, I won't lose my home and can still live a frugal, but dignified life. I would rather live a life with a lot of security and all the same options than a life with 0 security but "mah freedomz". Medical debt bankruptcy is not freedom.

And we'd honestly love for the sh*tshow to stop. My sister has two autoimmune disorders and hasn't had insurance for years. She had the chance to get it this year but the premiums were so high it wasn't worth it. I'd love to have national healthcare!

The people who want it to keep it as it is focus on “YOUR TAXES WILL RISE” without telling you that you would pay less overall. Even with the NHS being decimated by the Tories, it’s better than paying hundreds of pounds a month for insurance then having to pay thousands before anyone will see you because profits.

So, I live in a universal health country (Spain). Here, people is paying taxes for public health for decades. And I never (never in my life) heard someone saying "I'm paying for other people's sickness". All we are covered from birth to death, and we are afraid of sickness, of course, but not by its financial side. The same for public universities.

I live in the US and I simply do not understand why conservatives are so against universal healthcare. Well, I do understand—it’s about profit, but….this is healthcare, and it’s not something anyone should have to pay for or go into poverty for. It’s maddening.

You can't just blame conservatives. Democrats have had full control of the house, senate and presidency for the last 2 years but not a peep about universal Healthcare. This would have been the time to do it. My guess is a lot of health insurance lobbyists have been lining a lot of pockets.

Medicare is no bargain. You must supplement it with an expensive private plan and it has a MUCH higher rate of rejection of claims than do private insurance companies.

If you listen to old-time radio shows e.g. 1940s, 1950s ( there's lots of websites for them), they often include PSAs about helping the community so the community can help you. Give a hand up to the little guy, even help less fortunate people in other countries. Would sound like 'socialism' (eek!) to a lot of Americans today. What happened to those sentiments?

Greed, it's the foundation of our laws. All for me and none for you, and those at the top will do anything, including trying to overthrow an election to ensure you will always have nothing. Want a solid example? In the US, the police are only responsible for protecting assets, not citizens.

Healthcare should NOT be a for-profit business. US lawmakers don't address medical debt because it's not something they personally will ever have to worry about. What happened to people becoming medical professionals in order to help others? Now they do it for the money. It doesn't matter if Bob Smith gets cancer and loses everything, as long as Dr Jones can buy his 7th Porsche. This country makes me sick and I can't wait to leave after I retire.

Prof. Robert Kerton, Former President of the American Council on Consumer Interests, gave us some important tips for noticing scams: "The most brilliant warning light flashes when the unexpected phone or online contact explains why you must not contact anyone about the issue. You are about to be scammed. That warning light 'Do not contact anyone' means you are at serious risk. Don’t hang around, hang up.

Often the caller has a tried-and-true way to frighten you into submission. A different strategy is a promise to get rich quick. Don’t ask questions: disconnect. Your questions are predictable. Scammers have effective tactics - based on their experience - designed to get you to provide cash, or access to your bank account. If you are habitually polite, say 'No thank you' and hang up."

Having qualifications doesn't always equal smart. It can just mean having a good memory. Some people are great at remembering facts and spitting them out in an examination setting only, not really getting the greater significance of what they remember. Certainly not applying them to real life.

The richest claim the most “tax breaks” & income adjustments and appear to have less income and therefore pay less taxes, like say, $750. While claiming to be a billionaire. As for making more jobs, they tend to make more low paying jobs. Jobs with no benefits because they only hire part time employees. Let’s not forget driving companies out of business because they utilize their services then declare bankruptcy so they don’t have to pay bills or taxes.

I disagree that therapy is beneficial for everyone. For myself and other socially anxious people. The thought of talking to a stranger at all never mind about very personal subjects fills me with dread. I also tend to show demand characteristics when in such situations, that is I say whatever the I think the person wants me to say (regular GP appointments are a disaster for the same reason). I have tried it and never went back after two sessions as it made my anxiety worse to the point of getting no sleep due to running over the session 100 times in my mind and berating myself for talking pish.

They also gave some advice for not falling for scams: "THINK. BEFORE. DOING. It's the most effective way to not fall for scams or even receive scams in the first place. Mainly consider: 1) is there anything suspicious about the 'scam'? (ex. any private information you need to enter, do you have to do something on an external medium like a website or download, etc.) 2) Where does the "scam" come from? (Do you know the issuer, is the issuer's account/contact information legit, how long has it been active, etc.) 3) Is the motive of the bait itself suspicious in any way (too good to be true, simply unnecessary or excessive, etc.).

To prevent potential scams or any harmful threats towards you, simply don't give away any contact information, whether on the internet or literally publicly. Sure, you may be contacted randomly by scammers at any point, but this would prevent any scam directly directed to you."

I've worked for several unionized companies. The pay is great but the attitude is poor. "What are you up to today?" "Oh, as little as possible." I don't think I ever pass a road crew where even half of the people are actually working, the rest standing around.

I'm a union carpenter and my working dues are $1 per hour and sitting dues are $30 a month. If I were a non union carpenter I'd be lucky I'd I was only making $10 per hour less than I do now. I have great benefits, get discounts at a lot of places, retirement and more... everyone should unionize

The uninformed are everywhere sadly. Think about it - average IQ is 90 to 110 and that's not smart (I know its not a great measure). Too many people were sold a load of lies and wanted to believe things would be better. They are, of course, still waiting. Some are still sure it was the right thing to do even though it isn't better. Can't help some people.

What’s frustrating is that we had the best deal in the EU compared to the other countries with our rebates and opt outs. All gone and we are much poorer for it. Brexit was pushed by people like Reece-Mogg as he would have had to start paying taxes. What was laughable was Farage moaning about how the eu was treating the uk fishing industry. He was our f*****g rep on the fisheries commission. He never bothered showing up to the meetings.

Really? We were one of the top 3 countries paying money in to the EU but one of the bottom countries getting benefits back. Many of UK industries had massive restrictions placed on them because they "threatened" other EU countries, including stopping us exporting Cornish Pasties and blue cheese. Plus Germany wanted to move a lot of the UK banking to Germany. And while we got fined for breaking small EU laws France and Italy could flaunt big ones daily and were allowed to get away with it. The EU was only good for the UK if you were rich and travelled.

Well.. The funny thing is the opposite was indeed a scam: the Uk being part of the EU was kind of a con for all the other members. The country was pretty much a parasite, benefiting a lot from the open market but with dozens of singular exemptions and far less restraints. Not saying that the EU is better off after the brexit, but it is definitely saner without a member undermining it from the inside while playing the victim.

Generally speaking the majority of the Brexiteers were over 60 and right wing. Not many young people turned out to vote believing wrongly that it was something that didn't effect them. Everyone I knew was shocked when the vote came back as leave but they didn't turn out to vote. Now they're complaining their pals having to leave to go back to EU, the price of food is sky high and you can't travel freely to mainland Europe. Mind you all the leave voters aren't happy either because they stupidly thought the navy would start machine gunning refugees in the English Channel or some such. Because of course all the UK's problems come from a handful of poor displaced people risking their life in a boat.

My estimation is that a lot of Brits voted 'exit' as a 'protest vote' against 'those bloody bureaucrats in Brussels', and relied on everyone else to vote 'remain'. Then they could say 'well, don't blame me, i voted to leave'. Unfortunately, too many of them had the same idea.

This one is undoubtedly an error from the OP who doesn’t understand how personal finance work for a lot of low wage workers. Taxes are not the only parameter. A pay rise might induce the loss of social supports, or the change of category for some benefits. Earning 10% more but losing your housing arrangement (rent control, public subsidies) for example may not be worth it.

While that might be a consideration, the people who put forward this reasoning tend not to be minimum wage, social support users. The ones making this argument are the ones just below a change in tax bracket. The "theory" goes - I'm paying 20% now, if I get a pay rise I'll be paying 40% - completely failing to understand that it's not 40% of the new salary, but 40% of the above the threshold.

I don't know about every country, however i known this can happen. If that pay rise will change your tax bracket for example. Or it can be a situation of you lose some benefits because you will be paid 1 euro/dollar more than the max allowed for that benefit.

Most countries I've lived in it's bracketed. So for example you might pay 15% on the first $35k, then if you earn over that you will pay 20% on the rest. So if you went from $34k to $38k you would only pay the extra tax on $3k. (disclaimer - I have pulled those figures out of my a**e because every country had different tax rates and thresholds). It might affect benefits though.

My most recent increase in pay resulted in my no longer qualifying for a range of benefits which meant that I’m a little worse off than I was before. I dont earn less because of tax but because of my new pre tax income I no longer qualify for discounted energy, car registration and medication etc, the additional costs outweigh my pay increase. That said, I don’t think this will be my last pay increase so I deal short term pain for long term gain.

Its not about taxes. If you are low wage and on some safety nets, there are overlapping rules for what you qualify for based on income. I.e. foodstamps has an upper limit. If you're close to the limit, a small raise can take away foodstamp coverage BUT not be enough to make up the difference. So, pay goes up but you have less money. My family has been through this, so yea it happens.

On the other hand they constantly bicker about the bank closing down another branch office instead of switching provider. At least, as I have been actively moderating on Discord for the past 1.5 years, I'll list off a couple examples of more subtle scams there, put as many as you wish in the article:

    - Discord Nitro scam: someone from your friend list DMs you a gifted subscription to Discord Nitro, the link leading to a fake site that steals your login info once input and then uses your account to scam other people on your own friend list.

    - Playtesting scam: Someone sends you a file or a link to a file, asking you politely to playtest the supposed game that, when run, hijacks your account, steals your information and uses all to further scam others.

    - Steam report scam: by far the most popular scam lately, works by someone DMing you a fake screenshot of your account apparently scamming them, then telling you that they mass reported your account on Steam, if you believe them and continue talking the scammer leads you to another account of a supposed Steam moderator who sends you a link that gives them access to all your data if clicked.

    - Cryptocurrency scam: widely popular on the internet and exists on Discord as well. Some account DMs you that you won some cryptocurrency and leads you to some external website or Discord server with an external verification process that hijacks your account and information."

Who doesn't take our holiday insurance? Like who leaves their own country to a foreign one without the guarantee that should anything happen (from lost luggage to broken leg to death) the costs are all covered? I went on a cruise in the summer and bad weather meant we couldn't dock in one port so it turned into a sea day (no big deal) and insurance meant we all got £150 compensation in my party for the trouble. You see so many people every year posting go fund me's because they or a loved one are stuck in a foreign country (or their body is) with an injury and a massive hospital bill and no way of getting home. All when they could have paid like £10 (so long as they have no medical issues but if they do then all the more reason to get insurance!!) for insurance and peace of mind. This one actually depends, honestly. If you already have a credit card, check your terms and conditions. Most credit cards actually provide travel insurance so in this case it would be a scam. Same for rental car insurance. If you already have car insurance, chances are it covers your rentals as well.

I usually buy it even flying locally, it's usually fairly cheap, forgot one time when my sister and I were visiting family on a sudden illness and kind of was distracted. Of course flying back the connection was cancelled and no other options do to weather (high wind and dust due to construction at connecting airport or something), was pretty upset. Lucky I thought to check my credit card since it was a airline points one. And the concierge service on it had some kind of auto travel insurance. Got compensated for our food, and hotel and made the next day just fine. $300.00 or so. Not sure if actual insurance would have compensated for lost time too, but what we got was pretty good considering no other options and airlines don't help like they used to. So just a reminder to also check with your CC company you used to pay

I work in the Property and Casualty Insurance industry, never considered Travel Insurance a scam. There are so many random variables in life that can happen and really mess your trip up. A major accident, tour operator goes belly up, lost luggage (had that happen to us once, didn't buy the insurance as it was a quick two hour flight for a relatives funeral and the luggage was back at our house the next day, if this was a week or two across the country or different country, yeah, I would have purchased the insurance). And its not that expensive, particularly if you know what coverage your credit card offers automatically, so you can make informed decisions on what coverage you need. On top of that, I also register with the State Department when travelling out of the country, that way if stuff hits the fan all of sudden they can inform me the nearest consulate I can evacuate from.

It should not cost $1000 with a result of oh he has a tummy ache here is 14 omeprazole for another $20. (Based on a true story) Edit: The number of animals being dumped in my area has gone up a lot since inflation and veterinary care prices went up.

I have to admit, growing up in the 60s and 70s we had a much different attitude to pets. Yes, you would get them their shots and take care of them. However, if they were going to require care that would break the bank you would find other ways to take care of them. We didn't have "fur babies" or use them as a replacement for actual children. Not saying it was better or worse, just different ways of looking at animals.

Listen, the majority of people in the US actually WANT this, but there’s a small and very loud red minority who cheat their way into political office, jump right into the back pocket of corporations—-including the monster that is private healthcare—-and always vote down, or at least water down, any legislation for a national health system. Obamacare was supposed to have that option, but republicans wouldn’t vote for it until that option was removed and the rest watered down to a shadow of its original, intended form. F*****g frustrating for the majority.

What makes that whole US - universal healthcare thing such a travesty is that they have literally the perfect economy to do it. They wouldn't even have to raise taxes... just take it out of their Military budget (they wouldn't feel a thing) and EVERYONE in the US, including Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, US Minor Outlying Islands, Guam, American Samoa and Northern Mariana Islands would have free healthcare. Especially the veterans!

I'm sorry...I AM for single payer but, it ain't free. I would be willing to take the 40% tax bite to get it. In the US, we do NOT trust government because we see corporations take advantage of us. Ironically, government has more restrictions on it's reach than corporate has.

You see in my other comment the way most flerfers think earth looks like. The really large distances here are between south america, south africa and australia. Most of the flights between this areas will land on the northern hemisphere, as their isn't much travel between these areas directly. Flerfers see this as proof of flat earth. Also you can see that you get nowhere near the edges. The sun is only a few km from the earths surface, and goes in circles above the equatorial line. Seasonal circles are usually completely misunderstood by the flerfers. There are dozens of videos of them failing at understanding seasons. I conclude that there aren't people stupid enough to believe in flat earth that are capable of understanding how seasons are supposed to work. If they would have a grasp at understanding fundamental physics, they wouldn't be flerfers in the first place. If you have further questions ask away, I love talking about those dimwits :D

From an actual discussion: "So the Earth is flat?" "YES!" "So what shape is it?" "It's flat" "Yes, but what SHAPE is it? Is it square? A rectangle? Hexagon? Disc?" "Er, it's a disc!" "So what's on the other side of the disc?" "What?" "So what's on the other side of the disc?" "Er . . ." A lot of people expected us to just fix things for free. Others would take it as an insult when we would quote prices or ask to be paid for a job. Send a bill and some people would ask why or what is this. Ask us why we were ripping them off even though the bill was itemized and the price was discussed before hand. It was a horrible industry to work in because of they way people are.

I'd include anyone doing craft or artwork on the side. My sister has a small business creating art glass that she sells on Etsy and through a couple of local gift shops. She also works part time elsewhere. She takes commissions, but very regularly gets people complaining that she should be giving them a discount or making it for free because its a hobby and she enjoys doing it. Asking people to pay for her time, skill, the use of materials, the cost of firing a kiln etc is perfectly reasonable, but customers seem to think its a rip off (and what she makes isn't expensive, we're talking £5 for a coaster, £5 for lampwork glass beads, £15 for a tealight screen, but they think she should gift it to them)

THIS! I run estate sales for a living and was a dealer/reseller of vintage and antiques for years. I know a lot about all sorts of old stuff. People always want my help with garage sales and pricing etc. Now, I don't mind if a friend buys some cool old thing and asks me what it is or if it's valuable, but when people just expect me to do what I do for free for a whole day or send me a list of stuff, it pisses me off. It took me years to gain all this knowledge and how to find information quickly and I make anywhere from $25-85 an hour for my expertise depending on various factors. Like I don't expect my mechanic friend to fix my car for free but am comfortable asking him a question or two to diagnose an issue or asking advice. I don't mind helping for free to an extent but not if it becomes real work.

If you paid once for something, you don't want to pay again for it. The next big problem is, that repairing often costs the same as if you buy it new and won't last as long as a new item. If you don't reapir expensive stuff like a bicycle or a car people don't understand the prices or are just too poor to buy the new thing.

The supplemental census forms asks for a lot of personal financial information. The purpose of the census is to count people for congressional apportionment not to collect info on my financial or personal life. It does a lot more than just determine congressional apportionment and the financial information they request is broad. It also helps determine how many people in your area are living below the poverty line, at the poverty line, above it, etc., which affects programs that are offered in your neighborhood. The data is not identifiable on an individual bases and is used for many, many things you depend on but don't realize they are based on census data. This information is used to determine a lot of Yes, you are part of the aluminum hat crowd.

Unless it's a n95 or equivalent, your mask is minimally effective for preventing you from getting it, other viruses its more effective. If you mean about preventing you from spreading, Medical masks are about 70% effective, and cloth, depending on the materials, it between 5% and 80%. So when it comes to masks, it depends what masks and what your goal is.

Pet insurance. Everyone freaks out because you have to pay for the services up front and then the insurance pays you back. Everyone I've talked to won't get it because "they won't pay me back!" Or "If I have to pay up front anyway, what's the point?" Look, when Fido gets cancer and needs chemo...you're going to be thrilled you will be getting that $6k back (or whatever it is). We have a Boxer, and they are known for cancer. My first one actually did die of cancer. So, every year we have to pay for a physical and cancer screening. It's pricy, about $600 bucks. However, I get that money back every single time. Plus I have the reassurance that, if she gets sick, I'm covered. I highly recommend pet insurance.

I'm probably going to get all sorts of hate for this, but if you are the sort of person who wouldn't put your animal through lengthy, painful and invasive treatments then paying pet insurance is paying for all the people that will. There are people who will spend tens of thousands of pounds having joint replacements all round on a horribly inbred dog that will be in pain for the rest of its life rather than admit that it has terribly poor quality of life. If this commenter is getting back more than their premiums *every year* then all the other premium payers are literally paying their bills. Put the equivalent money to the premiums aside in a savings account for when you need it, and don't buy an animal that is overbred to the point where its health will suffer. If boxers are so genetically messed up as to routinely get cancer, then why the heck are you supporting their breeding?

$600/year = $50/month... what's your phone bill cost? What's your internet bill? How much do you spend on pet food/month? What's your house/condo/apartment insurance cost?? It's really not that pricey when you want a pet, take a look at the general health issues they -could- experience and do the math.

Bought By Many/Many Pets... you pay a higher price to start but the premiums NEVER go up. Five years ago £30 a month was a lot, today it is not (comparing prices to other insurers). I have two dogs and my oldest was insured with another company, before I had heard of Many Pets and his premiums are painful, especially now he is classified as a senior dog.

The point of pet medical insurance for most people is the same as human medical insurance, so they don't have to pay large costs upfront. It doesn't really matter if it's some sort of refund situation when you don't have the money upfront to pay it to begin with. Rebates are cool but benefit the already wealthy.

The actual scam is the price of any medical situation in the US for animals or humans which makes insurance a necessity unless you're wealthy because the costs are often arbitrarily decided upon.

It would, but since each county sets it's sales tax customers get upset the "national price" for large companies are different depending on location. Giving one "retail price" then adding the tax later gives the illusion of lower prices to consumers.

There are over 10,000 taxing jurisdictions in the US. On a single transaction you may pay state, county, and city sales tax. Los Angeles for example 6% state, 3.5% County and special district. Travel 30 miles to the east to Orange County it is 6% state, 1.75% County for 7.75%. The merchant collects and remits this money to the various taxing agencies. Once a government starts getting money the only thing they want from you is more money.

sales tax drives me mad. I run estate sales(as I have mentioned) and we collect sales tax. People argue it all the time, saying "but we don't have to pay sales tax at a garage sale!" or that they should have to pay it b/c the items were taxed when the original owner bought them. I have to explain that we are a real business, registered with the state, so when we sell anything, we have to collect it and pay it every 30 days to the state. Professionally run estate sales are not the same as running your own garage sale.

Download speed depends on more than the actual speed at the router, which is what is advertised. I get about a third of that speed if I use my laptop wireless a room or two away from the router. My laptop WiFi circuitry is over ten years old and may not be able to receive or transmit at the same speed as the router. The only time I get the advertised speed is when I am connected to the router by an ethernet cable directly. And nothing else in the house is also using the WiFi.

Quite a bit of insurance, actually. I work for a legitimate online retailer and we go out of our way to make all customer issues right. Yet, on the rare occurrence a customer disputes a purchase from us with the card issuer, even if we have evidence against their dispute or that we resolved it the customer wins the charge back around 75% of the time.

It's only kind of free. That money comes from increased rates on either other card holders or the vendors. Which is why we used to get cash discounts in some places. Now they are all the same cost, no cash discount so it's the better for you to use a card and pay off. Except of course the higher rates affect probably poorer people who hit a rough patch and get stuck with a balance they can't pay off. ...of course of every one could and did pay off their balance every month the points would either be reduced or just reflect on stores raising prices of product to cover increased fees for processing... Just kind of a loop now, cards cause higher prices, and the only way to get back some of it is to use your card.

Free money how? At best, it's your money, slightly before you get your money to pay off your credit card. And that's if you pay off your full balance before the time period on the contract (some say a month, others are weird and say 20 days) in which case you don't pay any fees or carrying charges. Are you talking about points or rewards here?

Free money - I have a credit card for a department store. We use this for almost all the things we buy almost everything using this card. At the end of the month we way off the balance, and once a quarter we receive gift vouchers to use in the shop. This equates to 'free money to me as the vouchers can be used in a shop we use frequently.

"Points" are one of the biggest scams around! They charge the merchants up to 4% for use of the card and give out points worth at most 1%. It's in the CC company contract that the price can't be more when paying with the CC instaed of a cheaper method like cash or debit.

In the UK, student loans. Most know they are incredibly favourable, but I still see some talking about how bad they are. There is a minimum wage bracket to pay them back, you are only charged a percentage of the amount over the bracket you earn. For example if it were 10%, and bracket was £200, and you earn £220, you only pay £2. And the entire loan gets written off after 30 years. Yes some people pay £300+ a month, but that's when they are earning over £100,000 a year. If their earnings stop or go down, so do the payments.

Mmm, I'm on the fence about this one, it depends on which plan you're on. Yes the repayments are low but the interest can be relatively high (the interest rate on my brothers student loan is more than twice the interest rate on my mortgage) but given that most people have no other choice if they want to go to university (and most universities charge the highest rate fees) its a bit of a monopoly. I'm almost 40 and it's only recently that the balance on my loan has started to go down even though I've been paying back for almost 15 years because the interest has been more than the payments. Also there are a number of different plans with different rules depending on when you graduated, mine will be written off when I get to 65, 44 years after I graduated, not 30.

I started Uni the very first year student loans were instituted in the UK. My brother, a year ahead of me went to Uni for free as we were poor enough to qualify for assistance and smart enough to be awarded it. He graduated owing nothing and I graduated with a £30k debt. Due to rent and cost of living plus a decade long wage freeze in my sector I still haven't paid it back. Meanwhile bro is onto his 3rd house and debt free. Mine won't be written off until I'm 65 whereas people who graduated 10 years after me will have their debt forgiven aged 40.

In the UK they promised 5G would give you better signal and faster downloads. In reality it provided neither. Download speeds are just as dependent on the connection to the file owner as they are to your phone and 5G has a much weaker signal meaning without many more masts there was poorer signal.

5G is no more harmful than 4G. Some context: I work in IT, and one of the technologies my company is promoting is 5G and edge computing. I work with subject matter experts (SMEs), and have written articles about 5G and edge computing. In a nutshell, 5G--without the infrastructure to support it--is only 4G. Very few places have the infrastructure. When you see 5G LTE, you're really just getting 4G.

Depends on what kind of scam you mean. If you mean it gives you cancer, well not much more than 4G would. But the speed claims are mostly bogus. There are different bands of what can legally be called 5G. The lower ones are no faster (and sometimes slower) than your existing 4G. But the high speed terahertz band is what gives the amazing claimed gigabit speeds, but that is almost non-existent. And the signal is so weak, and poor at penetrating your walls, that they'll need a cell antenna on every light pole. So don't get too worked up about getting those super fast speeds, especially in your car.,

I can only speak for electric guitars, but we live in the golden age of affordable gear. Cheap instruments were often nearly unplayable a few decades ago, but nowadays you can buy a decent instrument for 200 euro or even less. That being said, the factory setup of cheap instruments often is hit or miss. You can often improve your beginners instrument greatly if you not only learn your first chords, but also learn the basics of setup: intonation, action, lubricating the points of friction with pencil graphite, restringing in a way that improves tuning stability,...

But setting one up is a great skill to have. There are some great cheap guitars these days that really do punch above their weight.

Idk, I played the flute and then the piccolo all through school (@8 years)and my Gemeinhardt flute and piccolo were fine for parades, concerts, solos, performances at Disney World, etc. I was a middling musician who knew I wasn't going to play except recreationally once I graduated high school. Taking care of it and having it serviced kept it playing at the level I needed. Maybe I'm naive but there wasn't a need to upgrade.

Yes, I know all the arguments and am not anti but it is naive to act like the waste isn't an issue. It is the longevity of the waste and the amount of water required to deal with it. I know a load of people will deny it is much but with radioactive material you don't need much to be harmful and burying it in the planet is not a good answer. Better than fossil fuel doesn't mean it is problem free.

Nuclear waste management is a carefully planned thing. It's not just buried. Think of it like a very long tunnel. New waste goes in one end and slowly fills the tunnel. By the time gets pushed to the other end it comes out as non nuclear metal that can be used. It is a very long term plan, but works.

Believe it or not, you can actually blame much of this on the Simpsons. Too many people get their 'information' for tv shows (just like how juries often have trouble because too many people think CSI is real). Because Homer works in a Nuclear power plant, and the plant is shown to be a horrifying disaster run by incompetents, that is what people think of.

If all you want is to hold a copy of a professionally bound book with your name on to look good on a shelf or give as gifts, knock yourself out. But that's all it is. Vanity publishing has zero to do with being a writer. No one who is legit will ever ask for money - there are tons of sharks who charge money for feedback but no publisher or agent will ever charge. You can also self-publish (you may choose to spend money on things like cover art and marketing, but the actual process of self publishing is free). I earn a

I earn a living as a writer and have never spent a penny, except for purchasing a laptop and money travelling to meet agents and publishers (plus obviously the cost of my time). It's a very very demanding industry and the brutal reality is that most people who want to be writers are either just not talented enough, or lack the necessary work ethic and discipline. Obviously there are serious barriers to that mean very talented and hard working writers from minority or working class backgrounds don't get a look in. We need to fix that. But vanity publishing is nothing to do with that. Also I don't get the comparison to music, it obviously costs money to create a demo. Writing a novel is free except for the need to purchase a computer.

How many times in this industry have people sent in their work to get "worth-while feedback" only to hear that their work is rubbish that no one would publish, only to have that same work go on to become best sellers? I'll get you started: The Jungle Book. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Life of Pi. Twilight. Frankenstein.... feel free to add more.

    Christof Irran

What makes the eventual best seller "... rubbish that no one would publish" upon first submission is not the story line but the condition the manuscript is in. It hasn't been worked on enough; it needed several more cycles of editing, re-writing, shortening. Stephen King wrote a book about writing. In it he talks about still getting his manuscripts thrown back at him as rubbish, though he is a very established writer, because the manuscript "hasn't lost enough weight" yet. He writes that with every re-reading the manuscript has to lose at least 30% of its pages. And too many dear-to-his-heart curlicues and favorite phrases are left in that would make the book junk. What self-publishers don't have is the benefit of an excellent editor who rips their book to shreds - to the degree it ought to be.

So, you open a second account, with a debit card of its own, with your bank. You transfer a little money into that account (easy, quick with online banking). Use that for online purchases. Even if your 'details' get stolen and the account is drained you lose, what?, a couple of hundred bucks, tops? They can't get at your main account.

Was doing work outside a Costco. Needed one of their employees to move their car. Went in to get the car moved. Was stopped at the entrance and refused entry because I didn't have a membership card. Explained the situation, told them all we need is that one car moved. They didn't have their phone with me and wouldn't leave or help me. Had the car towed to get the work finished as per contract. Was the manager's car. Freaked on us, then freaked on door person. Costco: Do the right thing.

Wine. I work as a sommelier. Outside of the wine industry, on reddit, and other places.. you constantly hear people talk about the study where the "experts" are fooled by cheap wine, etc. Most of these "studies" are done at universities, with inexpensive wines.. and people who are not really experts. In general, more expensive wines are a lot better.. but are also a lot rarer. There are of course exceptions 'cheap wines' which are fantastic. These are rarer, because as a wine gets a reputation for being good, the demand increases. With the famous/rare wines, there is more competition for them. Chateau Lafite, for example, can only produce so much wine --the buyers at first were only the French (and the British and other Europeans), when the Americans started buying it and there was more demand the price had to climb, when the Chinese started buying it the price could only go up. Lafite cannot just produce more Lafite. So the price for a wine like this has to climb exponentially with the increased demand, and the globalisation of wealth. In particular we have the conspicuous consumption of 'European' goods, Chanel can make more handbags, but Lafite cannot produce more Lafite. Then we have the problem of wine in restaurants being a different price to what you see at the supermarket. Depending on the location, (or in America) the State, you might have very different taxes/laws between bottleshops and restaurants, and the wine may legally need to come from different suppliers. Restaurants tend to not be able to buy in as large of a bulk, etc. Further with a restaurant the extra cost is that the wine is "guaranteed", if it is corked/off.. the restaurant will provide a new bottle. The waiter/somm will be trained (to at least some degree) and know what wines they have and help you pick one that goes with what you are eating. With this you get glass service, decanting, etc. All of this equals a higher cost at a restaurant than a bottleshop. It is not a "scam", but it is a bit like eating a steak at a restaurant and going 'oh, I can buy meat at the butcher for less'.. of course you can!

« I work as a sommelier » but I repeatedly misspelled one of the most famous wines in the world.. 🤨 Chateau Lafitte with 2 t’s or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild with the 2 words.

Pfft. What about the study where they put red food colouring in white wine and the 'experts' acted like it was red wine? I'm not saying wine in general is a scam, but the so-called 'experts' only go by the name and/or price, not by the actual taste of the wine. The taste is determined by the price/name. (Much like Pepsi vs Coke.)

You do realize that the difference between red and white wines are not only the color? Even a modest amateur can recognize it from a single blind sip. Stop perpetuating urban myths such as these “experts” who would be huge idiots.

I'll just say, When I buy wine at a restaurant I kind of know some prices of cheap to medium range and the mark-up might be double, however I also know the markup on Soda is like 100x more so don't feel as bad about the wine.

30 Internet Users Share What A Lot Of People Think Is A Scam When It Really Isn’t In some cases, DLC for games. I play a fair amount of fighting games, and its a bit annoying when people see a game with alot of DLC and immediately assume the game is trying to scam them. When a developer is supporting a game, of course they're gonna want to add more characters to it. Its one of the easiest ways the drum up hype, mix up the gameplay, and bring some more variety to the game. If a game is supported *for awhile*, then of course, its gonna get alot of DLC. This mostly bothers me with BBTAG cause characters are sold in packs of 3 that cost as much as single characters in other games. "Wow, look! this game has half the roster as DLC!" yeah, characters are re-used assets so they were released in bulk after launch. There definitely are fighters that tried to scam people with DLC (Dead or Alive 6, SFxT, MvC:I, Marvel 3. Capcom's pretty bad for this in general) but it bothers me when people associate 'alot of DLC' with 'they're scamming us.'

DLC = downloadable content, e.g. paying more money to get extra characters and levels for the computer game you already bought. Some games companies encourage exta purchases by making the game very difficult to play without them, or sell downloadable content that is rubbish and not worth the money, the poster is saying not all extra content you can buy is a scam and having a lot of extra content available isn't always the sign of a scam.

I miss the time when a computer game was just finished when it got released, and did not add a gazillion DLCs after release just to make more money of the same thing rather than creating new games.

I’m on the fence. Well I DEFINITELY think education is important, in most places school is very on size fits all. If I had got the proper support for my autism and adhd I could have skipped a grade, but instead I just wound up being really bored, all because “someone with autism and adhd can’t be that smart”

Ok, let me clarify a few things for people not in the system in the US. Teachers are constrained by the curriculum set in place by their states and localities. Some things are flexible, some not. There are a LOT of things we would like to include, and quite a few we could exclude. Parents who do not support teachers, and systems who hold teachers 100% accountable for ALL mistakes are what drives qualified teachers out. There are many places where the pay does not equal the amount of education required, and the workload is not justifiable with that same pay. It becomes a scam when it's all about test scores and checking off boxes.

Cheaper to replace, though I did have a protection plan for my old washer dryer when I lived in my old flat. That was super useful as bits kept breaking so they had to come and fix it. It was something like £2.50 per month at the time.

I don't often do it, but did for my induction stove range because it was newer tech for residential. A badly designed control panel above the oven vent meant moisture would go behind the control panel and make it think it was overheating and shut off the top cooking area. I paid for a longer plan too, like 4 years and they had to come out every 6 months to fix the issue. I might have been able to push for a free replacement after a while but it wasn't spelled out. But the plan definitely paid for itself. Would get the plan again but not that stove (stupid Samsung design)
