A year ago, we released a publication on the subreddit r/Scams, showcasing lazy, offensive, and just all-around pathetic attempts to rob people of their money.
Not much has changed since then. Scammers are still targeting innocent folks through phone calls, emails, social media, and even dating apps.
So to remind you to keep your eyes open, we at Bored Panda put together a follow-up article on r/Scams. Below, you will find some of the most popular posts its 329K members have recently made, and all the dirty practices used today. Stay safe!

I keep getting these for a car I traded in back in 2009, but not for any of the cars I’ve owned before or since.
We managed to once again get in touch with a representative of the subreddit's moderator team and their representative agreed to have a little chat with us.
Recently, various independent creators have also been drawing everyone's attention to the world of scamming.
"I am a huge fan of Jim Browning's content, and I am actually subscribed to him on YouTube," the mod told Bored Panda. "I really appreciate his deep-dives into scams. It's also been interesting to see him branch out and collaborate with other YouTubers, like Mark Rober."

If we were to compare these people's work side by side, we would see there are multiple ways you can approach scamming.
"From a popularity standpoint, I think [Jim Browning and Kitboga] both excel in different ways. With Jim Browning, people really love his vigilante style, his ability to showcase what a scammer's device looks like, and sometimes being able to show a scammer being reported or brought to justice," the mod said. "His delivery is more serious than Kitboga's, as he's reporting on facts and information."
According to them, Jim Browning's content also provides that rush that comes from seeing someone get karma handed back to them. "You see the 'bad guy' getting what's coming to them in the end." A great example of Jim's work is his 'Spying on the Scammers' mini-series where he shows just how methodical he can be.

I once got a call from "UK tax" saying I owe whatever amount of money and had to pay immediately or go to jail 🙄 I played along - "oh no, I'm so sorry, yes I'll pay right now. I'm an HMRC agent so could you say the first part of the shared gateway passcode so I can authorise you to access my personal tax account and you can take the payment" - *call ended*

I do this to the east indian guys who call about how much money I owe in tax. They get really really angry.
Major scamming trends depend on a lot of factors. For example, when the pandemic took over the world, we saw a spike in malicious phone calls. But when travel restrictions were lifted and people began going places again, scammers started stealing money from them with too-good-to-be-true vacation packages.
However, in its Consumer Protection Data Spotlight, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said 2021 was a banner year for social media scammers, with $770 million in social-media–originated fraud losses reported to the agency.
Over 95,000 people who reported losing money to social-media–related fraud represent more than 25% of all fraud loss last year, the FTC highlighted. For context, these numbers represent a stunning 18-fold increase over similar type losses reported in 2017.

I had several fraud attempts, the calls came from the banks customer services number so they looked legit. When I spoke to the bank they told me that when they call it's not from their advertised numbers.

For any call and/or email you receive where they ask for your info, don't engage in the conversation. No matter how legit the numer or mail/mailadress looks. Ask the name of the person you spoke with, say you will call them back. HANG UP THE PHONE! Look up the number of your bank (or whatever business you're dealing with) and double check. Google, yellow pages etc, make sure you're actually calling their office. DO NOT call back on the numer they called you with, DO NOT call any numer stated in an email. Check that you have the actual number, call them, say you received a phonecall/email and ask for the person you just talked to. Don't feel bad about it either, actual bank personell will appreciate you verifying (also they won't call you to ask for account numbers etc). And if it did turn out to be a scam not only are you spared the scam, the bank (or whatever company) will now also know scammers are using their name, and they will be able to inform other customers. NEVER EVER give any details or click any link when they approach you first

These guys make my job harder. So many people are paranoid when I call them about a delinquent internet bill. I've just taken to saying "I understand you are concerned about scammers. If you would like to verify what I'm saying please feel free to go to a retail location or call the number listed on our website or your monthly statement" Bosses want me to push for the people to just accept I'm telling the truth, but that's exactly what the scammers are doing, right?

Never give the person calling you any information. Always hang up and call your bank. They will not be angry if it is legitimate.

And don't call back on the number they called you from. Look up your bank phone number in the yellow pages, on google, find it on old credit card statements etc and double check that it's the actual banks phone number (same goes for email, don't click, don't reply, verify that it's actually the bank, check spelling on mail adresses too)

Never answer any of those questions. Ask who you've spoken with/what department, say you're going to hang up and call them back. Hang up the phone, DO NOT CALL BACK on the numer they called you with, find the actual phone number of your bank. Call the bank, ask to speak to the dept/person you had on the line just now. In case of emails DO NOT CALL the number that's in the email. Go to the official bank website or use the phonebook to get the banks number (some scammers are very clever)

"My personal opinion (as one mod out of many on this team) is that people are trusting," the moderator of r/Scams commented on these findings. "I don't think it's gullibility, per se. These scams are tricky sometimes. But, we as people want to defer to the idea that people are honest, and have our best interest at heart. We don't want to necessarily defer to the truth that some people may lie or take advantage of us. That's our nature as humans."
"With social media, you don't necessarily feel like you are in front of (or interacting with) a real person; you can't pick up on body language or tone of voice that may put you on high alert. With social media scams, it's easy to pass along an 'opportunity' to the masses. Especially to a population that is coming off of a global pandemic, and may be desperate for any type of normalcy, money, or opportunity to improve their situation," they explained.

The pulled a bunch of my brothers' info off of Facebook and started telling me they were going to send the pictures to my husband, but each time they would threaten, they would show me a different brother, like they were trying to find my husband, but because I have 12 brothers, they didn't know who to send the horrible pictures to. I had one of these saying I was recorded m*sterbating to p*rn and if I didn't pay $700 to a bitcoin account they would publish pictures of me and the video on Facebook to all my friends and family. Makes me think when I received emails from a scammer stating he had my password and sent me the password, it was a really old password I was using 15 years ago... he though he was so smart, telling me not to call police, he would hack all of my accounts..... so I trace the email back to his Internet Service Provider, sent an email to their abuse service with all the emails he sent me. Never heard from him again.
The mod knows at least one person who was targeted by social media scams, where a company tried to make them purchase their products up-front for a "product tester campaign", and that they would be "refunded" later. So these schemes, if timed correctly, can definitely confuse people.
"I also was targeted as a small business owner quite frequently as well," the mod added. "Random companies would offer to advertise my business on their Instagram page for a fee, but in reality, they bought their followings and were just cashing in on the fees. A lot of new businesses would fall for this, thinking they were getting cheap advertising to hundreds of thousands of followers, when in reality they were paying to advertise to dead bot accounts. Social media scams come in all shapes and sizes, and they can be incredibly tricky to pinpoint."

As entertaining as some of these pictures might look and as distant as some of the facts can seem, scammers await us around every corner both in real life and online. And I'm not saying that to scare you or anything. It's just we have to look out for ourselves. It's not always possible, but we must try. Otherwise, the fruits of our labor may end up in other people's baskets.

Bots that figured out our algorithms but haven't yet figured out those little nuances regarding human interactions and understanding that would make these more believable. My uncle died last year. I just supposedly got a friend request from him last week. I reported the account to Facebook as pretending to be someone else and requested to be updated about the results of the investigation. They sent me a copy of the message they sent to my dad uncle's actual account asking him to confirm that the other account is a fake. 🤦♀️

My wife sells on Etsy and since she had a 400% increase in sales last year, they are calling her often to be in focus groups and such. I got into one of the meetings and told them of all the s**t industrially made that's on Etsy and that they should do something about it. I suggested a "Certified Handmade" mark of sorts. They behaved like it was complete news to them.

A few years back someone (or maybe several someones) were effectively banned from the platform for complaining about sellers "repurposing" bulk purchased rubbish as "hand made". Etsy do not care - they're making $$ off every sale, and it's not in their interests to police the origin of items. Just another sellout.

My daughter got scammed like this on Craig's list. She did send $3,000 but reported the fraud to her bank and (surprisingly) the bank was able to (about 6 weeks later) reverse the money from the scammer back into her account.

My friend was desperate for a rental. Some crazy (literally - he had ID) teen street kid fast talked her into renting "his" place: a fenced off, boarded up place he claimed he was fixing up and hers for $100. That's some desperation, on both their parts.

My ex and I got scammed over a house. We found a nice appartement for 850 euros p.m. wich was believable. We even got to see the appartement and signed a contract. We payed our deposit and first month of rent and when it was time to get the keys we saw more people at the house. Even people with all their stuff ready to move in. It was really sad. We also had stopped our currently lease contract and we had no house. We never got our money back and I had gotten lice from the childeren of the friend where we slept and later we moved in with my mil who hated me. It really really sucked...

Do I understand this as a way of actually dealing with bereavement? Yeah. My grandma was supposed to stay at our house for Christmas, and the spare bed was set up neatly in the office where my computer is for her. I cleaned up all of my stuff too so that she could be comfortable. She died two days before she was supposed to come over and stay with us. I made one of my siblings trash the room for me because I needed my computer for school work but I couldn't be in there and stare at the bed that was made up for someone who would never be there again. But this is definitely a scam. If nothing else because if your kid is in college, chances are she has roommates and friends. Just give them the ps5.

Probably you'll be asked to cover postage, "so i can just send it to you. I'm grieving and can't face seeing anyone or leaving the house right now" or some other little catch between you and the PS5. A lot of cons play on the mark's greed. Other cons prey on compassion. This one tries to do both. The dog sniffing the casket was a nice touch.

Shortcut version: Hover your mouse over the link and look in the corner of the screen for the web page it is sending you to

My number was spoofed before. Some guy called me and started screaming at me that I was trying to get his personal info and he was going to turn me into the police. I talked to him for a minute and sent him a screenshot of my call log then reported it to the police.

I had a similar pop-up. Unfortunately I bought it at first...but then I realized that a) I had been nowhere near adult sites, and b) they spelled "lose" as in "lose all your photos" as "loose." Most rely on scare tactics, but aren't that smart. So yeah, check the facts and the grammar.

They want you to deposit the check and start making purchases the same day. Then after you have spent your money and sent them whatever they requested, either a stop pay comes through on the check or the check turns out to be fraudulent. Then, you are out of pocket for whatever you purchased plus the overdraft charges and the scammers have their products.

I've gotten this one before. Mine was to shop at Amazon, same check from Chase Bank sent to "cover the cost" and wanted me to go buy Amazon gift cards at a local shop, give them the codes from it as proof I bought them, then take a survey on the products I purchased with the gift cards. Huge scam

Oh God my husband and I each get these calls all time. We love f*****g with them. My latest, since being in Canada, has been to answer in French when they claim to be calling from the government. They demand I speak English, so, I switch to normal and say “But this is Canada and I was speaking French. Any government official is mandatory hired to be bilingual”… then they hang up.

Back in the 80's, we have all been telling grandma to never give out info or money over the phone. Now 40 years later, people are falling for these scams. The local electricity company does not take gift cards or i tunes for payment. I have zero sympathy for people who fall for these scams. Americans know how companies send their bills and Americans know the police or government never call.

Right. While I'm pretty sure that the *discovery* of this effect was on accident, not by deliberate design, these scammers have no reason to switch to smarter scams. Yes, smarter scams would work on more people... but these extra people will get suspicious more quickly (thus giving away less money), are more likely to report the scam and more likely to try to get their money back. Whereas the people falling for the obvious scam are likely to hang on as you extend the scam and keep giving them reasons for why they have to give away yet more money. And once they do catch on, they will likely be too ashamed to report the incident.

Best scam I had was when I was "hacked" and got an email telling me that if I didn't pay them $1000, they would release ... "adult videos" of me, taken from my webcam. My response? That I might consider paying to see that magic trick considering I don't even own a webcam. The icing on the cake was that the account that was hacked was in fact, an old minecraft account lmao.
