No One Wants To Adopt This Dog, And Shelter Staff Just Can’t Figure Out Why (UPDATED)
Meet Bear, a sad dog no one adopts, who has been waiting for a loving forever home at an animal shelter for more than 2 and a half years now. The pooch was found as a stray in Flint, Michigan, and has been spending his lonely days at the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) ever since.
“He was about 7 months old and very emaciated,” Kelley LaBonty, director of DAWG, told The Dodo. “He stayed in foster care for a while, but then the foster had family who moved in, and they couldn’t keep him anymore.”
Throughout the years, those who were interested in taking this adorable dog would change their minds at the last second. “We’ve taken him to hundreds of dog adoption events over the years, and he just gets overlooked every time.” This left Bear depressed and heartbroken.
LaBonty took a picture of the cute dog in the kennel. “It went viral because it was a very sad picture… He is depressed in the kennel, as most dogs get, especially after two years of being in a dog shelter… Mostly he just lays on his bed with his head down.” Bear is a very sweet and loving dog, who just wants to be loved. The only thing is that he doesn’t get on well with other pets.
Do you think you can help Bear find a home?
UPDATE: It seems like the sad doggie is finally happy now. This once-abandoned animal found a loving forever home.

Load More Replies...There are some rescues in my area that are just too strict in their adoption process. We live out in the country and we train our dogs. We don't let them out by themselves to just roam and they spend plenty of time outside with us. Sometimes they even get to work on our little farm, like getting to herd the goats back into the fence when they get out. The rescues here automatically won't let us adopt because we don't have a fenced area for dogs to just throw our dogs out into. It may be possible that the agency's policies contribute to Bear's inability to get adopted. I hope he finds a great home soon.
That's been MY experience with a lot of these private rescues. Everything they said as an excuse was a great big red flag that warns either 'this dog has serious behavioral issues they failed to mention' or 'the agency is psychotically-strict.' Meanwhile, the animal suffers, other dogs get put to sleep, and it keeps the puppy mills in business.
Load More Replies...Please, someone adopt him, it breaks my heart. Such a sweet fellow. I dont think its a big problem he dont like other pets - people mostly have just one dog, right? Give him a chance!!
Most people I know with dogs have two, although single males living on their own tend to have one... Sadly if a dog isn't good with pets then that could effect your neighbours if they have pets, or if you live by a park, or going on walks etc. Not deal breakers by any means but a lot of factors to think about. Poor thing.
Load More Replies...I am in the U.K., so I can't give him a home - but I CAN tell you just how FANTASTIC it is to adopt a rescue dog!! I have a gorgeous 'staffie' cross who has been my BFF for nearly 4 yrs now!! She isn't happy around other dogs either...but she is an absolute DARLING with people, young and old!! She had only been in rescue for 3 months before we met, but she was heart broken to be there, as she is such a sociable dog!! I can't imagine how Bear must be feeling after all this time!! My girl has brought such pleasure into my life, I wouldn't be without her!! Go on!!!! Give Bear a chance!! You won't regret it... I just wish he could become part of MY family!! Good Luck Bear!!xxxx
Key words being "He doesn't get along with other pets" - this makes simple tasks like taking him for a walk or going out in public with him challenging. Most people want to adopt a dog that they don't have to worry about, and that's why he's still at the shelter. It will take a special person to adopt this special guy...I'm sure after this story circulates the right person will come along.
Unfortunately here is the key to so many abandoned pets- " people want a dog that they don't have to worry about". There is NO such dog. Having a dog is a huge responsibility, if you can't keep up with regular vet checks, every day walks, proper training for your dog, picking up the poop and so on - just don't get a dog. It is really simple. A well behaved and easy to handle dog is a result of hard work and commitment. Walking a dog who's not good with other pets means only that you will have to do the walking to instead of just letting him run around at a dog park - which actually is a good thing in today world.
Load More Replies...i am a few miles away, i will take him, he will be loved and adored and never lonely i have a yard he can run around but will never be left to the elements. he will be part of the family.
The reason Bear is not good with other pets is that he has known nothing but a solitary life for the last two years. I say to work with him on getting along with other pets and maybe someone will take him. He has not been socialized with people or other pets and needs work and then he will be a better dog to adopt. I live in Alabama and just like Cassie said, there are regulations in my area to at least have a dog, etc., in an enclosed atmosphere. I also live in a rural area and I do NOT keep my dogs penned or tied up. They can venture where they want and being free like they are, they stay around my home anyway, something a penned in animal never has a chance to do, be free to roam. All animals have to check out their surroundings before they become used to everything in their "world". I would most definitely take Bear and if someone would take the time to work on socializing him, it would be to his best advantage.
Yes! He needs actual experience w other animals & proper owner/dog training to improve his self confidence, reduce conflict w other animals.
Load More Replies...Not getting along with other pets is most likely the reason why he hasn't been adopted, the poor baby :(
over 100 people have applied to adopt Bear now so he is getting his home. Hoping the 99 who can't have him, adopt others.
I so very very excited!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET US KNOW WHEN HE GOES TO HIS FOREVER HOME!!! Have he been on FB before!!! Please make sure he's going to people that are going to love him like crazy!!!!!
Load More Replies...I'm always floored by the expressions on animals' faces. I used to think that their faces were just "a face" but you can really see how he's feeling! Someone adopt him!
He certainly looks like a sweet fellow. He's an Alpha male though, and will mix with other contenders. It would certainly be best to let him remain by himself for that reason. ;O
Shared to FB. Somebody please rescue this handsome guy and make his life better.
Awe he looks so sweet ! My sister has a dog that looks just like him and she is the sweetest dog ever. I sure hope Bear finds a home soon , poor little guy.
I had a dog that had this look for 13 years She was the sweetest thing but when left to her thoughts she seemed like she was worried any minute it was all going to crumble down around her. I think this dog could ne a wonderful dog if adopted by a attentive family
Was he adopted finally? This makes me so sad. I truly hope he'll find a loving home.
Any updates on this poor guy? With all the sharing and prayers, hoping to read something good...
I would take it and show him that dog life is wonderful. I keep the horses and the dogs. I live in Slovakia.
Looks SO much like my little dog!!! If this is true and he can be brought to Wales, we'd take him for sure Photo-0022...a1a562.jpg
If only u were in my count, people will adopt u in a heartbeat. I would
Why not see see if a nursing home would consider adopting Bear? He could be a real benefit to the residents and would put a wager into Bear's tail. He just needs to have a chance to feel important! Might be the perfect answer!!!
Aw...I hope divine timing strikes soon and he can live with his forever family happily ever after.
His expressions and posture say it all. He is truly depressed. He will change in a very short time when he'll have the warmth of a family
i love dogs and seeing this just want me to take him home
Is he still with the same people? And does anyone do a follow up on these animals to make sure it was a good fit??
All dogs need time to get used to the other pets in a new home. Maybe people aren't giving him enough time to warm up to the other pets, or aren't spending enough time with them together. He is so cute and him sitting on his bed alone, looking so lonely is pulling on my heart strings. He needs to be on a big farm with tons of animals so he can get used to other pets. I sure hope he finds a loving home soon.
I would take him but I live in Illinois & I do have a chocolate lab who is spoiled to death she is about 9 we got her at about 2 so they said with no shots or anything. How big is Bear & do you think they would get along. I could try to care for him.
If I didn't have 2 dogs already and live in Texas, I would adopt him in a heartbeat! He looks so much like our pittie that passed away 3 years ago....
God bless that shelter for being so patient. most would have murdered him long ago. I hope he got a great home, he deserves it.
After my greyhound (rescued) and Doberman died of cancer , after two years Then I decided I want to adopt again , been to few rescue home, rspca , tried to adopt one, n even tried other type of dog, apparently we wasn't suitable, n when I saw one online to tell my interest I Was told straight away i don't think I am suitable, I gave up, then my husband told me someone want to give away staffi puppies as they have 9 litters, ( not breeder ,accidentally ) Then now I have lovely most loving spoiled dog at home, I was just thinking I could have given a good home for those in rescue centre if they gave me a chance. I hope the beautiful boy will get a good loving home soon.
I'd take him in a heartbeat if I was allowed another dog to bring home.... So sad the story was... So happy he found a forever home....
how can i get him here to me in las vegas? id take him in a second
If i didnt have two in the hhouse with me now, i would do my best to take him...
unfortunately Australia is just too far away, otherwise there wouldn't be a problem getting him a home.
I would mind having Bear but I am in Lawton Oklahoma I am from Hasting MIchigan but after my father died everyone else moved away I have a Labrador Retriever and a American Bulldog and I just bought a house with a private Fence.
I was interested reading till I saw he needs to be the only pet and I have 3 others. Sry.
So glad he found a loving home. I'm sure the people at the shelter were lovely to him, but they would surely be too busy to give him all of the attention and love he deserved.
8 years ago we adopted a black mixed breed dog who had been at the pound for months. He has been a wonderful family member ever since. So glad we found him in time!
Got a Jack Russell and 4 Cats that need a Big Brother and a Yard to Share....
I forgot to add my contact information, please email me at aidanixon@hotmail.com
I live in West Virginia and have a big house and yard, how can I adopt him? I had to put my beloved beagle to sleep last year, but I couldn't bear the thought of getting another dog because I felt I was replacing him However, I am sure Bandit (that was my beagle's name) would not be upset if I adopted Ben.................... I would love the opportunity to give this sweet boy a lovely home
Correction meant Bear and my contact information is on my facebook profile or you can contact me at aidanixon@hotmail.com
Load More Replies...I would have taken him until i got to the part that he doesn't do well with other pets. I have 2 rescued dogs. I hope he finds a home soon.
It's really sad that this is the case. I wonder WHY he hasn't been adopted. Could be a number of reasons. Maybe the families who want to adopt already have a pet and he won't get along with it. Maybe he's actually more aggressive than they're letting on (idk I haven't met him, just saying it's a possibility). Maybe the cost of adoption is too high. Might also be that he doesn't look like a small puppy and possibly looks like a pitt so ppl automatically overlook him (very very sad). And as others have mentioned, it may be that the rescue is too strict! When we rescued our dog, we had to pay $300 (I think?) to get him. They made us fill out a background check and made us sign that we would get him microchipped and fixed and that was it. We brought him home six years ago and he's been part of our family ever since.
This dog should be put down. Warehousing dogs for years in crates or kennels is cruelty. There is no quality of life for this dog. It is foolish and dangerous to try to place a dog that is aggressive toward other animals. Someone's pet or a person will be seriously injured or killed if a animal aggressive pit bull is sent into the public. This dangerous trait cannot be loved or trained out of a pit bull. Attacking and killing other animals is what pit bulls have been purposely bred to do for hundreds of years. It Is genetic and in their dna. This dog will always be a threat. Do the poor dog a kindness and put him to sleep.
Ann Rogers you must be the most ignorant double standard hypocrite of a fake I've ever heard. How dare you claim to be against animal cruelty but are willing to put down this innocent baby who hasn't harmed anyone simply because of its breed. For shame! That's like a white family refusing to adopt a colored child simply because of their skin color. It is no different. PEOPLE make animals regardless of breed aggressive, not the animals themselves. My sister has 3 chocolate labs mixed with pit bull. They are ever so sweet and never have attacked anyone. I would much rather surround myself with dogs like Bear than ignorant selfish people like you
Load More Replies...Look at his face <3 !! I want to adopt the dog but I can't, I live on the other side of the fooking world!!
He looks pit bull or mix of and that is not allowed in my area in New Brunswick and not good with other pets. I really want my own dog but the pet sits require a pet friendly dog. I would love to have been able to take him.
The moment we have all been waiting for. It looks like Bear has left the dawghous after 2.5 long years in a kennel. He has a huge yard to run and will be spoiled by his new mom and dad. He even has a trainer lined up who is donating his services to help Bear and his family adjust. Tears from all who have loved and cared for Bear all this time. Thank you for giving him the chance he needs. Per: Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG)
Has he been adopted yet???? please let us know!!! Last I heard he had 100 wanna bes!!! But did he get adopted?????????
Who do you contact if you want to adopt him. Could not find any information about it.
He needs a FB page with all his attributes, including he must be the only TOP DOG.
Too many people think that Rescued means the the dog has all kinds of problems and has been given up for that reason. NOT TRUE!! Many of them have been surrendered to shelters due to changes in peoples lifestyle ( illness that prevents them from being able to care for the dog, moving, can't take dog with them, etc.) I have always had our dogs for the duration of their lives but reality is that these situations happen. It's no fault of the dog. Some cases are due to people not doing their homework to see what dog is best for them. Our dog is a rescue. She was with a family in James Bay Ont on an Indian reserve. Her family gave her up as they could not look after her properly. There were many dogs that the rescue got there -community dogs running free. Sierra is 3 yrs old and we have had her for just over a year. She was quiet until she got used to her surroundings. Lots of personality. Great feeling we get from giving her a second chance at life. Hope this guy finds a loving home.
He reminds me of one of my parents dogs, who also doesn't do well with dogs besides my parents' other dog. They've spent a lot of time and money to train her, but it hasn't helped. Actually, the issue is usually other dogs assuming she is a threat, so they automatically act aggressive. She isn't the type to back down, so it doesn't go well. Only a few breeds will make her start it. Wonder if the same thing happens to Bear
I would definitely adopt him and I don't see why others wouldn't except I already own a dog :(
Too bad he isn't closer to me, I would take him in a heartbeat. Poor baby.
I want him ..can I adopt this sweet dog I am in Indiana ????? pls, be careful who u adopt to..as there are people on here that adopt for the very reason to sell to universities that kill them and experiment on them or just torture them while the experiment on them...
I see these stories all the time. Usually I can not help because they are too far away. This is close too me and my husband and I said we are going to go get him. Then I read no other dogs. Broke my heart. We rescue and have 5 Basset Hounds. So he would not work with us. I'm heart broken. 😥
So, why hv they not worked WTH him on bad issues all this time, I would love to hv him but my cats would, t. Hope he gets a great home soon.
Any updates on this poor guy? Hoping with all the likes, shares and prayers there's something positive to report?
He could have behavioral issues because he has been in a kennel for all those years..he needs to be taken in by someone who is willing to give him the time he needs to adjust to being free and in a home...it will take someone special because he is a special dog..I hope someone steps up. I wish I could take him..I already have three rescues..good luck little guy...your forever home is out there somewhere
Poor boy. It's understandable that people with other pets -or that have (or plan to have) kids- may have their reservations about a guy who doesn't get along well with other animals... I just hope he finds the correct family soon.
2.5 years, yea right, any shelter would of killed him if he wasn't adopted long before that. This site is starting to annoy me with all the fake stories. At least do your homework.
We are looking for an older dog ..but it must like our 9 year old cat.we are on 5 acres fenced .we want a non aggressive house dog. We are in lapeer county mi
Has anyone ever considered putting a very young (6-8 wk) female puppy with him to see if he has any fatherly or motherly instincts. It would be worth a try and the possibility of being able to adopt him with the puppy would be greater for both.
What's the update on Bear? I live down south, Mississippi, if someone could get him down here I would give him a good home. No dog should go unloved. What is the process for adaption at DAWG
What's the update. I live down south, Mississippi, if someone could get him to me I would love to give him a home here. No dog should go unloved.
Curious - what breed is he? My dog (shelter pet) looks just like him and I've always wondered what she is.
If he's been there for 2 1/2 years why haven't he been socialized with other dogs??
If there was a way to get bear to Austin tx I will adopt him!!! He is beautiful!!!!
So where is he located? They tell you all sorts of things except how to get in touch with the shelter he is in
He looks so sweet! I'm in tears after reading this, nothing unusual for me though I wish I had my own place, even though I'm not local I would come and bring him home with me!! I pray there is a kind loving soul out there that sees this and will give him the furrever home he needs!!
He doesn't get along with other pets. Ok, that gives some extra work and attention and love. Keep him leashed when outside. You got the dog for you and to give him a happy home. I get the feeling you will have a great pal in this sweety.
Why not see if a nursing home would adopt him? He would thrive making the residents happy. Especially those who don't have family to visit. Put a wager n Beards tail. He just needs to feel important!
I just dont get it. But ya know what? Magical things happen when you post on BoredPanda! I know I have shared and ALL of my friends will share. I believe you will witness some of that BoredPanda magic and be OVERWHELMED by the amount of people that will now apply to adopt him! You will be spoiled for choice!!! Please let us know who the lucky new adopter is!!!
we have an identical looking dog Our boy is 7 yrs old he is wonderful with my 8 grandchildren age 26 thru 1 even a greatgrandchild 1 he loves them all but he also is fussy about other animals
AN ALFA DOG? MICHAEL HAD ONE. SHE HATED THE OTHER DOG IN THE FAMILY WHO WAS THERE FIRST AND ATTACKED HER. BUT MIKE LOVED THAT DOG SO MUCH BECAUSE THAT DOG ONLY SAW HIM. THAT DOG WAS A ONE PERSON, PET ANIMAL. SHE PUT UP WHEN I WENT TO SEE MIKE BUT THAT'S ALL. SHE NEVER LOVED ANYONE BUT MIKE.
First you're sad 'cos you're alone. Then you're alone 'cos you're sad. :(
Damn poor guy. He's a good looking dog, and I'd adopt him in a second if I lived in Detroit. Just because of the simple fact that he's been in that kennel for 2.5 long years. Somebody will adopt him after this and other articles spread around the interwebz. Hope we get a follow up story!
if I didn't live in Europe, I'd take him immediately... poor bub... :(
Doesn't get along with other pets? Bummer. I'd take him in a heartbeat.
I would take this little fella right now. How much would fly cost here 🤔
Hard..love dog but i do also love be around pet and human ...its a really scary thing for people the adopt a not so friendly pet with other animal ...its like bringing a really socialy akward person to ur friend b day party ...haha but i hope this guys will find somebody just like him and they can grow together 🤘👊
Unethical, irresponsible and criminal to put this dog aggressive animal into any home.
It’s none of those. These people are trying to keep from going to a home with other animals. My dog was dog aggressive. And I trained him to not be. Now he’s my service dog and goes pretty much everywhere with me. You know NOTHING about what can be done for and through this dog
