Russian Influencers Are Destroying Chanel Bags In Protest Of Sales Ban, The Internet Puts Them In Place By Reminding About The War That’s Still Going On

In response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and despicable war crimes by the Russian army that shocked the whole world, French luxury giant Chanel has stopped sales of its clothes, handbags, perfume, accessories and other items to customers who were intending to use the products in Russia.

Chanel said it has “rolled out a process to ask clients” shopping abroad or “for whom we do not know the main residency” to confirm that the products they are buying “will not be used in Russia.” The fashion house has already shut its stores within Russia, following the steps of many other fashion brands.

“The latest sanctions from the European Union and Switzerland prohibit ‘the sale, directly or indirectly, of luxury items to any natural, legal person or entity in the Russian Federation or for use in the Russian Federation,’” the spokesperson at Chanel said in a statement on Tuesday, noting that it is “currently working to improve the procedure.

Chanel’s ban enraged Russian influencers like Victoria Bonya and Marina Ermoshkina, who have 9.3M and 300k followers respectively, so they are now filming themselves destroying their Chanel purses. They are now accusing the fashion house of “Russophobia” and the attempt to “cancel Russia.”

According to BBC, the French fashion house confirmed in a statement that it was complying with a ban initiated by Switzerland and the EU pertaining to the sale of luxury items to people who intend to use them in Russia.

“This is why we have rolled out a process to ask clients for whom we do not know the main residency to confirm that the items they are purchasing will not be used in Russia,” Chanel said. “We are currently working on improving this approach and we apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused.”

Victoria Bonya, a Russian Instagram model with 9.3M followers, stated she “has never seen a brand acting so disrespectful towards their clients as Chanel”

Chanel’s decision enraged Russian owners of the brand’s handbags: models, television presenters and influencers who accused the brand of fueling hatred toward Russians. They deemed the ban “Russophobia” — echoing Maria Zakharova, Moscow’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, who said earlier this week that Chanel had joined the “Russophobic campaign” to “cancel Russia.”

To find out more about why exactly Russian influencers are cutting their Chanel purses with scissors as well as where the fashion industry stands in the context of the Russian war and its brutal crimes against Ukraine, we spoke with Lina Survila. Lina is a founder and editor in chief of the online cultural magazine “Abstract Stylist,” and a former L’Officiel fashion editor with a decade-long experience in fashion.

“Fashion has always had a powerful impact on the economy. But, it also has always adapted according to the world’s needs. For example, many fashion brands expressed their position on the Russian war and its crimes in Ukraine,” Lina said and added that “As a result, luxury conglomerates and brands left the Russian and Belarusian markets, causing big losses.”

According to Statista, revenue in the Luxury Goods market in Russia amounts to US$2413m in 2022. To compare, most revenue is generated in the United States (US$74,674m in 2022).

Another Russian influencer named Marina Ermoshkina joined the wave of delusional protests claiming “she’s against a brand that supports Russophobia”

Lina explained that “with many Russian influencers declaring propagandist views on the war, it became clear that all Russians must address their government and make a change from the inside. This is why the Chanel brand chose not to sell to Russians.”

Russian DJ Katya Guseva also posted a video of herself destroying her Chanel purse

“Unfortunately, Russian influencers staying safe in luxurious places all around Europe don’t seem to acknowledge the propaganda of their home country and even spread it by showing no compassion for the people of Ukraine. The brand understands the power of image and does not want to be associated with influencers spreading propaganda,” the fashion expert explained. Lina added that “In my view, all brands should follow.”

English Journalist Jonny Tickle pointed out that Buzova even demanded a refund from Chanel for all the luxury goods she had bought

Others said that the furious Russian influencers are like an “involuntary ad” for the brand

The money they might have made selling those bags would have helped a few of the poor Ukrainians carrying what's left of their lives in suitcases and shopping bags. It takes a special kind of assshole to be this callous and shameful.

Exactly! Chanel has already received the money for the purchase of the bags. It isn't as though the amount is deducted from their business when someone destroys it. Ridiculous, petty cancel culture behavior.

Have you ever seen such a gross display of tone deafness and entitlement. And to try to spin it as "Russophobia" as they cut up their own multi-thousand dollar handbags while their neighbors are being driven out of their homes and murdered, my god the nerve of these a-holes. At least they're getting rightfully torn up in their own comments (at least as far as I can tell... not sure what the Russian language ones say).

"Russophobia" propaganda is currently a big thing, but it's intended audience are the Russian people themselves. With videos and articles, they are convinced that other people (all na*is and gays!) are persecuting russians, arresting them for speaking publicly in russian, and shunning them for even owning russion literature or russian dog breeds. Russians genuinely think that Ukrainians are all na*is, on a mission of murdering the russian locals. It's easy to commit war crimes when you don't think that the opposition is even humans.

Russian influenza's were also very upset when Putin blocked Instagram. They didn't care about Ukrainians dying in a senseless war, they were sobbing because they lost their income. After all, posting pictures of restaurant food is more important than the Russian army committing war crimes....

Poor widdle princesses. While people are fighting over staple foods in stores full of nearly bare shelves, the no-influencers aren't getting to buy more overpriced purses because their country is being shunned by civilized nations over war crimes. Wonder if any of these narcissists have even heard the word Bucha?

"Cancel Russia"? WTF, Russia, you're trying to Cancel Ukraine. Also yeah, you really showed 'em didn't you, by *checks notes* destroying your own property. That you also can't replace. Gonna be fun when you're getting ready to go out one day and think, "Where is that cute black purse I always wear with this outfit?...Oh yeah. I cut it up." Gotta love that very Karen mindset of like "Oh, yeah, this huge corporation is going to MOURN losing me, a single individual, as a customer. That will absolutely impact their bottom line enough to care!"

People destroying things they spent money on in protest is my favorite thing to watch. It shows how stupid people are. I refuse to burn, damage, or destroy something in any way to make a point. Why? Because its a waste of my money, I would sell it before i destroy it in protest.

While some Russian citizens are dealing with the fear and heartache of of having family, friends, and loved-ones in Ukraine facing the extremely strict consequences of speaking out against this horrible war, idiot Influencers continue to make everything about themselves. I have Russian a friends who is horrified and heartbroken about the war and Ukraine and is speaking up against the war-crimes committed by Putin, yet these entitled Influencers are angry about a damn bag.

"Influencers" seems to say it all. Honestly, it doesn't seem to matter what country the person is from, if they're an influencer wanting status they're idiots. They're also not smart enough to realize that they're paying for the NAME, not the product. I know there's a lot of backlash against knock off products but to be perfectly honest, a lot of them still look good, hold up great, and cost a fraction of the price. I have 0 sympathy for influencers because unless Russia bans ALL sites where they're active, they HAVE to be getting commentary on what's going on. I dunno. Influencers are people just like us, but at the same time.... they're not. So no, I think this temper tantrum is REALLY stupid but also ironic because, you're gonna cut up a $1,500 bag because of a SALES BAN, and not because what you're cutting up isn't ACTUALLY WORTH $1,500 because it's all in the NAME and awful manufacturing practices? If you're not smart enough to figure that out, I have 0 sympathy for you.

In the latest set of sanctions against Russia, Eu banned importing of Russian alcohol and fish products (alongside with coal and other things). This means no more Russian vodka and caviar for us Europeans! Oh, how can we survive! (Answer: Easily, because we don't care about someone not selling us luxury products.)

What happened in Bucha is an atrocity. Men, women, children... tied up, tortured, dismembered, raped, shot, left in the streets like trash or inside buildings. This is just a place that we KNOW about. Most people in 2022 worry about nukes, missiles, cutting off supply lines, purposely destroying strategic buildings, drones, etc. No. This is 2022 and this HORRENDOUS crap is still happening, face to face. I'm sorry, I don't care what kinda tech we have now, humans are still the same and it's HORRIFIC. Nothing changes. No treaties or agreements, nothing. Humans have NOT evolved, we've learned, NOTHING because that darkness is still inside us, and I think it always will be.

It’s really terrifying. One of my friends is from Belarus and her elder sister is in Russia. My friend and her sister are deeply horrified and saddened by the atrocities happening in Ukraine and stand with the Ukrainian people. My friend was telling me that there is so much propaganda in Russia—people are fed lies and told that Russia is winning and that Russia is right for invading Ukraine. So many news sites and regular sites are censored and anybody who speaks against Putin risks arrest or worse. Thus, the only thing that gets through is this false propaganda. It’s truly scary. I do know that there are good Russian people who have family in Ukraine are against these war crimes being committed.

When people do this it really confuses me. Chanel has already received the money from the bags. Their destruction is meaningless as the target you are protesting obviously doesn't want your business or care about what you think or they'd still be selling the bags. All you've done is rob yourself of a resource you actually want but is unavailable.

People are being way to harsh on these people saying "privilege is one hell of a drug", no propaganda is a drug and honestly I feel bad for these people who are blinded to the truth. Also to be fair, the restricting of products, while it may eventually hit the country's economy, will first hit citizens, many of which are innocent or brainwashed.

They're so self centered and vain, they'd rather use their "influence" to whine about a very inconsequential matter than help the 100's of thousands of people suffering right next door. Why do people think destroying property they already purchased is going to do anything to a big company? I'm not even sure there's enough people that refusing to buy new products would be enough to stop them.

Remember this s**t when anyone tells you "The Russian people all hate Putin and think what he's doing is wrong - they're just too afraid to admit it." They don't. Now, their views might be due to the media environment in Russia and they're being manipulated and if they knew the truth they would actually oppose him - but that's not actually reality. The reality is a vast swath of Russians think they're the heroes and the good guys and that everyone else actually is ganging up on them for no reason.

I understand the urge to tear these women to shreds, but maybe I can refer you all to the article just a short scroll away that breaks down the sort of propaganda that is being fed to the Russians by their media. We are all a product of media influence, no matter how much we try to deny it to ourselves, and these women are no different.

"If you need to sell your Motherland for Chanel, then I don't need such a Chanel." A challenge appeared on the Internet - #ChanelДавайДоСвидания. Fashionistas who are banned from wearing branded items in Russia are shredding handbags worth more than 400,000 rubles with scissors and sending them to the trash. This was the result of a recent incident in Dubai, when Chanel stores began selling bags to Russians only if they sign a paper that they do not live in Russia and will not wear their things on the territory of the Russian Federation. THIS is the REAL REASON of the challenge. Stop spreading lie!

Have you ever seen such a gross display of tone deafness and entitlement. And to try to spin it as "Russophobia" as they cut up their own multi-thousand dollar handbags while their neighbors are being driven out of their homes and murdered, my god the nerve of these a-holes.

Nice to see it’s not just an American thing to refer to anything as Nazis. Chanel is a Nazi brand for... not doing business in your country anymore? I remember that’s definitely all Hitler and the gang did.

Why do people think destroying property they already purchased is going to do anything to a big company? I'm not even sure there's enough people that refusing to buy new products would be enough to stop them.

So many Russians protesting Putin's actions. I wonder if these so called protesters were paid by his minions.

Is it that these influencers are callous or is it possible that due to Putin's control over media that have not received the full story and have been successfully brainwashed into believing they are the victim?

This is just as stupid as when the MAGA chuds 'boycotted' Keurig and destroyed the products they had already bought. And yet they're the ones going around calling people out for virtual signaling. F*****g morons.

Literal c***s, actual despicable bitches, I hope they all lose everything and have to eat raw turnips in a flat with no electricity for the rest of their lives, and get cancer.

They don’t have a free press in Russia. I’m assuming these women are not reading what we are reading, and instead getting only propaganda. It’s unfortunate to read so much mindless hatred in BP comment's

b******t, if they had IG account - they knew. They choose to not see. IG and FB is banned just recently. News were all over social media, telegram, Annonnymus printed the news to anyone in RU who had their printer plugged to the internet, so.... just stop protecting them.

It’s scary the amount of liberals beating the war drum and wanting Russians dead! The EU and American neo cons and neolibs have been poking Russia all these years and now shocked they’re responding. Shame we can’t stop having wars
