I went to Iceland with one of my friend in September 2014. We rented a 4x4WD and went for road trip, slept in a tent at the camping site, sometimes slept overnight in the car. We tried not to depend on any accommodation but we were too tired and stayed in a hotel and cottage for 2 nights each.
The main highlights on this trip was to hunt aurora borealis, fortunately or unfortunately we only managed to see it for 2,5 nights. Most of the nights were cloudy and sometimes we were lucky enough to have a small opening in the sky and spotted the green activities happening behind the thick clouds.
We visited various spots on the island. Starting with Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland to Thingvellir National Park for a night stay. Then we drove up West to Kirkjufell and stayed in a bunker hostel. The following routes were Gullfoss-Geysir-Vik-Seljalandfoss-Skogafoss-Skaftafell-Jokulsarlon-Blue Lagoon and we came back to the city for the last stop.
