We know just how much you love your pets, dear Pandas. If you’re like us, there isn’t anything in the world that you wouldn’t do for your furry (or scaly, or feathery) friends. We’d go to the ends of the earth if that meant that they’ll be happy and healthy. So when a health emergency comes up, some of us panic and rush to the vet, which is a completely normal reaction.

However, in some cases, what we thought was a major problem turned out to be something completely silly. Twitter user Kristin Chirico started up a fun and serotonin-filled thread about ridiculously funny emergency vet bills, and a ton of pet parents replied with their hilarious stories. Dogs with ‘happy tail syndrome’ are just the tip of the smiley iceberg.

Scroll down to put a smile on your face, dear Readers, and be sure to share this article with your pet-loving pals, too. Oh, and don’t forget to upvote the tweets that you enjoyed the most. When you’re done with this awesome list, consider dropping by the comment section to tell us all about your not-so-serious vet visits and how much you love your pets. (Cute cat and dog pics are always appreciated!) Meanwhile, read on for Bored Panda's interview about pets with the PDSA, the UK’s leading vet charity.

That is surprisingly wholesome. I'm surprised the vet was able to figure it out.

My dog does that with sneezes. I'll sneeze then he sneezes, then I'll fake sneeze and he'll sneeze again. We can do that for a time and it always cracks me up!

One of my cats acts so strange whenever I cough. She'll make little chattering/chirping sounds and sometimes will even run out of the room. She only does it when I cough - she doesn't make a sound when my husband coughs. Anyone else ever experience this?

Kristin’s Twitter thread went viral and had nearly 11k likes at the time of writing. One thing that it showed us is that, fortunately, not all health emergencies are as bad as they seem. There’s also a subtle hint there that vets have the patience of saints and the sense of humor of stand-up comedians. What would we do without them?

I brought a little kitten home. She was 8 weeks, old enough to leave her mother, just small and dainty. She was afraid at first, naturally, then started to explore. I watched her, trying out names to find what suited her. Then this huge rumble burst out of this little kitten and I promply exclaimed "Diesel !". Diesel was the loudest purrer I ever had and sang contentedly to herself so much of the time. She palled with the fluffy Norwegian cat I got, who grew to twice her size: they spent hours curled up together, a big heap of purry, furry cat. She died aged 13 and I still miss her. Hahahaha! I'll do you one better. Guy calls our veterinary clinic in a right panic. "OH my god!! My cat has something wrong, but I don't know what!" "OK sir, tell me a little about the symptoms." "He has a hole in his back!" "OH dear, bring him right in." At this point I'm thinking ruptured abscess because cats frequently bite each other on the a*s during mating/fighting. Guy rushes in and I heard him to an exam room. "Can you show me the wound sir?" Guy proceeds to hand the cat to me a*s-end first whilst lifting its tail and shouting "It's this thing here that looks like a bellybutton!" "Umm..sir, that's your cat's a**hole."🤣🤣🤣 I felt bad for the guy, but I laughed so hard I nearly passed out.

On the other hand, I have a cat that never purred. I've had her for two years, born in my garage and not a single purr has come out of her so far. I was very concerned at first, but I adopted her two sisters as well and none of them purr much, if ever, so I guess it's a family thing. I've had more than a dozen cats in my life so far and I learn something about them everyday.

Purring is a learned behavior in cats. If their mom didn't purr the kittens won't learn how to do it. But, they can learn it from another cat if they're exposed to one that's also in the household.

Some cats have very raspy purrs. A friend's cat sounded like a broken lawnmower. I grew up with cats but I was still concerned for a short bit before I figured out what the noise was. Her snoring took even longer to figure out.

Relax. The dog clearly was not in a critical state and at lower doses there is no treatment needed other than letting them sleep it off. Vets deal with enough without people like you saying their clients should go elsewhere just because they were able to have a rare lighthearted moment with a client.

Cannabis in it's natural plant form cannot get you high from ingesting. The THC has to be decarboxylated at 220 degrees F. A properly made cannabis THC edible will kill a dog. Good story tho.

My best vet story: a man was working on his car in his garage when the family dog wanders through acting drunk. They don't even call just rush the dog in. Everyone is thinking dog got into antifreeze. We start an IV to flush him out and protect the kidneys as much as possible and send them to the nearest emergency. Turns out their teenage son had a pot stash in his room and the dog found it. Two things were learned that day: pot intoxication and antifreeze toxicity look very similar, and you can test a dog for cannabis with a drugstore urine test. Also dogs are more sensitive to THC than people, takes much less to affect them and much longer for it to leave the body. Tl/dr dogs absolutely can get high from eating straight marijuana. Oh and in an epic parenting move, the parents sold the kid's car to pay the emergency bill. This was long ago and pot was illegal.

According to the vet, pets need to be allowed to behave in ways that are natural to them. That’s where owners come in: they can help by providing a good environment.

It's also not the human's fault if the cat has other food sources. The OP could be feeding her the exact right amount but the neighbours might be chucking her scraps or she's snacking on trash.

Growing up we took in a starving cat off the street. Fed her the same amount as all our other cats (had two others). But she ballooned into the fastest creature on earth, couldn't clean her rear. Vet told us that she probably starved in utero, and now her body was tuned to pack on any extra calories to fat as quickly as possible. We had to regularly shave her butt.

Yes! Love your cat properly by keeping them at a healthy weight. Keep them stimulated with toys and activities that make them exercise and keep their weight down. Research the right diet and talk to your vet and maybe get a second opinion if you don't trust the vets words about the right cat food

“A couple more pounds than USUAL this year”??? Holy c**p, how much does this poor cat’s weight fluctuate?! The average female adult cat should weigh 8-9 lbs. An 8-lb cat gaining ONE pound is 1/8th of its current body weight. That is like me (150 lb human) gaining 19 pounds.

Sorry, that this breed is supceptible to bloat. Fortunately my FIL is a vet, so we call him he tells us to meet him at the office. He looks at her, takes her temp, does a full eval and then decides to take some x-rays. He calls me back and shows me the problem. The dog decided to eat an entire bag of cat food that one of my daughters had in her room for her cat. I have to say a little embarrassed but at least it didn't cost me $500 to find that my dog is just a glutton.

Not to mention that brachycephalic dogs just can’t get enough air because of their flat snouts, to have a lot of stamina on walks, especially if it’s really warm outside. 2 kilometers may not be much to us, but is like running the Boston Marathon for such a dog.

I can 100% vouch for this. I had a cat for years that was queen of the condos. She would prowl around and take all comers--dogs, raccoons--she was a beast. But, she got old and when she lost her first fight, she became lethargic. Checked for wounds and found nothing. Vet said she was depressed which totally matched her behavior.

Yep. My now 20.5 y/o cat was originally my farm cat. Many squabbles over turf with some ferals. His nose is permanently scarred and hairless from all the fights over 10 years. He too would be listless and ill behaving after all skirmishes, win, lose, or broken up by a dog. For the last 10 years he's been a house cat and the strays still challenge him through windows and spray our exterior doors to mark what is now their territory.

Animals feel embarrassment just like we do. So don’t laugh at your dog or cat right in front of them when they fall down or make a mistake. You’re shaming them for something accidental—-that also happens to you. How would YOU like it if someone laughed at you when you did something like that? Only laugh with them when they’re trying to entertain you, never laugh at them. Doing that to animals or people is just cruel bullying, and bullies are nothing more than worthless assholes.

With cats it is very important to take not eating seriously since their livers get damaged very quickly. I'm assuming it's important for all animals but for cats this is firsthand knowledge. Or secondhand since the vet told me.

I had this with my bunny "Moppel", he sat quietly in the corner, did not move or eat. His girlfriend "Flöckchen" was fine. Then we learned - by smell when patting - that Moppel obviously had tried to sniff Flöckchen's butt, and she had peed on his head to get rid of him. Moppel just was depressed because he lost his dignity! 😀

Currently treating her for a bad case of being constipated. She has shown absolutely no signs of being in distress! You never know with pets, which is why you take them to the vet for checkups!

My dog, a terrier mix who is now about 15, started doing what I call fake-outs when we take him out to pee, but he doesn’t really have to go. He’ll lift his leg, hold it there a couple seconds, and put it back down. He thinks he’s fooling us, but seems to forget we can figure out he didn’t pee, because there’s no puddle. Ahh Scruffy. You tried, but didn’t think it all the way through first. At 15, he’s an old man, so there might be a little doggy dementia (Canine Cognitive Disorder) at work inside his little brain. Poor little guy.

My old golden retriever used to do this. We'd let her out to go in the yard and when she came in, she'd usually get a treat. Got to the point where she'd go out and walk right back in to get her treat. We need to give these animals more credit. They're way smarter than we think.

Had a cat named Ringo (he was my cat before I got married, who died in 2004—RIP Wrinkle! You are very much missed!) who did the same thing, but he was actually constipated. We called it “having a cork in his butt”. He would go to the litter box and squat, nothing would come out, then he’d jump out of the box and and skitter and jump around like he was crazy. Like his “cork was chasing him”. When he finally passed it and began eliminating normally and feeling so much better, we were happy that Ringo had finally “popped his cork”. (No, we didn’t just sit around and make jokes about it, we took Ringo to the vet, who looked him over, and sent us home with a tube of Laxatone to give him, which did soften things up enough for the poor boy to finally get back to normal in that department.)

I took my pet rabbit to the vet as kid as he/she (I wasn't sure at the time) developed a huge blister on his belly. My mom wanted to pop it with a needle. We didn't thankfully. So on that vet visit we discovered 1)my rabbit was a male and 2)rabbit testicles are always visible. Sometimes they are up inside, sometimes only one drops down and looks like some weird cyst if you hadn't seen one before. Poor guy. :)

About 20 years ago, I bought a puppy. From a liquor store. My grandma asked me why I named him Damien. I thought she didn't like the name. She said it's a girl. I said no he's not! She said look at this! I thought the little thing the female dog pees from was his weenus.

Yes, even male dogs—-and cats—-have nipples, just like human males, and just like human males, their nipples are totally useless and I guess only there for show.

Male mammals typically have rudimentary mammary glands and nipples, with a few exceptions: male mice do not have nipples, male marsupials do not have mammary glands, and male horses lack nipples and mammary glands. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammary_gland

Generally speaking, If its got fur, its got nipples, unless its a dolphin which although has no fur, has nipples. But seriously, pay attention in school kids. Mammal = mammary glands ie nipples.

Omg, one of my older brothers (Mr. Smartypants became a teacher no less) once asked me, as he's petting my male dog, why he had nipples. I gave him a "are you completely daft" look and said, YOU have nipples, why? Lmao...

This one's a classic. I think most people are unused to seeing nipples on their pets end up taking them to the vet at some point.

A friend of mine rides horses at the local stable, once said that horses are the dumbest and weirdest animals around at times. They say cars can spook a horse, but then so can the wind, or a tree, or the ground.

The last horse I had would change what spooked him every few months. Sometimes it would be things painted on the pavement, like stop ahead. Next it would be small puddles. Riding along musing about something or other when suddenly he would give a sideways, straight legged jump and then give snorting breaths at whatever. Thank goodness for muscle memory or I would have slid right off that English saddle many times.

I used to own a horse who was afraid of carrots, because I snapped one in half in front of her once and the sound startled her. She'd eat them if you snuck them into her manger when she wasn't looking, but if they were in your hands? Terrifying!

My cat spends close to an hour doing what can only be described as yelling at me if I've been away - he has a large vocabulary. He follows this with several days of refusing cuddles - he is very cuddly. It upsets me as we are his 3rd owners and I worry he is stressed so my parents came down last time and spoiled him. He still yelled at me, but cuddled up.

Claire pointed out that owners have to remember that more pets require more resources. They have to have the means available to take care of all of their furry friends. “When you have multiple pets, make sure to provide them with their own resources such as food bowls, water bowls, beds, and litter trays for cats.”

May just be badly written. If it is something soft like a sock that will pass, then it is better to let nature take its course rather than operate. If the vet didn't spot the sock, then I'd be asking for my money back, and never go there again!

Came here to say the same thing! Stop leaving all these articles of clothing lying around! If the dog is opening your dresser, put child safety locks on them or lock your bedroom door. There has to be a solution that doesn't involve spending that much money at the vet. Have somebody come take your dog to the dog park or take them to a decent doggy daycare if they are understimulated and solve their boredom by stealing/chewing/eating your clothes!

There’s nothing wrong with loving animals. In fact, it's wonderful. However, we all have to understand that love also means responsibility, not just cuddling pets 24/7. Some folks rush into pethood without thinking things through. And that ends up hurting everyone in the long run.

It's very important that your male cat drinks plenty of water. Males are more susceptible to urinary blockages. Get a continuous flow water fountain, let them drink out of faucets, etc. They need to stay hydrated.

“One big mistake that pet owners may make is to get their pet without learning what owning them may involve. There is so much to think about to give our companions the best life that we can, so it’s a great idea to plan ahead and do lots of research before getting a pet,” the vet suggested.

I had a ferret who ended up with a hairball made of MY hair that had to be removed. Apparently, anxious ferrets can turn to eating their owner's hair from the floor/brush/etc to soothe themselves. The vet had heard of it, but never saw it before & saved the giant, auburn hairball in a vial of preservative to bring with him to the next exotic vet conference he went to for "show and tell". I started calling him "the $1800 ferret", because that was the cost for the surgery.

I assume there's more to this story, becasue you can't just go and get an anxiety diagnosis after ONE single vet's appointment. The cat has to go through at least a couple of tests and try differen things before reaching that conclussion, I think.

    1. That is a gorgeous bunny 2. Bunnies can be such food snobs! You’re supposed to give rabbits pelleted food along with hay and fresh greens and such, and while my old man here loves carrots and other treats, as far as his main sustenance, he refuses to touch anything other than pellets, and will only really eat one brand. I mean, I guess it’s not a huge deal since he’s made it to 12 years old so far, but every time I try to make his diet healthier, he turns his nose up at it

Yes, one should definitely switch gradually, especially with small pets / rodents as they can be very sensitive (not picky or snobbish).

Cats are creatures of habit, and most don’t cope with big changes very well. That’s why, if you move, you need to keep your cat inside the new house for a week or two, so they know this is now their home. Otherwise, if they get out, they’ll try to go home—-to the old house. You may lose them forever that way if you realize it too late.

We moved into this house two years ago and the 19 year old cat has decided that yes we do live here now and I can walk around the house and not just live in the office. She has been like the anytime I had moved before she would pick a room live there for a year then come out like nothing was ever weird.

I'm so glad my cat is not so high strung. He likes any food you'll give him and isn't freaked by us moving stuff around. I can move his litter box or water or food and he just adapts. I try not to do it often anyway, but when I do have to for whatever reason, he's just fine.

Got a new duvet cover. Cat stayed on the bed for 3 days, but he did venture to his room to eat and go but I never saw him do that because his room is off the main bedroom. Finally after 3 days he ventured back out into the rest of the house and his normal nap spots. He just liked the new duvet cover that much.

Foxtails and wild rye seeds are easily sniffed up by dogs and with their backward facing spines, those seeds don't come out on their own. Indeed they can penetrate any tissue, inside or out and kill your pet. Lost a St, Bernard to a foxtail that entered through her cheek but couldn't be found by the vets. No idea how long it had been working its way in from the outside. She died suddenly the next day. Learn emergency procedures for this type of problem if it occurs in the field or away from a vet. Noses, ears, paws and chest are most common places.

This happened twice to one of our cats. First time I was getting really worried watching her gag and cough. I thought maybe she had roundworms. Then hubby noticed a green stub peeking out of her nose and pulled out a blade of grass that was 4 inches long. Next time we knew what to look for.

I thought you meant the dog and I was like "they have much better sense of smell than humans" but now that I understand the question...How do vets pinpoint that? Did they ask the humans what had happened within the last 24 hours and the humans said "we had boiled shrimp for dinner last night" or whenever.

So, they didn't think to wait until he groomed himself to see if he could take care of it on his own? Or if Casper is part of a multi cat household and gets along with the other cats, they could get that spot on his chin? What about smelling him to see if it smelled like cat food (not weird in context, definitely weird out of context)? What about watching him as he ate to see that he is a messy eater?

I have a horrible story about a vet in Sydney. A friend took his dog to the vet when it came time for the dog to be put down, and instead of putting the needle in near the heart where they're supposed to, they put the needle somewhere else (I forget where) and it literally took the dog about 20 minutes to pass away, and the whole time the dog was absolutely SCREAMING in pain!!! It traumatized my friend SO MUCH!!! I feel so, so bad for that dog!!!

Had to take my parent's dog to the ER vet while they were away once. She did have something up with her (an allergic reaction causing nausea) but they noted on her papers that her heartrate was up but they seriously believed "she just wants to go home," and was only "nervous." She's fine now but I was impressed they could tell between her sick symptoms and her "I really don't like this place" anxiety.

The night before I was to leave for England from the west coast of the US, my cat started acting different. I told her to please get well by the morning. She didn't. I cancelled my trip and took her to the vet, The vet did X-rays and came out and said: "Do you know what's wrong with her? She has constipation." Constipation. It cost me twice as much to get a new ticket.

My great aunt passed a while back. We took in her cat, Lenny. My mom later ran it over with her minivan in the driveway, it's head. This bulged his eye out and he was in lots of pain. My dad decided to euthanize it by bullet to the head. He buried it. Many hours later, Lenny was scratching at the door. $2,400 later and that cyclops is still kickin.

Even when you sleep, your body still moves around a little, like turning on your side or whatever. It's a natural reflex, to keep from having too much pressure on any one place for too long, and also just for comfort, of course. But sometimes you might sleep so deeply that you don't move at all for awhile. If you're laying in an awkward position, you can wake up sore (like when you wake with a crick in your neck). If you're laying on your arm, or leg, or even hand you can wake up to it feeling numb, or tingly (pins and needles). That's sleeping too hard. That's what happened to this kitty.

Laxatone. It’s an animal laxative. Comes in meat and fish flavors. Some cats and dogs like it and will willingly eat it, others not so much. So you can just put it on their mouth (it’s a thick sticky gel), and they’ll have to lick it off and ingest it. It will clear up constipation right away, or at least in day or two for the more stubborn cases. It’s also good for bloating (but just the overeating bloat, not the bad bloat), if your cat or dog makes a pig out of themselves and overeats, then ends up bloated and uncomfortable.

We had to use something similar, to help our cat not get stopped up or puke from hairballs. He was one of the picky ones who wouldn't eat the gel himself. Husband and I had to work together, one of us holding him, and the other prying his mouth open, and scraping a fingerfull of gel over his bottom front teeth, onto his tongue. He swallowed it easily after it was in his mouth though, lol.

Yeah you never know but great they just left it outside. And some dogs are more sensitive to chocolate and other things they shouldn't have than others. My big boy has a cast iron system and nothing he has consumed ever affected him. My little boy has a very sensitive tummy. Big boy ate an ambien, gave me a heart attack and made me miss work so i could monitor him after vet visit and showed zero signs of being affected; should've been very lethargic and sleeping all day but was his normal energetic self. Little boy became really doped up from benadryl (vet provided) and excessively slept. (Big and little are age references, not size and both are same size/weight and very similar breed mixes)

It sounds like something scared the c**p out of that cat. When they are terrified they will scratch or bite anyone, family or not. We've all heard don't try to break up fighting dogs, they might bite you. Same goes for cats.

We finally figured out he was playing sick to get out of having to go for a walk. He wasn't used to having to actually walk on his walk.

Dog was panting alot and stiff. My husband begrudgingly took her to vet where we paid $400 for vet (husband agreed) to say our dog was 8 yo and some arthritis. I told them they were BOTH wrong. I know my kids! I didnt want to be right but she's now being tested for Cushings. Also knew when my other dog had cancer with no visible signs. That was soul crushing. Now everyone knows not to ever question me when I tell them something is wrong with my kids! Go with your gut. Even if you're wrong at least you're pet is safe.

Yeah, I learned that, too. Got our late cat a new litterbox with a door flap, thinking it would cut down on the smell. (Yes we cleaned his box often. But when a cat shíts, even in a clean box, it STINKS. Cat shít is just pungent like that.) The box was in the laundry room. As were my linens. Well, a few days later I realized he'd been shítting behind the washer, & píssing all over a big pile of clean sheets. I can't remember how many loads of laundry I did that day, but I know I had to wash every sheet & comforter I owned, & I know I was cussing the whole time, lol. Come to find out, the door flap was catching just a little, on the plastic liner bag we had in the box, & making it slightly difficult for The King to exit his lavatory. And his uppity àss didn't like that. Took the door flap off, which defeated the purpose of buying that particular box, but he was happy. I wasn't happy about having to psychoanalyze a dàmn cat, lol, but I was definitely happy that my laundry & room stayed clean!

Some cats do this if they don't feel well. Or if you aren't keeping the litter box clean enough. We had a cat that was having UTI's and was peeing behind a trunk. We didn't know until the smell became pungent.

When I came home after 3 weeks being gone I was worried because our youngest cat had been biting & growling at my family while I was gone. The moment I came in she trilled & purred and let everyone love on her. Cats really hate change. Lol

My dogs have a 'grass' mat on the patio to PP on. If I don't clean it 'on schedule' they will peek out the dog door to check it. If it's still dirty… they'll go inside, right at the dog door! POOP HEADS!

Because we don’t know all the factors in this dog’s life, could be a thyroid problem, steroid weight gain or any number of things, so we shouldn’t judge.

Anger does not make cats pee blood. He's got urinary crystals that are cutting him inside, or possibly a fierce UTI. You need a new vet, preferably one that isn't trying to kill your cat.

I question this... Peeing yes but actual blood? That's not normal and I'd ask to run bloodwork.

I looked it up on Twitter, and the owner says Bill was negatively checked for crystals and UTI. She has another cat that had crystals before, so she knows what to watch. Must have been a physical reaction on stress.

If you can keep your dog controlled, they don't always need to be. It can actually be detrimental to them. There are been a lot of studies lately showing that major joint issues caused by altering a dog, especially at a young age that most shelters do it.

Rabbits are feeders which means they are born to breed if you deny them that ability it is a cruel life for them. Spay or neuter them to ensure they life a happy life.

This has happened to my 12# Aussiedoodle. She sadly doesn’t even have a nub. When they have a nub or tail it lifts when they poo. With ours, you can’t feel a nub but you also don’t see her booty hole even when she is trimmed short. It can be easy to miss. Usually it takes her butt scooting on rugs for us to realize she needs help because you can’t always see it and even if we are picking her up a lot, we aren’t necessarily touching her booty.

Toads are POISONOUS to cats and dogs. Spent 7000 bucks for a week at emergency hospital and various tests. Found out my Punkin had eaten a toad and it took that long to digest and leave her system. In the mean time, no eating, but vomiting and lots of tests. If your dog or cat licks a toad wash out their mouths, do not allow them to swallow the water. If they eat a toad take them to the emergency vet and tell them.

Cane toads will do this but can be deadly to pets. Unfortunately one of my dogs just won't get the memo that licking cane toads is a bad thing to do! The best thing to do is immediately grab a damp washcloth & start wiping down your dog's tongue & mouth, keep it up for 10-15 minutes, rinsing out the cloth with fresh water constantly. Don't get too much water on the cloth, you don't want them to swallow the water with the toxins in it. But just get rid of those toxins ASAP! We are in Queensland, Australia & those freaking toads are rampant some summers. Damn those stupid scientists who thought releasing a load of cane toads into the cane fields would be a great idea! They didn't bother with a controlled test because then they would have discovered that they don't actually like the bugs they were supposed to eradicate! But they do love our climate & breed faster that the rabbits did! Which was another stupid idea, but that's a whole other story...

Pixie, not all that unusual or mean, depending on the limp. You pay close attention, evaluate the paw and, sometimes, just let nature takes its course while not letting your dog run around as usual and letting said paw rest.

That is an absolutely ridiculous money grab by the vet!! A quick look at the cat's rear end by a vet would have told him/her what sex the cat was. A bonus being a boy was that it's also very easy to discover if he is neutered or not. That would have taken all of 30 seconds. So $150 for 30 seconds work, what a rip off!

Tip if you think your dog is constipated: Take a matchstick and put the head up their b*tt. It's called "matchsticking" and very common in the show world to get your dog to poop. If they don't poop after that, then yes they might be.

My best guess: 8 in dog years is middle aged/old (depending on breed), which like in humans tends to come with some ailments and a more relaxed attitude toward life stuff. They may have been worried about their dog being less excitable or having tummy aches are something like that.

Some rescue dogs are age ???? best guess. And the guess can be off, so you're assuming one age so when a limp occurs you're worried they're injured but it turns out they're older than you thought and it's just stiffness.
