Bride Gets Perfect Revenge On MIL And SILs After Discovering They Purchased The Same Dress With Plans To Wear It At Her Wedding

Bride Gets Perfect Revenge On MIL And SILs After Discovering They Purchased The Same Dress With Plans To Wear It At Her Wedding

There’s a million-billion ways to ruin a wedding.

Sure, some are more ingenious approaches than others, but it does feel like there’s just too much potential to make a wedding far less enjoyable for the bride or groom.

Well, knowing this (and being aware of the specific nuances that were pre-planned behind one’s back), the bride and groom can actually take measures to prevent any wedding ruining from happening. Well, OK, not prevent it, but definitely flip it around so that it would be ruined for someone other than the bride and groom.

A woman who has done this exact kind of wedding-ruining-flipping has recently shared her tale with Reddit, and people were drawn in.

More Info: Reddit

You just don’t mess with someone’s wedding day—even if you’re family, it doesn’t give you a get out of trouble free card, so be ready to face the consequences

Meet u/EsmerldaWeatherwax, a Redditor who recently recalled her wedding and all the drama around it from 20 years back.

The story goes that Esmerlda has a mother-in-law who hated her and kept getting under her skin on a constant basis. She was overly religious, controlling, manipulative, that sort of jazz. As for OP, she was an antithesis of sorts—think “evangelical Catholic meets goth atheist” kind of situation.

A Redditor shared how she made sure her mother-in-law, as well as three sisters-in-law who planned to dress the same for the occasion, wouldn’t ruin her special day

Not only was all of MIL’s continuous microaggression a problem, OP also pointed out that she’d been religiously traumatized, which did not help with a zealot in the family, and it also felt like MIL was sometimes deliberately sabotaging things.

So, given all of this, you can imagine the vast sea of potential shenanigans that MIL could have embraced when OP agreed to honor her partner’s wish to get married. She agreed, but under the condition that it would not be held in a church. Hubby had no problem with that.

The story goes that the lucky lady was set to get married, but her MIL—who never liked her—was up to no good and trying to push her agenda

Well, two days later, the “blasphemy” was detected and a priest popped up at their door. Turns out, MIL was having none of their atheistic decisions and was already pushing an agenda on them. That wasn’t an issue, though, as OP was nice about it, explained the situation, and it actually went better than one would assume—it became an unlikely friendship. But more on that later.

This prompted a confrontation. One that OP had to persuade her hubby about as it was his beloved side of the family, and one that led to some shouting, but one that ended comparatively well as there was “frosty civility” now.

Unfortunately, an intervention of sorts was not enough to make things right, though it did help a bit

Well, fast forward a year later, OP and pretty much the entire family went dress shopping. After picking out the least of all evils (OP’s not too fond of dresses), she picked out the one and bought it… only to later get a call from the store with an interesting piece of information—the mother-in-law as well as three of her sisters-in-law also bought the same dress. What were they up to?…

Without hesitation, OP went back to the dress store and got a different one—a dark purple affair with a black trim—all while heavy metal revenge music played in the background. Not really, but you can imagine the scene. This was the point when she also got The Idea.

Once things started going forward with the wedding, that’s when the MIL, accompanied by 3 SILS, decided to go rogue

Image credits: Paula Satijn (not the actual photo)

In short, she restructured her wedding aesthetic around this concept. And not just that, when you think about it. She had her female guests dress in their wedding dresses—many paid good money for them, and only wore them once, so this was their chance to relive it. Besides this, she had her mother and brother’s wife dress purple just like her.

OP’s brother was the maid of honor (yes, you read that correctly), and his wife was OP’s husband’s best man (again, you read that correctly). Oh, and the priest? He was the MC.

They thought they could secretly get the same dress as the bride and show up to the wedding, stealing the thunder, but they were in for a surprise

So, the MIL and SILs all showed up in their dresses… only to drown in a sea of dresses, becoming just like everyone else and having their plan to stand out foiled as soon as they stepped into the venue.

What is more, throughout this story, OP’s husband seemed reluctant to confront the family, or to even believe the things they were up to. At first, he was convinced nothing was really wrong and MIL did not really hate OP. But this was the moment the hubby stepped up and once the unsatisfied SIL approached him, she shushed her. You can imagine, in context, it was the middle finger equivalent. They had won.

The bride’s plan was to redo the wedding aesthetic a bit by making the 4 blend into the sea of other wedding dresses

Image source: Paula Satijn (not the actual photo)

And it doesn’t end here. For one, OP still puts on that dress if she knows MIL will be at the same event—she’s just that petty. But also, the long story got updated with more context from OP in response to people’s questions and comments. Things like not being from the US, specifying her beliefs, what priesthood is, that the original dress cost $300, among other things.

Besides a shout out to the dress store, which unfortunately is no longer open, but still props to Sally, Kylie, and Georgia, folks appreciated how the priest was a badass in this story, how OP not only took revenge, but also made a whole lot of women happy by allowing them experience their dresses again, and with some even arguing that it isn’t petty revenge, but rather epic revenge.

At this point, folks online were saying that this wasn’t petty revenge, but rather epic, elaborate revenge, so props to the bride!

Overall, people approved, and it showed! The post got a tad bit over 30,000 upvotes with a nice variety of Reddit awards, amounting to just 1 short of a beautiful 100 awards. You can see the post in context here.

I love this so much - but I can’t help but wonder how the MIL and SILs thought this would go down if OP hadn’t known about the dresses beforehand. I can’t see it reflecting well on them, showing up in the same dress as the bride. How does that score you any points in the first place?

They probably didn't care whether they received negative or positive attention, just by showing up in the dresses it would take some attention away from the bride. The bride wouldn't stand out in her photos because there would have been four other people looking just like her. It was a narcissistic protest and would have meant that the bride wouldn't have had completely happy memories of her wedding day.

I'm Christian too, into all things fantasy and sci-fi was into DnD when some people thought it was devil worship. I don't get fanatics, they just push people away from God by showing how awful they are while claiming to represent God. Also, I've never seen nor heard of anything scientific that goes against God existing. God gave us brains and expects us to use them. Also gave us hearts and expects us to use them as well. So many "christians" blow it on both thinking and compassion/loving/understanding.

Now *this* is the perfect wedding. I'm a little annoyed with brides complaining of their "perfect" weddings being "ruined" because someone wore a floral dress with a white background, or in some way broke some arbitrary rule dictated by the bride. This was a deliberate attempt at sabotage that was brilliantly thwarted by the bride and made for a memorable wedding, and a strong marriage. I bow before her awesomeness.

You know, Jesus Christ always wanted us to appeal to people with love, not hate. It’s a shame the church traumatized OP as a kid. A painful reality. Who am I to judge an atheist? Who are any of us, if we do not earnestly live in the love we profess? The door to heaven is open to all of humanity! Our priority should be to gently help each other see the option of God, rather than to be petty about whatever puts us on the highest horse. And we should RESPECT every person’s freedom of choice. Because God respects and loves everyone! That’s His choice!

It's a good story, but I'm leaning towards fiction. There could have been wedding pictures with blurred faces as examples, but no. It's an easy way to increase popularity on Reddit.

What is an Evangelical Catholic? I thought Evangelicals were a Protestant group. I was not raised in a Christian home, so perhaps this is a misunderstanding on my part. Also, I didn't think a Catholic priest could marry a couple if they weren't both already Catholic. I had a friend who had to convert from Anglican to Catholic to marry her husband by a priest. It was a whole long process.

She might possibly be a Protestant, but I don't think so. In recent years, the term "Evangelical Catholic" has been adopted by high church elements of the Methodist and Reformed churches. But it is more likely that she is a Roman Catholic who professes a special interest in preaching and spreading the faith. As to your friend, a priest may not marry a couple using the sacrament of marriage (which involves a mass). However, after the couple has gone through a civil ceremony, a priest may preside over a co-validation ceremony, after which the marriage is considered a Catholic marriage (for all practical purposes.) How much discretion the priest has in the matter depends a great deal on the local bishop. Your friend may have been in a diocese where they are somewhat rigid about these things, so a conversion-marriage sequence may have been simpler.

I sometimes wonder if these stories are real. I feel like if you show up to your son's wedding dressed in a white bridal dress, it's going to be much more embarrassing for you than it will be for the bride, because you're the one who's going to look like. a jerk.

I love these stories. Me and my in laws got along for the most part despite the fact that I was Italian and my husband Jewish and an Italian woman had caused my MIL marriage to break up. Lol 42 years later, we all love one another. We planned our whole *not* expensive wedding, I wore a nice dress but not a bridal gown, and our friends still talk about the wedding.

Not sure all evangelists are protestants either. Most TV evangelists are non denominational and if we are being honest isn't a protestant like a catholic-light. Now with 20 percent less guilt..

This emphasizes a problem in far too many weddings. The event is the first collaboration of the couple. It is beyond me why so often, relatives think it is to please them. I remember one wedding I helped with, the aunts and mother of the bride all ganged up to steer the planning. The groom, a calm young Marine Sergeant, said something he wanted for the wedding. His bride smiled instantly, and said that sounded nice, because he hadn't had a say yet (and she really wanted him involved). One of the aunts immediately blurted, "No, you can't DO that. You have to do it THIS way." The bride was shocked, and looked at her beloved with sadness, as the biddies all clucked their denigration. His face went neutral, and in his best schoolhouse voice, he said. "All right. Ok. Have it your way. DON'T let me and my wife plan our wedding. Run all you want to now. But after we say "I do," you DON'T. That's OUR time. This is the last 2 cents you give us."

You are an amazing and strong woman. I would have loved to see the purple dress just as much as I’d like to see the wedding pictures. I wouldn’t mind a recording of their faces, too. I’m sorry that happened to you but it sounded beautiful at the end. I don’t think you’d be happy in a traditional dress and I think the purple and black are better options from what I read. Epic boundary setting aside, this woman is an amazing writer! She should be writing novels in her spare time. I’d read them! This story was told beautifully!

Brilliant story. I just do not understand the mentality of people that try to upstage someone else's wedding. I mean, buying the same wedding dress as the bride? The nastiness is beyond comprehension

Good for you!!

I notice there are a lot of posts about women wearing white or wedding dresses to other people's weddings. Is this a thing? And what happened to Bored Panda? It used to be about individual people posting their art or stories about animals or other interesting stuff, but now it's all about entitled people getting their comeuppance. Still, it's strangely tantalizing to see people get even with a******s.

All weddings should be 'property' of the bride and groom. Family go along with their wishes because it's THEIR day, don't make it about you cos it ain't. Why do people who supposedly love their kids do this to them??

I loved this story of glorious comeuppance, but I cried for her husband. The mother wasn't just ruining the bride's day, after all. He was the one who wanted the wedding! She had to know that her actions would hurt him too! I'm so heartbroken for him, but SO GLAD that the two of them are so good together. How they support each other.

I’m a good wife and a good Mother and her not liking me didn’t matter. From that day forward we had a certain respect for one another.

Yeah, this didn't happen. She proved it by refusing to post any pictures. One group photo with everyone in their white dresses and all the faces blurred out would've done the job. Clearly its just some weird fan fiction she wrote about herself.

She also did mention that she knows the dangers of doxxing. Pictures can hold a surprising amount of metadata within them, one being location. There are tools you can use to strip photos of their metadata, but who would do that for strangers on the internet?
