Joel Kohnert, a lieutenant with the Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue (BSO), and his wife, Jennifer Kohnert, had reportedly been under investigation since February 11, prior to their arrest on March 31.

The investigation began after the 12-year-old, who had previously been homeschooled, was enrolled in a public school in Coral Springs.

School staff noticed signs that something was wrong, which led to a conversation between the girl and a school resource officer.

Shortly afterward, a Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigator arrived at the school and met with the officer. During this meeting, details of the alleged a**se by her adoptive parents came to light.

According to reports, the girl said she had been locked in her bedroom from the outside at night for years, allegedly to prevent her from wandering the house or taking items from other family members.

She was reportedly confined without access to a bathroom, forcing her to soil herself and later clean it using her own clothes.

The couple have six other children apart from the unidentified girl, some of whom are reportedly their biological children.

Following the school meeting, detectives from the Coral Springs Police Department conducted interviews and gathered physical evidence of child a**se in Joel and Jennifer’s home.

According to investigators, the girl was found wearing toddler-sized underwear when she was removed from the home.

Officers who entered her room reported a strong smell of urine and found yellow-stained clothing, which corroborated her account of being forced to clean waste with her own clothes.

Witness statements from the couple’s three biological children, who were interviewed, allegedly confirmed that the 12-year-old was the only child subjected to these conditions.

According to investigators and court documents from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was also reportedly forced to bathe outside in a swimsuit, regardless of the weather.

She was also allegedly subjected to physical punishment, including being made to repeatedly write out Bible verses and tread water in the family pool for up to 45 minutes.

“I DESPISE PEOPLE WHO GIVE CHRISTIANS, LIKE ME, A BAD NAME. THIS WASN’T RELIGION. This was CHILD A**SE,” fumed one netizen

These allegations led to the couple being charged with one count each of child a**se without great bodily harm.

Under Florida law, this charge is classified as a third-degree felony and is punishable by up to five years in state prison, up to five years of probation, and a fine of up to $5,000.

During their bond hearing on April 1, Joel and Jennifer’s attorney described them as “devout Christians” and suggested their beliefs may not align with everyone in the courtroom.

The attorney stated, “They are devout Christians, they are devoutly religious, their beliefs on various topics may not chime with people in this courtroom, or maybe they do.”

However, Broward Circuit Court Judge Corey Friedman firmly rejected the use of religion as a justification, stating, “I don’t get into the religious stuff. I stay away from that; I just have to apply the law.”

“But when you’ve allegedly got a 12-year-old child who is locked in a room for upwards of three years and is forced to urinate and defecate in the room, and then clean it up with her clothes, that is not a religious issue, that’s something else.”

The couple’s attorney argued, “That’s also not true, and these folks are innocent until proven guilty. That fact is not true.”

The judge responded, “True, I do understand she is innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations here are difficult, to say the least.”

All seven of Joel and Jennifer’s children have been removed from their home, and a custody and parental rights hearing has been scheduled

Following the hearing, the firefighter and his wife were reportedly released after posting a $100,000 bond, with strict orders to have no contact with any of their children, along with “no firearms, weapons, or ammunition.”

In a public statement by the Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, confirmed that Joel has been placed on leave without pay from his position.

All seven children have also been taken into custody by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for April 6, where the court will determine custody and parental rights for the children removed from the couple’s home.

“Poor little girl. She will be traumatized for life. I pray she gets the support and therapy she needs…” wrote one social media user
