Adidas Makes Sneakers From Ocean Trash And Illegal Fishing Nets Taken From Poachers
Adidas has partnered with a multidisciplinary creative environmentalism organization called Parley For The Oceans to create a concept sneaker made almost entirely out of plastic waste and discarded fishnets taken from the sea.
Fishnets are a significant source of ocean pollution, but at least part of the nets used to create these recycled fibers came from a more interesting source than simple sea trash; The Sea Shepherds, a sea-bound environmental activism organization, captured roughly 72km of illegal gillnets after tracking illegal poachers wanted by Interpol off the coast of West Africa for 110 days. When the poachers’ boat sank, the environmentalists saved them, too!
The shoes’ uppers will be created with recycled plastics and actual green net fibers, while the base will use other sustainable materials. Adidas has been accused by Greenpeace of environmental pollution in the past, so this will hopefully represent one of many steps in the right direction. The shoes may or may not be produced, but they vow to start using recycled fibers by early 2016.

Indeed, they need to be 100% transparent about this. I think they should employ the poachers and pay them a fair wage so they won't need to go poaching any more.

Sweatshops are bad but sometimes the people working there bring the only money for the family so the problem is not really the sweatshops but the fact that there are too many human beings and for all people to not be poor is not an option. The Earth can provide only a limited amount of resources so recycling is the more important issue here. Think about it 7 billion humans only 1 Earth.

That's just not true. Poverty exists because of imposed inequality. Multinational corporations can afford to pay their suppliers enough to give workers decent wages and safe working conditions. Greenwash :( Synthetic textiles and shoes are a source of harmful microplastic pollution and cannot be described as eco friendly or sustainable. Conservationists should be rejecting polluting synthetic textiles. Hemp is a much better choice of material for Adidas to employ in their shoes and clothing. #Eco #Fail #PlasticPollutes

This is just an ad. And each time I spot b******t like this I'm amazed that there's no laws to mark it as such. But mostly I'm sad that it's that easy to trick people into eating it up nowadays...and then passing it on. I've seen this s**t floating around the internet for a while now. You can smell the b******t from a nautical mile away. It's not an initiative, it's not a start, not a good intention, nada. garbage. And if you take the time to actually read the article it's just as obvious as all the actual trash which I'm sure you've noticed in the sea and on the beaches.

These few nets they have confiscated are just a tiny part of the problem. Watch " Plastic Paradise " on netflix. You will be horrified at what us humans are doing to our beautiful oceans. The illegal fishermen are not the only problem. Legal fishing boats will cut loose any old and damaged nets rather than disposing of them properly. Some of these nets are as big as football fields.They float in the ocean and trap and kill thousands of innocent marine animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles, otters, seals.Hundreds of thousands die getting caught in these nets. There needs to be a moratorium on fishing until our oceans have been replenished.

Watch Plastic Paradise on netflix. You will be horrified. Even legal fishermen just cut their old nets loose to float in the ocean , they kill whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles and any other marine animals that just happen to get caught up in one. It is easier then properly disposing of them. Some of the nets are as big as football fields. There needs to be a moratorium on fishing. We are fishing our oceans empty. Humans are a despicable species.

Good idea, but almost all sneakers are made up of man-made fibres. When these shoes are worn through we give them away or throw them away. This still creates a landfill / recycle problem.
