As I read this, I actually looked down to see what shirt I was wearing. Sigh!
As adults, we have a lot on our shoulders. There are bills to pay, deadlines to meet, and seemingly endless things to take care of. But remember when life was a little simpler?
When our biggest problem was getting a bad grade at school, and we could spend hours laughing with friends over the most ridiculous things? Somewhere along the way, many of us seem to have forgotten how to have fun without a care in the world.
The good news is that our playful side doesn’t have to disappear just because our age is now a two-digit number. In fact, one study involving more than 4,000 adults found that people who were more playful also tended to report being happier.
Interestingly, playfulness remained relatively stable across different age groups, suggesting that getting older doesn’t necessarily mean becoming more serious.
It might sound counterintuitive, but being a little silly could actually help you do better at work or school. A study involving 254 university students found that those who were more playful tended to get better exam grades.
They were also more likely to do extra reading beyond what was required to pass. Apparently, having a little fun doesn’t have to get in the way of getting things done!
Being playful could also be one of the secrets to a happy relationship. A study involving 211 couples found that people who enjoyed playful interactions with others or liked playing with words and ideas tended to report greater relationship satisfaction.
After all, having someone around who can make you laugh and share lighthearted jokes with you sounds pretty great!
Did somebody say "sin"? (just kidding, just kidding!) (Covers head with hands)
Speaking of humor, laughter can actually do wonders for our stress levels. In 2023, researchers reviewed eight studies involving 315 people to see how laughter affected cortisol.
They found that laughter-based activities were linked to an average 31.9% reduction in cortisol levels compared with control groups. Some of those activities were as simple as watching a funny video, which sounds like a pretty enjoyable way to unwind.
The benefits of a good laugh might go beyond helping us relax. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that laughing together can strengthen social bonds.
It seems that sharing a laugh helps people feel closer to one another, partly through the body’s natural endorphin system.
Perhaps that’s one reason why sending a funny meme to a friend or laughing over an old inside joke can feel so nice. You’re sharing a little moment of happiness with someone else.
Memes, in particular, might be a surprisingly good way to lift our spirits. A 2021 study involving 748 people found that participants who looked at memes reported more positive emotions than those who viewed other types of online content.
The researchers were studying how people coped during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that memes also helped participants feel more confident about handling the situation. And they only had to look at three memes to see these benefits!
So, the next time you find yourself laughing at a completely random meme, enjoy it without feeling guilty about wasting a few minutes. Life will always have its serious moments, and there will probably be plenty of things demanding your attention tomorrow.
In the meantime, there’s nothing wrong with letting your inner child have a little fun. After all, growing up shouldn’t mean forgetting how to laugh at something wonderfully silly.
Onety-one is actually close on how we say 11 in Estonian. We say "one-otherty" (üksteist) and it can also mean "eachother" (üksteist). I dont know why we do that, cant even blame the Germans for that one.
If you accidentally dial 911, or get disconnected in the midst of a 911 call, they will call you back. At least, they do here in Ontario. They have to be sure there isn't a real emergency. And yes, I have experienced this first-hand. Once, when my then-2-year-old discovered the direct 911 button on the landline phone in a Niagara Falls hotel room. And once when I got disconnected while trying to take a video of the guy who carefully stacked the yard waste bags (paper, holding dry leaves) that had been waiting for collection on the curb in front of my house, and then set them ablaze. He was gone before the fire department and police arrived.
I'm going to guess cocoa solids, modified milk ingredients, one or more forms of sugar in alarmingly large quantities, and an assortment of chemical colours, preservatives, and texture stabilizers.
Noooooo, Jake from State Farm has a hidden dark side behind those khakis
Santa is a coward! Jõuluvana (Yule elder) comes in while you are having Yule dinner, asks loudly if there are any good children present, demands a poem or a dance for each of your presents and then takes a shot of vodka with your parents.
