Or you can give a (honest) (non-)apology: "I'm sorry I made you feel that way." or "I'm sorry you feel that way." (angy, disappointed, ...) and play the responsibility and blame ball back - some people are masters in that

There is actually a whole show (that started as a random Facebook site) called Cat Canopy Rescue that shows two guys who rescue "trees cats" in the Seattle area...because of the shape of cats claws they can easily climb up when scared, curious or just being a cat and then cannot physically climb back down...check out the site it is actually very interesting...

I can relate: Jean de La Fontaine (french writer 1621-1695) used Esope's tales in his book of Fables. Esope was a servant in ancient greece that was so brilliant he corrected people's wrongs by telling them little stories with animals, because he could not tell them to their face, he was a servant and they would have punished him. My favourites are "Le corbeau et le renard" (flattery) and "Les animaux malades de la peste" (scapegoat).
