The Internet Proved To A Guy Disapproving Of Xbox’s New Rainbow Logo That He Won’t Find A Company Not Supporting LGBTQ+
It’s Pride Month, a time when many celebrate the LGBTQ+ movement—both its values and beliefs as well as its community, which stands for self-affirmation, dignity, and equality, among many other human rights.
However, it has become a rather controversial issue, creating a huge divide between tradition and freedom, or traditionalism and liberalism. So, it should come as no surprise that there’s always gonna be people who don’t agree when a company comes out in support of the LGBTQ+ community…
… like when Xbox announced its support, and then this one guy protested, and then everyone shut him down.

So, come June 1st, Xbox, among a number of other gaming (and beyond) companies, tweeted out their new LGBTQ+-themed logo in celebration of Pride Month.
The tweet was captioned “We believe everyone in the gaming community should have freedom to be themselves, both when you play and as you live,“ linking to a news article on their own website on the topic. Cause corporations.
But, as you might have guessed already, not everyone was pumped about the occasion. Namely one Twitter user responded with “Now I will buy a PlayStation.”
But someone wasn’t happy about it and came back with how they’ll switch to PlayStation now

Now, it’s not clear what the reason here was—was he joking, was he seriously trying to channel his inner bigot, or was it just his way of protesting against corporations riding the wave of Pride Month? Regardless, people took it seriously and started responding in the best way possible—the good kind of trolling.
The internet was having none of it and took the guy for a ride to show just how much his bigotry is not appreciated

So, Xbox points out its support for the LGBTQ+ community, and the guy switches to PlayStation. Another tweeter comes out with PlayStation’s tweet about how they carry the LGBTQ+ colors, the guy switches to the Nintendo Switch (ba-dum-ts!). The same tweeter points out Nintendo’s support for the LGBTQ+ community.
“PC then”—“Microsoft supports Pride, remember?” Linux? Bam! There’s a picture of an ArchLinux user who’s gay. At this point, the guy gives up, says he’ll stick to sports, but the internet isn’t having any of it and slaps him with a picture of theFootball Vs. Homophobia initiative.

The thread concluded with one of the tweeters saying that this was quite an adventure. And, honestly, it could have gone on and on beyond consoles, touching upon specific game developers, games, and franchises that delve deep into LGBTQ+ themes.
Don’t forget all of the popular faces in gaming, like LGBTQ+ streamers, gaming industry personalities, and gamers themselves! All in all, many connected to the industry are tolerant and supportive of the movement, so there certainly a lot of potential for this thread to expand appropriately.

Some have pointed out that due to the ambiguity of the situation, this might not have been a hate thing because it might have also been an issue of protesting against companies that use Pride Month as a means of marketing, and only care about the bottom line, not the people they oh so support here.
Those arguing the corporate position have said that they have multiple branches based in different countries, and not all of them fly the LGBTQ+ flag, especially in more traditional countries, exposing the hypocrisy of it all. Then again, the guy would have probably been more articulate in that case?

Regardless, the tweet went viral, not on Twitter, but rather as a repost on Imgur, where it gained just a bit over 4,000 likes with nearly 89,000 views.

I'm all for people calling out hate when they see it. We don't need to gatekeep that. It's literally the least people can do and they should do it. We can't know from those posts what level of engagement any of them had with the cause. I didn't see anyone in there patting themselves on the back as a true activist or anything. Are you suggesting that people should not call out hate unless they've paid sufficient dues in the cause?

As a queer person, while brands co-opting pride can seem pandering, it's super nice to see that businesses have decided that the majority is, at a minimum, OK with LGBT+... It's way more tangible than any news story or opinion poll.

I definitely agree. Hopefully once LGBTQ is more widely supported, brands will learn to be more tactful. But in the meantime, knowing that brands willingly associate themselves with the LGBTQ community is enough to make me smile at least a little because it means they don't actively despise us, lol

Almost everyone has a friend or relative who is homosexual. Some just aren't out to people they perceive as a threat. As we've seen repeatedly, the ones who are the nastiest opponents are often the most deeply closeted.

While I support LGBTQ rights, whoever designed that logo is a horrible designer. You can tell, not only from the way all the lines are crossing each other, but also because they chopped off the right crotch of the “x” so the corner is just flat black.

The thing that bothers me is when you look for example on the USA Instagram account of a major company they are so supportive of the LGBTQ+ but then go to Instagram account of the same company but then for Russia, turkey or Indonesia (to name just a few) they aren't celebrating pride month at all. Be inclusive company wide or shut your pie hole. It's only inclusivity if you spread the message worldwide. It's dirty marketing when only spreading the message in regions where pride is profitable for your company.

Why can't the gay and queer and others just go on being a regular human being without having to have the spotlight shined on them.. we're all human quit shoving the stuff down our throats. Only a short decade ago everyone didn't have to be so special.. and we all put up with each other. Way to create division.

Conclusion : Companies don't care about spending a few cents to add colors everywhere if it can give them a good image (except in homophobic countries, of course. Yeah Renault, that's you I'm talking about) and bring more money. If homophobia was trendy, they would take advantage of that too. The sentiment of the whole thing is cool but it honestly reads like a setup meant to generate traffic, exactly like the companies that visibly support the LGBTQ community for precisely one month each year. If the "OP" was as homophobic as this thread would like us to believe there's no way the final portion would be a simple "I give up" and there would have been the cursing version of wailing and gnashing of teeth going on throughout the thread.

"Companies/brands should, by default, be in support of everything and everyone." You're right, they should. But acceptance of the LGBTQ community is a very new & recent thing. One day the "We don't hate you!" message should hopefully be unnecessary as acceptance spreads, but at the moment homophobia & transphobia are so prevalent that companies distinguishing themselves as supportive isn't redundant.
