Tuesday 22 of January, 30 Norwegian women dressed as Handmaid’s, protested against Norways new christian conservative Governement. The new ministers was just leaving the Royal palace after their first meeting with the king and was met with a silent but powerful demonstration. The new government includes the conservatives and the Christian Right, a party that wants to remove women’s rights to abortion. They have succeeded in getting a restriction in Norways abortion law, for the first time in 40 years, and also secured a veto-power in all questions regarding reproductive health.

They want to deny single women IVF treatment, block a law that would make egg donations legal for infertile women and stop a new law that would give pregnant women access to first trimester ultrasounds. New Minister of Family Affairs, Kjell Ingolf Ropstad, from the Christian Right party stated that women expecting twins shouldn’t be able to have a choice to keep just one of them. His exact words were «if you are able to carry one baby, you are able to carry two».

30 women, all dressed in white bonnets and billowing red robes surprised the new ministers by entering the snow covered garden in front of the Palace at the same time as they came out to greet the press. The participants in the demonstration span a wide range of women, young and old, lawyers, actors, LGBT-activists, authors, nurses and include Norwegian comedienne Sigrid Bonde Tusvik and other women with a profound voice in Norwegian society. 📸Hanne Pernille Andersen
