Facebook Group Photoshops Plus-Sized Women To ‘Inspire’ Them To Lose Weight

Photoshop has become synonymous with “beautifying” photos that would otherwise have imperfections. In some cases, this is OK, and magazines and online media do some photo editing with a subject’s consent. Recently, however, a group going by the name of “Project Harpoon” (Facebook page presently shut down) has drawn criticism for photoshopping plus-size models to appear thinner. An offshoot of ThInnerBeauty, a website, and subreddit, the group aims to “inspire” its targets to lose weight.

“Here at ThInnerBeauty we provide people with visible, achievable healthy body goals,” says the page description on Reddit. “We do this by showing how much more beautiful they could look if they made the difficult, lifelong commitment to a regimen of personal fitness. This is a place where we can manipulate plus-size girls’ photos to highlight the difference between how they are and how they could be.”

The Reddit site appears to be slightly less prone to body shaming, as many of the photoshopped images are submitted by real users asking to be motivated.

F**k this. Look, I'm all for promoting a healthier lifestyle. But photo-shopping someone else's body without their consent is a d**k move. You aren't trying to "motivate" them to be healthier-- you are simply saying, we'd feel more comfortable with you if you looked like this. Further more, jesus effin christ, those photo-shopped images are so unrealistic-- NO woman alive is going to have that tiny waist and huge breast naturally-- especially not if they lose that much weight. Can we all just f**k off and stop telling other people what to do with their bodies?!

Exactly! Why would these women care what those photo-shoppers think? If they like how they look, than that's fine. In Fact I think that's all that matters

This is ridiculous. A lot of these girls aren't even big. You are just body shaming for the hell of it. They are all gorgeous even if they are over-weight, but that is their decision. You don't even know if they are exercising or eating a healthy diet now.. I hate when people assume things. Tess holiday goes to the gym contrary to popular belief. Stop "fat shaming" and fix whatever is going wrong in your life that urges you to judge someone else and try to hurt them.

You keep using that word "decision"... Do you realize that most overweight people, if they had the option to be skinny, they'd chose it in a hart beat. For most overweight people, it's not so much a choice, as it is a "curse". They lack the discipline and the motivation to actually do something about it, however, they most likely dream of being skinny. So no, I don't believe that there's anything wrong in motivating overweight people to lose weight. On the other hand, I do believe that it's morally wrong to tell people that they should stay the way they are, if it's clearly unhealthy. I'm not American, and I'm convinced that one of the reasons for the growing obesity rate in the US, is because it has become a standard, which isn't the case in the rest of the world. What's considered "normal" in the US, is considered fat/overweight in Europe. If you want to get rid of obesity, stop lowering your health standards, and don't tell overweight/obese people that they're beautiful.

@joshua mcdonald: Hope you have the pride to face your daughter one day when she's struggling with her own body image issues....ALL women go through it, and it's obvious she will have to lean more on her mother for rearing and support and not from some a*****e like you.

I think the point that everyone is missing is that we, as women, are in no way obligated to look a certain way for anyone. That's where the chutzpah comes in here, that this site (and the Sub Reddit site) seem to think that women need inspiration to "make a lifelong commitment" so that we can look pretty for the boys. And really, isn't that our ultimate life goal, ladies? Funny, I don't see any modified pictures of Kevin James or Jonah Hill.

That's certianly not my life goal to look pretty for any guy. If someone loves you only if you are pole thin and starve yourself, then that's not love, and who the fck wants a guy like that? I certainly don't.

That's usually a case. I heard an overweight pop star say he disapproved of overweight women and when the interviewer told him he was also overweight he said "I can be fat, I'm a man, a woman should be thin". A**hole.

It's funny how they think their boobs would still be large and full if they lost all of that weight.....any full-ized girl that has lost a ton of weight can tell you the boobs are always the first to go...

Not true, breast weight is hard to shed. I'm a healthy weight but my chest is huge. I can't say I agree with what the shoppers did but a lot of those girls need to lose weight for their own health.

How is this motivating anybody to be healthy? It's purely schoolboy fantasy photoshop work - funny how the breasts all seem to stay the same size or enlarge as the rest of the body reduces so far down to be unhealthy. Also the positioning of legs, waists and hips is fairly bizarre. A fun private project maybe, but not one to share and promote to sensible human beings - particularly on copyrighted images

I think the title of this article is misleading. It should be Facebook Group Photoshops Plus-Sized Women badly To ‘Inspire’ Them To Lose Weight and to body shame them. People need to face up to the fact that we are all different shapes and sizes we are not built from the same mold. If you don't like big women then don't look at us, don't talk to us, and don't Photoshop us! I sure as f**k don't Photoshop anorexic skinny bitches into holding a f*****g sandwich to "inspire" them to f*****g eat something. So why is it OK for them to "inspire" a big girl into doing anything?

Denise and Clementine look amazing as they are! Some women carry weight in all the right places. Doing this without someone's permission really is mean. If someone did this to me, I'd be mortified.
