23 Heartbreaking Photos Brought Together In A Book To End The Illegal Wildlife Trade
Photographers against wildlife crime - it’s the name of a recent project by an international group of award-winning photographers who decided to unite and use their powerful pictures to help bring an end to the illegal wildlife trade.
Wildlife crime is one of the world’s top criminal activities, ranked alongside drugs, arms, and human trafficking. These photographers aim to spread this important message in order to inform as many people as possible since some still aren’t aware of how big of a problem this actually is. “Most of the world doesn’t’ even know what’s going on with its own planet. It’s still solvable,” claims Brent Stirton, one of the photographers taking part in this project.
Initiators have three main goals during this project. First, the photos will be put together into one book and released in May 2018. Second, it will also be released in Mandarin for a distribution in China which could make a valuable contribution towards a constructive dialogue with consumers. And finally, with those books they hope to raise funds for charities whose mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes.

A member of an all female anti-poaching unit, set up in Zimbabwe. Every day, these women face the harsh reality of conservation at the front line, whilst being mothers.
A volunteer with the NGO, Care for Wild Africa, comforts a baby rhino after undergoing treatment for injuries caused by hyenas. The rhino was orphaned after its mother was killed by poachers. She was luckier than most as many calves who see their mothers killed are also attacked by the poachers, using machetes to break their spines so they cannot run away.
That poor baby! It sickens me when I hear about poachers and their methods of slaying an animal. I am just happy that precious lil baby has someone to finally show it some love and give it hugs.
A gorilla in the hands of her carer as they drive to a new and larger sanctuary run for the care of orphaned or captive apes rescued by Ape Action Africa in Cameroon.
So sad but i am so thankful for the people out there who are helping these beautiful animals, i hope she has a happy life now.
On April 30, 2016, Kenya staged its biggest ever ivory burn. Rangers burnt 105 tons at Nairobi National Park to stop poachers from selling it.
As a Kenyan, this was a good move. Our politicians are corrupt. If the government had decided to keep the Ivory, Within a year all ob display would have been fake. Still, we sus[ect that a few were Ivory and the rest were fake. You know politicians will always be politicians. Ivory trade has reduced since then. #savetheplanet.....ooh and you should all visit Kenya for its wildlife. You are missing out.
African Elephant Loxodonta, photographed at Abu Camp in Botswana. The mahout who has raised the orphan from SA has a trusted bond. The Elephants are raised to maturity and released as part of a long term study of rehabilitated animals.
I have a tattoo of a human hand holding a dog paw, i may follow it up with this one to represent all wild animals.
This orphaned baby gorilla on sale in a Cameroon bush meat market was traded by the photographer for a worthless ring and taken to a sanctuary at the other end of the country. It died a few months later.
Wrong on so many levels, look at the little thing dwarfed by the humans around it, so out of place, i'm glad it was rescued and spent its last few months being looked after, so sad the little one died though, RIP beautiful baby.
Thandi, the female white rhino who lost her horn to poachers, has become a symbol of survival in the fight against rhino poaching.
Tony Fitzjohn, conservationist, and protege of George Adamson, with Jipe, a lion he raised from orphaned cub to full adult in three years and then released back into the wild. Jipe successfully bred and raised cubs in Tsavo, Kenya, but was murdered by poachers soon after this photo was taken.
Fennec foxes are captured for the illegal pet trade. This three-month-old pup was for sale in a market in southern Tunisia.
Without the poverty, there would be less trade. I would do what I had to to feed my kids, and learn to live with a guilty conscience
Of course, there are those who are simply greedy, and exploiting the poverty that makes this horrible trade possible.
Load More Replies...Poor little thing, so wrong, i understand the need for the poor to try to do what they can do but this is only going to destroy the species and there won't be any left for the world to enjoy seeing in the wild and no more to be sold on the streets. The main concern of course should be the welfare of these beautiful foxes and we all know there is no easy solution to teh problem, this is a government issue and needs to be dealt with.
I CAN'T LOOK!!! THAT IS CRUELTY!!! AGH!!!! WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT TO POOR LITTLE FOXES
I feel sorry for both the animal and the person in the picture. He obviously don't have enough for a decent living.
The smouldering remains of an area of Amazon rainforest cleared for cattle ranching in Acre, Brazil.
A captive-bred Philippine eagle hand fed at The Philippine Eagle Center. Loss of habitat due to deforestation means these eagles are critically endangered. Some captive-bred birds have been released back into the wild.
A pair of young Bengal tigers in India's Ranthambhore National Park. Less than 4,000 tigers are left in the wild, a consequence of poaching to supply consumer demand for their body parts, mostly in China and Southeast Asia.
A large bull elephant in Nepal's Chitwan National Park sits with its leg chained. The 50 year old beast is restrained as it has killed five mahouts (handlers) in its lifetime.
It isn't just melting sea ice caused by climate change that threatens the future of the polar bear. This iconic species is threatened also by hunting. Every year hundreds of polar bear skins are shipped, both legally and illegally, out of Canada, most of them to the growing market in China. Earlier this month a court in Quebec found a local company guilty of illegally exporting three polar bear skins to China.
An aerial view of indigenous land in the region of Altamira in the Brazilian Amazon, cleared for illegal logging.
Approximately 4000 pangolins defrosting after their seizure, hidden inside a shipping container at a port in Sumatra. Pangolin scales are used in traditional Chinese medicine and their flesh is regarded as a delicacy.
A thresher shark caught in a gillnet in Mexico's Sea of Cortez. Tens of millions of sharks die each year as victims of fishing by-catch or to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup.
F****n disgusting, poor things slowly suffocate when this happens, something needs to be done sooner rather than later, this really is upsetting.
Like generations before her, the leatherback turtle moves steadily back to the ocean. Leatherbacks are the largest, deepest-diving and widest-ranging sea turtles. Much of their lives are spent at sea, shrouded in mystery. When mature, females return to the shores where they themselves hatched to lay their own eggs. Sandy Point national wildlife refuge on St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands, provides critical nesting habitat.
Wildlife or Commodity? Photographer is revealing the extent of the illegal wildlife trade through her moving photos of wildlife products confiscated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Britta's photos include this image of a polar bear rug, one of approximately 1.5 million illegal items held in a repository in Colorado. This image was also a finalist in the recent MontPhoto International Photography Contest in Spain.
At the Chimelong International Circus in China, this orangutan performs in costume three times a day, accompanied by a clown. Orangutans are critically endangered and babies traded for the pet trade or entertainment industry.
An absolute f****n disgrace, animals have no place in the f****n circus.
Endangered Ring-tailed lemurs at Whenzou Zoo, in Zhejiang, China. Today, conservationist believe this species numbers as few as 2000 individuals in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching and hunting.
Confiscated Rhino Hooves of two adults (male and female) and one calf. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stores 1.3 million seized items at a warehouse in Colorado.
China seems to have a serious problem when it comes to animal rights. Almost every f*cking single time a demoralizing story about animal cruelty comes up, China is somehow involved.
its a big market, but dont be fooled, the US is also a really big market for animals from the amazonian jungle (but mostly for cocaine...)
Load More Replies...This is just heartbreaking...humans are the only species in the planet that kill just for the f**k of it... racional my a*s :'(
Yeah we humans really know how to screw things up. Glad there are people saving and rehabilitating animals and fighting deforestation.
Load More Replies...If these pictures are in a book let's hope they publish it in Mandarin, too. Alongside with some research how pulverized rhino horn does nothing for your 'manhood'. But the West isn't much better, with people liking videos of 'tickled' slow lorises or dogs with seizures in hundreds of thousands and raging at everybody who tells them that this is not cute but torture.
I hope when we die we are judged by things we do to animals.... most people would burn for eternity.
Human beings are a vicious, stupid species. If there were only three of us left together on the planet, we'd still kill each other to be the one in 'power'. If there was only one potato left, a human would eat it instead of thinking long term and planting it. The last rhino will end up an ornament on a rich person's wall. We are hurtling towards our own destruction and taking all other life forms with us.
Don't "f**k" an entire country please - I'm Chinese and completely heartbroken and outraged by this. These posts are focused on China - but the demand is all over the world - even the US
Load More Replies...Of all the atrocities that are happening around, cruelty towards animals pains me the most. It started since the colonial times and before that, when the Mughals, the Rajputs and later the British pillaged Indian forests for the 'entertainments' and oriental affinities. Its high time people should wake up and stop this c**p. It 's high time the first worlds should give up on their Oriental believes of tiger skin, ivory and rhino horns and the s**t believe of exotic food and medicines. China is one of the largest market to sell these items along with reptile and snake venom and their largest client belongs to the west. Dudes, wake up, the tiger is not there for you to pose with in a zoo or to dance with the monkeys or to have an ivory bangle. Sometimes I think the poor cobra will die if it bits you and not the other way round.
I havent even looked at the pics, I literally CANNOT do it. When I do, I cry and have nightmares for days over it. If they assisted in ending ANY of the completely INHUMANE ways that animals are treated all over the world...I love it.
The wildlife trade´s EVIL, so many animal rights activists fight so hard to stop this, some locally, others online (like me and a lot of my FB friends), others by donating to sanctuaries etc., but it´s all about big money, and as long as there´s any request for wild animals - dead or alive - and as long as disgusting products like dustbins´re made of elephant feet or ash trays out of gorilla hands, and as long as bushmeat´s still requested nothing will ever change, I pledge to keep on being the voice of the voiceless as long and as far as I have ANY internet access, long before I got the internet in June of 2013 I already signed offline petitions against the seal clubbing by the Canadians in the later 80s, from 1989 on when I turned 18 and was allowed to sign, and against other kinds of animal abuse, but the internet makes it a lot easier, if only Facepoop didn´t put me and my friends into Facepoop jail again and again, we can hardly share the petitions or other calles for action (e-ma
Sorry, but half of my comment from Homer Blind WonderCat´s FB page´s been cut off, ehre´s the rest: (e-mail actions, tweetstorms etc.) in any group anymore now without being blocked completely!!! May God bless everyone who does his/her best to save the wild animals, pets, so-called livestock animals and also the environment..... 😭😭😭
Load More Replies...There is not rational explanation for this. And we are all part of this. We don't care about our food, we bring our kids into zoo's and circus's and we keep ignoring every aspect in beeing open minded. Even those pictures aren't new. Everyone knows about it in different stamping. And while writing or reading this we think about "whats for dinner today". The wolrd is mean because people are mean. To each other and to the earth as well... Now I am sad..(where is my chokolade?)
Because dogs are not wild animals...dogs were bred by humans, and the majority, like almost all dogs, could not survive in the wild. Now I know there are plenty of street dogs that do 'fine' but they are not wild, they're feral, and they're still surviving off of humans; our scraps, our trash, etc. Also, we have spent a very, very long time perfecting our abilities to properly care for cats and dogs, we have skilled and knowledgeable vets at every corner, we're aware (mostly) of how to properly care for, feed, clean, and interact with those animals. One of the biggest issues with exotic pets, is in most cases they're extremely malnourished, people get them because they're cute or cool and have no clue how to care for them. Now you could argue that people do that with cats and dogs all the time but where exactly is your local exotic pet pound that can give the animal a second chance? I agree with most of your points and def see where you're coming from though, not arguing!
