Some street photographers chase the spectacular. On the other hand, Los Angeles-based photographer Jeremy Paige turns everyday life around the city into photographs that are funny, strange, carefully composed, and sometimes a bit uncomfortable. When he isn’t working on feature films, Paige takes to the streets with his camera, paying close attention to the kinds of details most people would walk straight past. Sometimes it is a perfectly timed overlap between a passerby and an advertisement. Other times, it is the way a person, vehicle, shadow, or splash of color briefly falls into exactly the right place within the frame.

That awareness of his surroundings plays a major role in the work. Paige seems equally comfortable waiting for all the pieces of a composition to line up and reacting instantly when something unexpected unfolds in front of him. His photographs can be playful and visually satisfying, but they are not limited to the polished version of Los Angeles often presented on screen. He also gets close to the city’s rougher, less glamorous corners and the people who inhabit them, even when the encounter feels awkward, intense, or slightly uncomfortable. Still, Paige isn't particularly interested in explaining every photograph to the viewer. There is no beginning to explain how the characters arrived there and no ending to reveal what happens next. Instead, we get one carefully chosen frame and are left to imagine the rest.

I am always uncomfortable the way some people treat goldfish. I would love to have them trade places sometime.
