I’ll be completely upfront with you Pandas—one of my favorite parts about living on Planet Earth and being a human being (instead of, for example, a chill banana tree or a rat who can cook French cuisine) is the vast amount of new, creative, and interesting things I get to learn about each and every day. Life’s full of magic, even if it’s not as flashy and obvious as in the Harry Potter books and movies. And one of the cozy nooks on the internet that shows us just how neat the world can be is the ‘Mildly Interesting’ subreddit.

Rapidly closing in on the 19-million-member mark like a marathon runner in sight of the finish line, r/MildlyInteresting is a completely community-driven online group where people post photos of the things that interest them. Mildly, of course. And despite the name of the group, plenty of these photos are actually vastly and deeply interesting.

Redditor RedSquaree, who has been moderating submissions for r/mildlyinteresting for almost a decade now, went into detail with Bored Panda about how the type of content posted changes with the seasons and how much the subreddit has influenced people in real life. You'll find what they have to say below, so be sure to read on, dear Pandas.

While you’re checking out some of r/mildlyinteresting’s newest photos and upvoting the ones that made you smile, I’ll just quickly remind you that we’ve got some more of their amazing pics in Bored Panda’s earlier articles about the community here, here, and here. Happy scrolling!

I could be wrong. It totally could be glass. I just don't understand why someone would put forth the effort of stained glass if light can't get through it. Am I missing something?

Retired Art teacher here. It is a ceramic tile mosaic. A stain glass piece would get broken very quickly and the pieces would be transparent. These are opaque. Both are created with special nip tools to break the glass or tile into smaller geometric pieces. Or you can put a whole tile in a towel and wack it with a hammer. Same basic technique for glass or tile. But the difference is that thin set mortar goes underneath and then grout between the pieces once they are in place. If you put ceramic tile mosaic art in a search engine then click images and you will see a lot of great designs. If you put in ceramic tile mosaic instructions you can pull up how to make them. I'm sure YouTube has tutorials.

"Yes, the seasons affect the type of content we get," moderator RedSquaree told me when I enquired about this.

"This leads to content which is extremely common, particularly during the winter. Take frost on cars, for example. We get this kind of photo daily during winter months, and often we mark with an 'Overdone' flair because the people who hang about /r/mildlyinteresting will see these time and time again (whereas more casual readers probably still enjoy seeing them). Another common one is the pattern of ice or frost on the wheel, seen here," the mod gave Bored Panda a couple of examples of how the particular season, in this case, winter, affects what redditors are more likely to post.

Of course, holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving also influence what people tend to focus on. "We see posts about eggs, gifts, people receiving the same card from multiple people... and I'd bet, in the latter example, at least one person has lied about this and purchased two cards of the same type and posted a photo just for karma! Stranger things have happened," RedSquaree said.

Still don't pay our UK farmers enough however - the supermarkets are terrible at putting pressure on farmers to accept less and less. They have unrealistic expectations of the perfect veg, meaning a lot of veg is wasted for not meeting these standards and they often cancel contracts with farmers without any explanation, knowing the farmers cannot afford the legal team to fight it.

All major UK supermarkets show where it's produced fruit/veg/meat/fish. Beef has the number of the individual cattle on it ( I think- don't quote me on that). Reassuring the consumer - doesn't mean the producer gets a great deal. Even milk tells you where's it's from. Being from the UK. I like this but I also support farmers best I can.

The moderator shared that one thing that they find interesting is that some people actually think about the subreddit when they spot something interesting and go to take out their phones to take a photo. That just goes to show how much influence the 'Mildly Interesting' community has on the collective psyche.

"Being an original content-only subreddit—and quite a niche one at that—causes those chain of events which I find fascinating. If our (not-so, these days) wee subreddit changes someone's behavior in real life—to find something nice where others might let it pass them by without a second thought—that's a great thing. Maybe the sub does inspire some people to appreciate the smaller things in life."

According to the moderator, if we want to keep our sense of curiosity burning bright as we grow older, we ought to expose ourselves "to more novelty and ambiguity" in our day-to-day lives. Seeing or experiencing something fresh and unexpected brings you out of your routine and provides you with a different perspective in life. Hopefully, one that inspires you to dig deeper and learn something new.

"Much of our content is novel and/or ambiguous. Go about your day tomorrow and think, 'If I were to submit a photograph to /r/mildlyinteresting, what would it be?' Be on the lookout for things that are just novel and ambiguous enough to arouse only mild interest. Snap."

It's generally regarded that the proper length of the hoof on cattle should be 3" (from the hairline to the tip of the hoof), so if you divided 3" by 12, you'd get 1/4". So an "inch of a bulls foot" would be .25"

I got sent to the principal's office once, and only once, when I was in primary school - for running on the concrete, with some friends who got in s**t more often. I was so intimidated that I didn't ask to use the toilet. I stood there, needing to go, waiting, waiting, too scared to ask or say anything, and eventually couldn't hold it in anymore. Should we have pants dispensaries in every school, too, in order to prevent embarrassment and forward thinking?

This "thing" which happens to half the world, this "event" that occurs for every female and why is this recognition just happening??? God we are such duds........yell it from the rooftop, scribble it on every bathroom wall, and maybe someday it won't be an "event" but so darned normal that every male will know what it's about and we won't be traumatized by it's occurrence!!

Share The Dignity is a wonderful charity. They also provide period packs to homeless shelters and hand them out in known homeless congregation areas. Not only does this help to ensure as few women as possible are left without menstruation products, but it also means those women aren't risking criminal charges and the humiliation of arrest due to the need to steal these items from supermarkets and convenience stores.

This is brilliant. It's not just my age. Even younger folks are complaining that the print is getting smaller and smaller. As long as they have it printed on the container, whatever that may be, I dont think there is a policy that says you have to be able to read it. Any company that does this says to me they don't really want you to know.

The moderator divulged that we can’t always predict what posts will become very popular on the subreddit. “A lot of it has to do with luck. Maybe you come across something interesting in your day-to-day life and remember to take a picture, maybe you're just lucky enough that something is interesting to the community. No real rhyme or reason aside from that," the moderator said that it’s not an exact science.

Which, in a way, is actually inspirational and chill: that means that you can focus on sharing pictures of what you love and what you find interesting instead of vying for karma on Reddit.

LEGO bricks were first introduced in 1949, then also with windows and doors, they were named LEGO System in 1955 and the tube feature was patented in 1958. The same year sloped bricks were introduced. Right from the start, though, LEGO bricks came in white, red, yellow, grey, blue and green.

Considering the year, this can't be that other movie with the same title, known for its creepy scenes (it's from 1985).

Most of the red phone boxes in the UK have already been repurposed, from everything to mini library's to restaurants. The remaining one are available to purchase and are half price if you take them away.

Most the ones around me have been repurposed to house defibrillators, although I saw one a couple of days ago which was a tourist information booth with leaflets and a map on the wall inside.

There are two of these iconic phone boxes still in use in the UK that are Grade II Listing Buildings which means that 'every effort must be made to preserve them'. Just thought you might like to know.

I think they should be different colors to aliviate confusion from a distance. Red for heart defib, green for cash, etc... Would be a shame if someone ran down a block or two for a defib., and found an atm, or something.

In the movie, Dobby rescued Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, and Griphook from being tortured and killed by the Death Eaters, but was struck by a knife thrown by Beatrix LeStrange as they disappeared. They ported onto that beach, where Dobby, a Free Elf, died in Harry Potters arms. Dobby is one of the most important characters in the Harry Potter movies.

On the other hand, even though i do have some of my great-grandpa's clothes from the 1900s, there's no way I would ever fit into them because he was 1.55m tall, while I'm 1.80... That's what better nutrition does to people.

All those words sitting patiently on those pages, through global conflicts, watching Kings, Queens, Presidents, Dictators and Despots rise and fall, as man travelled off this planet and saw the furthest corners of the universe, and then created technology to bring a universe worth of knowledge into the palm of every person. Sitting patiently on those pages waiting for the day when someone would open the cover and absorb those words into their minds, their job simultaneously completed and only having just begun.

Looks cool! My husband has dark brown hair with a blond patch in pretty much the same spot like this boy. He started out as a blond kid and not all of his hair grew dark (some of his hair refused to grow up apparently 😜). A black haired coworker had a naturally white streak of hair starting in her eyebrow and continuing in her hair, that looked absolutely amazing.

Why would the Tahoe beaches have magnetic or iron-filled sand? The sand on the beaches seems to be broken-up granite, all of the surrounding mountains are made of the same pale gray granite rock! Where would iron come from?

    AlmightyOne

Granite is often made up of a ton of different quartzes, ores, and minerals (hence its speckled look) so the granite in those mountains might contain iron ore in them.

OJ Simpson, a famous ex-football player, went on a lengthy car chase before he was arrested for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. He was in a white Bronco, hence the license plate. The glove not fitting was a stunt the defense attorneys pulled in court to prove the leather gloves found at the scene didnt belong to OJ because they didnt fit him. They went so far as to have him try to put them on in court to demonstrate that. Hence the famous statement by one of his lawyers, Johnnie Cochran " If it doesn't fit you must aquit."

Important packing tip - keep a separate box containing a kettle, mugs, a roll of toilet paper, a small towel, some dish soap, tea bags (or a jar of instant coffee if that's your preference) and some unopened UHT milk (the kind that doesn't need refrigeration before opening). This is the LAST box you seal (and should go in YOUR car, not the moving truck), and the FIRST box you open. Moving is stressful and always takes longer than you think, but this box should contain the essentials to make things a bit smoother. Oh, and if you're familiar enough with the area, a takeaway menu - you'll not want to cook on your first night, even if you CAN find a saucepan!

Well, they're bricks. They keep for quite a while. I mean, just look at the Ishtar Gate from Babylon. Built roundabout the 7 century BC, it still looks seriously good. Of course, it's now in Berlin, because, you know, early 20th century archeologists had the tendency to just bring stuff home...

It's a technique called diapering. Became very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. When bricks are fired they are stacked in rows with the end of each row facing a central fire tunnel. So the sides of most bricks are fired fully and remain red, but the ends of the bricks which come into direct contact with air are oxidised and blackened. Bricklayers realised they could use this effect to make patterns in walls. You see all sorts of zigzags and chequerboards on old buildings in the UK.

Yeah, the Satanists do a lot of stuff like that. And for those who don't know, mostly their doctrine is atheistic (not Atheistic, there's a difference) but focused more on the fact that the majority of Christian sects are hypocritical and repressive. They seek to do the opposite, not literally worshipping Satan.

The Satanic Temple is an organization that mostly exists as a counter to overly-Christian public policies. They step in when people attempt to involve religion in public funds. For instance, if a church petitioned to place a religious statue in a public park, the Satanic Temple would file an identical petition to place a statue of Baphomet. Likewise, when churches find a way to distribute materials to public schools, they do the same. They have after-school clubs and do charity work. They don't actually worship the devil. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/after-school-satan

A bit of an overreaction from Reddit there. He's got none of the identifiers for Marfan, he's too short, he's not abnormally skinny and his fingers aren't overly long. All he has are disproportionately long arms which aren't as uncommon as you may think seeing as Alexandra and I here in a comments both have it too.

Somewhat related, plasterers also all get a 'wingspan' significantly larger than their height; the rest of us fit the 'Vitruvian Man' proportions. Maybe he can enlarge his by becoming a plasterer --- he'd be a super(stucco)spreader.

My mom invented a game to play with a bag of M&Ms. You take out 5 and place in your palm, you pull out another and if the color matches any in your palm, you eat the pair. If it doesn't match it's added to the ones in your palm. Keep going until the bag is gone. You only win if you finish the bag and ones in your palm at the same time. You lose if you run out of M&Ms in the bag before pairing off all of the ones in your palm or if you pair off all the ones in your palm before the bag is done.
