Our shortcomings don't define us. It's how we react to them that shapes us both in our own and other people's eyes. However, as we can see from the subreddit 'Mildly Infuriating', not everyone is willing to understand or capable of understanding that.

As you might remember from our earlier publications such as this one, this online community with 4.4 million members has plenty of content to send your blood into a simmer in a matter of seconds, but there's a special category of it that we at Bored Panda think deserves an article of its own—folks who don't accept they're in the wrong.

Whether it's someone trying to scam another person off a few bucks or just embracing their fragile ego, continue scrolling to check out the characters who earned themselves the label of 'mildly infuriating'.

To learn more about how to stay off such lists and what to do in order to stay grounded, we contacted Dr. Mike Brooks, a licensed psychologist based in Austin, Texas as well as F. Diane Barth, LCSW, who is a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City.

"A purpose in life is to learn, grow, and improve. We cannot do this unless we first recognize and admit our mistakes," Dr. Brooks, the author of 'Tech Generation: Raising Balanced Kids in a Hyper-Connected World,' told Bored Panda.

"We must remind ourselves that to 'err is human,' and we are fulfilling a purpose in life every time we admit our mistakes. Thus, from this perspective, mistakes are opportunities for growth that allow us to fulfill life's purpose. Moreover, a natural byproduct of growth and improvement is greater levels of happiness."

Dr. Brooks said that refusing to recognize and admit our mistakes when we are wrong hinders our growth and drowns us in disharmony. "This also increases the chances that we, and others, will suffer because when we don't learn from our mistakes, we are more likely to repeat them."

"When we don't admit when we are wrong, we create rifts in our relationships, which are the very source of our own happiness. In essence, we shoot ourselves in the foot," the psychologist explained.

"When it comes to relationships, in particular, it is better to be effective than to be right."

SnooShortcuts3641 Report

Diane Barth agrees that not acknowledging your mistakes can damage your relationships. "Over the years in my work as a psychotherapist, I've almost never seen a relationship destroyed because someone made a mistake," the author of I Know How You Feel: The Joy and Heartbreak of Friendship in Women's Lives said. "But I've seen many destroyed when someone who made a mistake refused to admit it."

Moreover, if people stop trusting you, you put not only your personal relationships in jeopardy but other aspects of life, such as work, as well.

Some people, however, seem completely incapable of admitting their mistakes. For example, Dr. Brooks highlighted that wars have taken millions of lives, yet those in power still haven't admitted they could've changed course and prevented it.

"People have trouble admitting they are wrong for many reasons but one of the main ones has to do with ego and attachment. When we attach our sense of self to a mental position and take the stance, 'I am right', it becomes part of our identity, part of our ego."

"'I am right' is almost like saying, 'I am Mike' or whatever your name is. Now, my ego, or sense of self, has become attached to a mental position. A primitive 'fight/flight/freeze' survival mechanism kicks in to defend my 'rightness' as if I were defending my very life. It's like a little part of me will die if I were to admit that I am wrong," the psychologist said.

i believe people should still be taught about slavery and s**t that existed. but i also believe not everything should be a racial subject, like it is now days. mind you, i am Mexican and have experienced my share of idiots, racism still exist's but not in the masses like people make it out to be. Not everything has to be a racial subject and people need to stop pulling the race card in general.

If slavery was the only thing they studied in history, I'd be concerned. They should also be studying the history of Native Americans, the genocide of the Native American tribes, Indenture of Chinese immigrants, internment of Japanese-American citizens during WWII, etc.

In the us we learned up to the civil war. Covered slavery but no current stuff. I was educated in Florida in 80s and 90s. Southern education s*cks but I was in an area with lots of POC so we had no problem discussing slavery and what was done to the indigenous people of this country. But we didn't really cover anything WW1 or later. One teacher said Vietnam was too contentious and they weren't allowed to discuss it. I'm mostly self taught about history.

Well, this is a timely post. A group of educators in Texas approached the board of education with a proposal. When teaching about slavery, they are proposing to call it "forced relocation". Yeah, you heard that right. If Texas does ever manage to secede from the union, they could re-name their new country "Dumbfuckistan".

This is the ish that makes me mad about these people. You wanna know what age O started learning about slavery and racism, around 5 years old, that was the first time I got called a burnt piece of toast and had no idea what they meant, so when I asked my grandmother that's when I got the "talk." The "talk" is something that EVERY black kid gets and it usually starts around 5 years old (there's a really great hashtag on Twitter that basically had all black people share the first time they experienced racism and darn near all of us experienced a lot sooner than 3rd grade and our parents and grandparents had the wonderful pleasure (that's sarcasm) of explaining to us that from that point forward that's what we would have to deal with and why and everything else). So if black kids can learn as early as 5 years old, I'm pretty darn sure it's fine for all the other kids to learn it from 3rd grade on up.

If your country has a long history of slavery, you will study a lot of slavery in History lessons. My country had some serfdom in the early centuries, but it was abolished in 1335. On the other hand, my country has been in a lot of wars, from around 800 to 1800, so we studied A LOT about wars in History.

As someone who lives in a country with a history that includes a civil war with pow camps and massacres and being forced to ally with Hitler later, I'd say, teaching history of your country to kids, warts and all, is the way to go. After all those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. (Unless that's their goal... 🕵🏽)

Whilst I am very sympathetic towards the sentiment of this post . . . . . and wholly supportive of in depth teaching of this subject . . . . . there's another part of me that despairs of curricula nowadays (not with regards to this subject but in general). Subjects tend to be taught in too much detail and too specifically and, I think, it is just for the sake of passing examinations and not for the sake of learning. Personally I think school tables are the problem - I appreciate that government and parents want to have a way to quantify education but I'm not sure the current solution is the answer. Take, for example, WWII - this is a VAST subject and there's really no point in studying one little aspect of it. There's so, so many connections to other subjects (WWI, European politics, the Cold War, the depression, Republican/Democratic interaction, isolationism, American and British and Italian and French fascism, the EU) . . . . what I'm saying is we need to teach more broadly.

In one study, students who scored higher on "metacognitive awareness" (the ability to reflect on personal thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and beliefs) made more effective decisions when it came to playing a computer game in which they had to diagnose and treat virtual patients. The authors of the research argued that this was because they could set more well-defined goals and take strategic actions.
