Woman Gets Petty Revenge When SIL Loses Her House And She Can Offer Her The Same Rigid Terms She Got When Her Own House Burnt To The Ground

Double standards are a wonderful invention of the human mind, which allow people to justify their unsightly actions towards other people. Due to double standards, a person may believe that they are entitled and when others act exactly the same way towards them, this very person becomes upset and offended.

At the same time, karma is such a special thing that almost always, if you do something bad to others, it will definitely backfire. And sometimes it turns out that it backfires from the same people whom you once offended.

For example, as it happened with the sister-in-law of this Redditor, whose post in the AITA community has already gained about 27.4K upvotes and more than 1.7K comments in just two days. People talk so much about karma, the psychological “boomerang principle” and the cost of rent – and here’s how they came together.

The Original Poster’s house once burnt to the ground after being struck by lightning

Image source: JULIE (not the actual photo)

The Original Poster herself is sure that she is being petty; however, she could not afford to do otherwise towards her own SIL. The fact is that two years ago, the house where OP lived with her husband and three children burned down from a lightning strike.

Good thing the kids were at school and the couple was at work. Too bad it took almost 11 months for the insurance to pay out, and it covered 1 month worth of hotel stays, after which the family had to look for a new dwelling.

The family had only one option – to move into her sister-in-law’s house

So the only option was to move into her SIL’s house. The owner provided her relatives with one of the rooms and an office space, demanding a fee of $100 per week for this. Three weeks later, however, the conditions changed – now OP and her family had to settle for only one room and pay $250 a week. Is it worth saying that the relatives had to buy food for themselves?

Two adults and three children now had to huddle in just one small room

The room in which the five members of the OP’s family had to huddle was so small that even a twin bed could not fit in there – so they all slept on the floor, and clothes were simply taken out of their bags. In addition, even though the SIL claimed the OP’s children on her food stamps, she herself did not pay anything, except for land tax, electricity and heating (and that is not a fact, as the OP notes). In the author’s own words, these were the worst eight months of her life.

Recently, the OP’s grandma transferred the deed of her 5-bedroom country house to her

But then, three months ago, OP’s grandmother decided to go into assisted living after an unfortunate fall and formalized ownership of her five-bedroom country house to her granddaughter. The OP’s sons decided to share a room, so after the move, two more bedrooms remained free.

The SIL lost her house due to due to not paying her land tax for several years and asked the OP for help

However, the most interesting part unfolded later. The SIL and her stepdaughter lost their house due to not regularly paying land tax – and now they had to turn for help, and guess who? That’s right – to the OP!

No problem, the OP said – $800 a month and one of the spare bedrooms is yours! Oh yeah, and they’ll have to buy their own food, because her daughter is vegan. The SIL was indignant and said that she was not going to share a room with anybody when another bedroom stayed free, $800 a month is an unbearable amount for her, and in general, the OP is acting in a really inappropriate way.

Image source: Ivy Dawned (not the actual photo)

People online decided the OP was not to blame for anything, though she was being petty and childish

So the SIL decided to leave and most of the relatives accused the OP of being petty and childish. It turns out, most commenters on Reddit, on the contrary, believe that the OP did everything right, and her sister-in-law’s behavior was ugly. Someone admitted that at the beginning of the post, they were ready to blame the OP, but after reading the whole post, they were convinced she was not to blame for anything.

Some people agree that the OP is being petty and childish as hell, but her behavior is completely justified. Classic double standards from the SIL’s side, as people notice. And yes, the very best comment was as follows – I love the smell of karma in the morning!

Yes, it's petty. And yes, it's deserved. Like a couple of commenters pointed out the OP couldn't control why they needed housing. The SIL could, and choose not to.

Yeah, and Op and Family lost far more than a house in an unpreventable way, while SIL lost ONLY a house, totally preventable, because of greed. I think the scales of justice thunk down right quickly for OP.

I also cannot believe people are so stupid that they decide or forget to pay property taxes long enough to lose their houses. I've only know of one person that has come close to that and they were going through a divorce and his ex was getting bills at her new address and throwing them away without saying anything. Just boggles my mind.

I know a family that lost their house that way. They whined and complained about how unfair it was before talking about how they could just move into one of my family's properties because we owned rentals. They just assumed we would let them stay there. They never actually asked. If they couldn't be bothered to pay house taxes, there's no way they were going to pay rent, and we needed the rent money to pay bills. We weren't kicking out a good paying tenant for some people we knew weren't going to pay. On top of that, they're hardcore conservatives that think the government needs to stop all the "handouts." The hypocrisy was physically painful.

Nta but don’t let this woman move into your house for any price . She will never pay you and she will never leave. Tell anyone who gives you a hard time that sil can move in with them and they can treat her like a queen. You owe her nothing more than you owe any previous landlord.

SIL put herself in her situation through her own stupidity and had to know it was coming. Which means she had time to figure out an alternate housing situation. OP lost their home through an act of nature and had literally nothing and no time to plan. There's a MASSIVE difference in those two situations. OP is petty AF, but most definitely NTA.

If I could ask OP one thing, it would be this. Considering the horrible way SIL treated you and your family, combined with the fact that she doesn't pay her taxes... what other crimes beside food stamp fraud was she planning to commit while living under your roof? SIL can kick rocks.

Claiming additional dependents to increase her monthly SNAP amount without sharing food with her own nephews, from whom she literally benefitted is not only reflective of her deplorable and heartless character but frankly unacceptable. If I were the OP I would secretly report my SIL’s practice of lying to DHS/DFS for lying and illegally claiming more dependents than what she has

Nope. She distinctly lost her home because she didnt pay the taxes on it, even though by your staying there, she had plenty of money to do so and even pay ahead. She then broke the law claiming your children as dependents to get more food stamps. All of this is her own fault and she should have learned early on to do unto others...because that is exactly what has happened here. This is what she put out to the world, this is what the world handed back to her. Nothing but karma

NTA. Unlike your situation, hers is 100% due to her own negligence and irresponsibility. Sounds like you paid her for a decade worth of land taxes and she blew it frivolously and claimed food stamps (welfare fraud) on top of that it. Distance her from you and your children. She did not treat you as family, why should the relationship change now when it is convenient for her? Users gonna use. Remove them from your life.

I once let a friend live with me for FREE for two months because she wanted to move to my amazing city. Years later, I wanted to move to her new city, and she charged me $800 to rent her room for 3 weeks. I should have broken the friendship then but I stayed in it for years until, after more back-stabbing, I finally realized what a POS she was.

Ok I have to play devil's advocate. The poster is a family of 5. The sister in law basically charged $50 per person per week. 5 people using the shower or bath every day, toilet, laundry, stove oven and all the electricity, basically more lights, tv and computer running at all hours when the SIL might not have used any of that a third or less of the time. SIL then expected a $50 per head rate in return. In her mind, right or wrong she was being charged double on utility and services bills that were only being increased by the power of 2 not 5. Wear and tear on all the household stuff also at entirely different levels. I really don't have the full story here, just one side. Can't judge who the AH is based on the little available but I just added some food for thought.

$50/head/week might be understandable, if harsh, if they had space and didn't have to also buy bare necessities. But not when cramming 2 adults & 3 kids who literally have nothing into a single tiny space.

I wouldn't want a tax cheat, on top of someone who has no problem defrauding SNAP, anywhere near my property. Especially one that ripped me off before. Family is family, but trash is trash.

Perfect example of reaping what you sow....and I love when family is like you're being petty...it didn't seem like they helped back then and instead of judging why aren't they helping now...Girl be as petty as you want! Hell if it was me I wouldn't even have made an offer...would have laughed and shut the door...or offered the shed

Why are they still even talking to any of those people? SIL and anyone who'd actually support her position would be dead to me.

HOW DARE YOU NOT TREAT ME BETTER THAN I TREATED YOU?!?! Even though OP's stipulations are literally better than SIL did. F**k people like that.

NTA. I wouldn't even call what she did, petty! She simply made an offer using her SIL's own standards. Not only that, but she actually even charged less. How is that petty?

Since she decided to "leave it", she obviously had options available to her... something you did not in your time of need. So, no, not the a**hole.

Petty? Sure. But why the hell not. It's not often you get to serve some much deserved comeuppance for kicking you when you're down.

Nope, not petty. If it were free, that woman and her step daughter would have moved in and never left! The SIL did the right thing!

Congratulations, you just lowered yourself to her level. No need to give in to her demands (like she had à right to make any!) but you had a chance to be the better person... And didn't.

A little childish but i would do the same. Maybe if i'm really in a very good mood i would use the situation to show my sil how it's done right, like family has to help each other. But i understand that those lessons are most overlooked or the other person is too self entitled to notice.

I love this one! Every family has at least one of these people. It is all about them. Usually, you can never get your reputation back with the family, even after their guile has been revealed. I would not worry about this SIL, just make sure she does not steal you blind while she is there.

Vengeful, yes, but NTA. If you are not a Christian, there is no reason why you should be forgiving. I'm not sure I'd have let her stay at all. (Also not sure why you stayed in that one room for 1000/month for 8 months isntead of moving to an appartemtn or a trail. i'm guessing you were strung along by the insurance?)

Nope, NTA...OP & her family were treated quite poorly by the SIL when they genuinely needed help. P**s poor IMO. I would've given the stepdaughter a spare room. SIL...perhaps a cot in the garage?

I’m glad it all worked out but I wonder why OP didn’t move in with her Grandfather in the first place instead of her SIL as he had a 5 bedroom house.

Petty? Vindictive? I'd say that, yes, she is a giant a*****e - just own it - but the SIL totally had it coming.
