Graffiti can be beautiful or ugly, but when it comes to tagging - most people would probably agree that it's the most hideous type of street art. And what's even more annoying - it's almost always illegible.
Mathieu Tremblin is a French artist who decided to fix this. He paints over the ugly graffiti and makes them legible.
What do you think about this idea?

Before it look like just a dirty wall....and couldn't focus on anything ....now you can find something
Will been better if he just erase it
I think the do it just to piss off the "artists" who did it. If they just erase it, next day it would be there again.
I agree. It's not right to cover another persons art, just to display your own. If you want to fix it, then repaint it - otherwise it shows how ignorant and self centered this person is.
I live in the city. If you repaint it then they will just come back and tag again. I know I was apart of an art Gruip that was making paintings for a building at the local park that kept getting tagged. They kept trying to pain over it. They got tired of it and it was to costly. Now that the art is up nobody touches it.
I would've loved the idea Alora Campbell tells about a lot more. I don't like what this guy did at all...
It's not art.
I think the owners of a property have the right to do whatever they want with their walls (as long as it's legal). I'm willing to bet the taggers were just young kids trying to be cool by tagging without permission and not getting caught; their tags showed no artistic skill beyond holding a spray can. On the other hand, based on the fact that they let themselves be photographed, I'm sure that the artists here do have the permission of the property owners to use their walls and create art installations that parody street tags. My point? Even if you think street tags are art, it's not right to display them on another person's property without permission. The owners have the right to do whatever they want over that illegal "art", including covering it up with blank paint, murals, or artwork that makes fun of them.

My original comment was deleted or not approved. I hope this one is, I guess here I have to play 'nice' to get my voice out. I have consistently agreed with Yvonne on this experiment. Mathieu clearly does not understand the expressionism and voice of a graffiti artist to replace their words/symbols/(dare I say art) with his own. It's clear form a white perspective that he would not deem other forms of lettering as acceptable, readable, or beautiful. So, he replaces it with his own to create order in the language. It must be written in the Greek system, it must be a modern typeface designed by a white designer (these are German typefaces) in order to be 'beautiful' or 'cleaner' more 'simple' to be accepted by what all these people are now referring to as (dare I say art) better.
"the expressionism and voice of a graffiti artist" Seriously? These were not artists, just bored teenagers. There is graffiti art. This was not. And if it illegal, it has no right to stay.
Why are so many people here calling this "art" and those people "artists" XD Seriously? Any dumbass with a spraycan can tag a damn wall with their cool gang name. It's street art when it means something , it's street art when it makes you want to look at it, it's street art when it improves a bland wall that you would otherwise have completely ignored. This is not street art. It's just dumb kids marking their "territory".
Individual tags are but one on a wall leads to a second and in time the colors and layered words look amazing
I agree plus a lot of graffiti is actual art and drawings and not just tags
Hmmm... Graffitis are like artistic symbols. Change it to oridinary words is like delete. Like change Mona Lisa's head to geometric symbols - circle (head) with two little circles (eyes).
In my opinion this kind of graffiti is not an artistic expression, simply I don't get it.
Yes, exactly, that was the purpose. Tagging is not artful graffiti, it's just bullshit from bored teenagers. So there is no art destroyed, indeed it is turned into art by deleting the original tag.
You don't get it, because you never read about what it means and where and when and why it first started. So how can you judge something you never bothered to learn about? No one cares about your opinion. Graffiti tags are not made for you to enjoy their artistic side or for you to "get them".
Sorry, I wanted to reply to Henryk.
Hugo - yes, mabye for You it's bullshit from bored teenagers. But for teenagers - and not only - it's something more. Also - if it changed to oridinary words it's not better.
Pretty graffiti I can honestly call art exists but such tags don't have anything to do with it (at least from my point of view). Art should send a message better than "I have a spray and I don't care about the owner of this wall".
Unless it's not supposed to be art so... what's the point of it? I'd really like to understand what's the reason good enough to draw on someone else's walls.
Yeah, you're right: it was like delete them! Graffitis are just fucking vandalisms, made by fucking idiots, and have to be removed.
Exactly
