In conversation with Nick, overall 2022 third place of the 2022 South African Photographer of the Year Competition.

1.What does Photography mean to you?

Photography is a means for me to capture and share the beauty of nature. It is a tool that helps me convey the awe and majesty that I experience when spending time outdoors.

2.What drives you to capture the images you do?

I am driven to showcase the Fynbos biome’s flora in its natural habitat, specifically in mountainous regions, while lit by beautiful light. I hope to inspire others to explore nature as well and stand in wonder of one of the greatest gifts we have received, planet earth.

3.What does the South African Photographer of the Year Awards mean to you?

I am humbled and honoured.

4.Why did you enter the South African Photographer of the Year awards?

I think it is a great way to see how well your images fare in comparison to other photographers. The only way to grow is to put your images out there and receive feedback.

5.How does it feel like to win with South African Photographer of the year?

I was overcome by emotion when I first heard that “Valley of the Queens” did so well in the competition. There is a lot going on behind the scenes – hard work, late/early hikes and even disappointments that no one sees – so it feels good to receive recognition for it.

6.What advice do you have for anyone who would like to enter these kind of competitions?

Be brave enough to enter your images, but keep your expectations realistic. Photography is subjective and not everyone will enjoy your photos. You have a unique perspective and keep on photographing what triggers your curiosity. The aim of photography is to enjoy it, not to win competitions.

7.Will you be entering again in 2023?

Yes. There is so much more beauty that the Cape Fold Mountains have to offer…

8.Do you believe competitions such as South African Photographer of the Year is important for the industry?

Yes, I think that competitions such as SAPOTY gives recognition to photographers, but more importantly gives them exposure to a wider audience. It also provides fellow photographers the opportunity to meet each other.

9.Tell us a little more about your winning image?

For me, “Valley of the Queens”, showcases the beauty and majesty of the Cape floral Kingdom. The satisfaction of hiking so many times to the same spot and finally arriving with the Queen proteas in full bloom, arranged in a triangle and then having low clouds with beautiful light breaking through, is second to none.

10.Anything additional you’d would like to add?

I would like to thank SAPOTY for arranging the competition and my fellow photographers who entered their images into the competition. Thanks to my family and friends who many times have to wait for me, while I scout a new spot or take a photo. And thank you to my Heavenly Father for giving me the talent and ability to experience a glimpse of His glory.
