Just as the coronavirus outbreak began to reach an explosive level across the nation, I flew from New York to Arizona. Very quickly businesses closed, masks were required and life felt like a bad episode of the Twilight Zone. I was fortunate to be living with my family and fortunate to be living in the middle of the Arizona desert as it began its Spring bloom.

The desert landscape became my artistic inspiration and my comfort. Over the weeks, I created a series of tiny paintings that reflected my love for the arid surroundings and the uncharted feeling of isolation created by the pandemic. Every new desert painting was a deep breath. A new beginning to tell my story using color and composition. I strove to reproduce the varied facets of the isolation and despair through these desert landscapes.

Now that I’m back in New York, I realize that the desert became my dear friend who listened without judging and allowed me to create my special ‘Desert Diary’ consisting of 8 tiny paintings. All of these paintings are 4 inches by 4 inches. This is my personal art history during the pandemic told through paint on canvas.
