Getting lost is part of the experience in the old town of Marrakesh. You come across merchants and donkeys and motorbikes as you walk through the narrow alleys. You will go in circles and get lost, and get back to the place you started your day only to discover that you have ended up on the other side of town. It is a sensuous experience where light and shadow are as complex of a pattern as the wings of a butterfly, and the different aromas and smells will guide you the through the maze of the Medina (old town).

Marrakesh is also called the Red City for its red sand stone buildings. The palette of the city reflects the heat of the city and its people. As you walk through the long and narrows alleys, drapes of muslin shading the direct sun, carpets pinned to the walls one is catapulted into a world of fantasies and mystery. Falcons and chameleons can be bought in the far end of the Spices section, kilometers worth of fabric is being guarded by veiled women, spices of every colors are held in giant sacks and suddenly the tales of the Arabian nights do not seem so fantastical anymore.

The main square Jemma El Fna is a haven for snake charmers, crooks, acrobats, henna artists during the day. At night it turns into a chaos of music food and dance. It is the heartbeat of the city. This trip was not about taking photos. I carried a camera and if a photograph presented itself, I shot. So unfortunately I have not gone through any great lengths to capture the intricate and mysterious atmosphere of the red city to its full potential. But maybe it will excite some of your sense and make you plan your next trip.
