Have you ever attended a chivalrous tournament between Knights? Maybe you’ve attempted to smash down a wall with a 12-meter-tall siege engine? Can you play the game of petanque or cook a sausage in a 15th century kitchen? If you answered ‘no’ to any of those – don’t worry, you’ll have these and many other amazing opportunities during the “Times and Epochs. The Gathering” festival. And you can be sure – it won’t just be a fun experience but educational too, as many professional historians have taken part in preparing the festival. The international organization, EXARC provided many of them. They work to popularize experimental archaeology and open-air museums in more than 40 countries.

EXARC will introduce its innovative archaeological project on the Bronze and Stone Ages. It will also take part in the festival’s main competition – the “Times and Epochs” project contest. The main idea behind the contest is to recognise and reward the most promising historical projects from around the world. The total prize fund stands at 9,000,000 roubles ($150,000).

For instance, on June 10th in Kolomenskoe Park, a Roman army will undergo military training exercises, fearless gladiators will fight in the arena and legions will march behind their high commander. In the Tsaritsyno park on June 2nd, guests will enjoy “The Carousel” – a splendid theatrical performance from era of Catherine-the-Great’s Russian monarchy. More than 200 re-enactment enthusiasts will work with 200 actors and musicians to bring the shows to life.

Throughout the “Times and Epochs. The Gathering” festival, early 20th century Russian culture will be on show in all its magnificence! You’ll be amazed by retro theatre performances, as well as faithful reproductions of Anna Pavlova- and Isadora Duncan-style ballet on Tverskaya square. Plunge into a poet’s bohemian life with some Russian Futurism in Stoleshnikov lane, discover a vintage Movie Theater on Kuznetsky Most and try your hand as an actor in a film by Sergei Eisenstein!

On June 12th “Times and Epochs. The Gathering” will culminate in large-scale Russia Day celebrations – the Russian Federation’s national holiday. For one day only, Tverskaya, the busiest street in the very heart of Russia’s capital, will be transformed into a pedestrian venue packed with all the festival’s main attractions, including historical reconstructions, craft workshops, a medieval market, a Historical European Martial art tournament and a performance by the Kremlin Equestrian School!
