“Mom Of The Year” Breaks Silence On What Happened After Viral Giants Clip Sparked Marriage Backlash

Ericka Alvarez, who was dubbed “mom of the year” after a September 22 San Francisco Giants game clip showed her carrying her baby and several boxes of food back to her seat, has finally shared what really happened.

The moment quickly went viral, and several viewers accused the man beside her of leaving her to handle everything alone.

Now, in a Substack post, she explained why she wants people to stop judging her marriage based on one short video.

The original video came from the Giants’ game against the Minnesota Twins at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The Giants lost 3-2, but the moment in the stands became a much bigger talking point online.

Alvarez was seen walking back to her seat while carrying her young daughter and several boxes of food. The man sitting beside her did not immediately appear to help her, as reported by Bored Panda.

Giants announcers Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow noticed the scene and started joking about it during the broadcast.

Krukow called Alvarez “the definition of a multitasking mother,” while Kuiper joked that the man had asked whether she had forgotten something. After they sat down, the man took one box and started eating while Alvarez continued holding the baby and other food containers.

The announcers eventually called her “mom of the year.”

Millions watched it within 24 hours, and many viewers assumed they were seeing a woman carrying the physical and emotional weight of an unequal relationship. Some even urged her to leave the man.

But viewers did not hear the conversation between the couple.

After the clip went viral and the man was severely slammed, Alvarez clarified what really happened

In a post shared on September 25, Alvarez said the man is her husband, Ramses, and she was carrying their daughter, Anatasia.

She said the couple had initially found the broadcast funny. They knew the announcers were joking, and their friends and family started texting them about the clip.

The situation changed once strangers began treating the announcers’ jokes as proof that Ramses was a bad husband and father.

Alvarez wrote that Ramses had offered to take Anastasia while she went to the restroom during the fifth inning.

She decided to keep their daughter because the San Francisco night was chilly and the baby’s body heat kept her warm in the carrier. She also planned to change the baby’s diaper.

While she was away, Alvarez sent Ramses a picture of the food menu and asked what he wanted.

He told her to get whatever had the shortest time. She even attached a screenshot of the same in the post.

She returned with brisket sandwiches and loaded fries. According to Alvarez, Ramses moved her jacket so she could sit down, greeted their daughter, and asked whether she wanted to eat first.

She told him to go ahead.

“I had eaten before we left for the game, and I knew he hadn’t had a full meal all day,” she wrote.

Alvarez also said he offered to take the food containers from her lap, but she declined because she was uncomfortable holding them and wanted to keep the food away from the dirty stadium floor.

Then, according to Alvarez, he even offered to hand-feed and share his sandwich.

“I told him to enjoy,” she said.

Alvarez claimed that the stadium camera could not show what her husband was carrying too.

Ramses had recently lost one of his oldest friends, a baseball player he had known since childhood.

She wrote, “His d*ath was untimely, and my husband will never admit it, but I know he’s been grieving him deeply. There was no formal funeral or memorial service for him to attend. I suggested a Giants game as a way to remember his friend.”

“I wanted Ramses to watch baseball, eat some ballpark food, and have some room to reflect on his friend’s passing.”

During the game, she noticed Ramses texting his group chat about the friend they had lost. That context was apparently invisible in the viral footage.

“The camera showed what I was carrying in my hands. It couldn’t show what he was carrying that night,” Alvarez wrote.

She also rejected another part of the internet’s interpretation.

Alvarez said she was not arguing with Ramses about ketchup or threatening to hit him when she turned toward the woman sitting nearby.

She was talking about their daughter.

“I understand how it looked on television. But we could hear each other. The announcers and audience couldn’t,” she wrote.

The mother also pushed back against the idea that Ramses normally leaves her to handle their children alone

Alvarez said there have been many times when she needed time for herself and Ramses took care of their children.

At bedtime, he puts their son to sleep while she handles Anastasia. They both change diapers, attend medical appointments, read to the children, and play with them.

The family also regularly attends baseball games together.

“We’ve brought them to Giants Opening Day and travel yearly to at least one away game with the 49er Faithful. Along the way, other fans have cheered us on and told us what a great team we make with our kids,” she wrote.

She believes that teamwork was still there that night, even though the viral footage failed to capture it.

“That evening, I chose to take care of him,” she wrote. “A camera catching me doing something for my husband doesn’t show all the times he has done something for me.”

Alvarez also shared personal details about the couple’s life that were never visible in the stadium clip.

Six weeks before Anastasia was born, Alvarez said her employer of 13 years laid off her entire division.

At the same time, Ramses had put a down payment on a larger home for their growing family. Her job loss meant he had to manage the mortgage and oversee the remodel while they prepared for their baby’s arrival.

Her medical coverage was also set to end before the birth.

“Even with those new responsibilities, he made it possible for me to continue seeing the doctors I was comfortable with after losing my own policy,” she alleged.

After Anastasia was born, Alvarez experienced complications that contributed to postpartum depression, stress, and anxiety.

She said Ramses encouraged her to focus on recovering and later made it possible for her to stay home with their children while he handled the family’s bills and the work involved in preparing their new home.

Alvarez claimed she cried while reading comments and social media posts explaining what her marriage supposedly looked like.

Some messages reportedly became deeply disturbing. According to Alvarez, people went looking for the couple’s names and phone numbers, while some even told Ramses to k*ll himself.

Despite Alvarez’s lengthy explanation, detractors remained divided.

One person wrote, “Grieving a d*ath means he can’t hold his own child while she gets the food? Did his arms stop working?”

Another argued, “Grieving the loss of a friend while at a baseball game doesn’t excuse a grown man from being empathetic towards his wife & child.”

But others defended Alvarez’s right to explain her own marriage

Alvarez herself said the experience taught her how quickly people can fill in the blanks when they see a short viral clip.

“I don’t know the whole story,” was the lesson she hoped people would take from what happened.

She also addressed the people who had called her “mom of the year.”

Alvarez said she appreciated the compliment, but she wanted people to understand that supporting her didn’t mean deciding she had to do everything herself.

“Please believe me when I tell you I can only be so with the dad sitting next to me,” she wrote.
