Model Mara Martin has been in the headlines lately, after nursing her baby on the catwalk as part of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit show. The happening, which was described as a spur-of-the moment thing, has been hailed as ’empowering’ and ‘inspirational’ by many media outlets, and Mara herself wrote on Instagram: “I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”
Predictably however, not everyone was impressed. Amongst the outpourings of positivity and respect, there have been a number of critical voices offering up a range of grievances, as well as the usual trolls who are just there to spread hate. One commentator, who identified herself as Mara’s best friend, wasn’t having any of the hate however, and delivered a quite stunning response, full of love and respect for her friend’s actions.

Honestly, so many fashion shows have models parading topless. Some clothes are literally transparent. But noooo, it's breastfeeding, so she's totally an attention seeker.. ugh. Those negative people should seek some empathy.

But I think it's because if she has a baby on her boob she can't be objectified as we're used to doing with models, so people find it "disgusting".

I personally dont think it's about the boobs. It's about feeding a baby. Why on earth do you have to show everybody that you fed your baby? It's not so abnormal for a model to seek for attention, but to accesorize a baby for you is just too much.
At the same time why not? Rocky joe. Why does it cause a problem if it's from her boobs when it wouldn't have been a problem if she was holding a child feeding from a bottle down the runway? You might not have a problem with seeing boobs but you might be uncomfortable with seeing them used for their function, to nourish a child, as that doesn't sit comfortably with the notion of boobs as sexual objects.
Have you ever consider that more important for her was to just feed her hungry baby, and not "show everybody" that? Baby was hungry, mother feed it AND had her job done on the same time. It's amazing

But, Sports Illustrated has been pulling this kind of stuff for a few years, so, whatever excuse they give, it's really about attention. I'd put the blame more on SI than her. And, lets' face it: this was supposed to be for men who pay attention to the SI swimsuit addition, and we really do not care not want to be dragged into this world. We just want to see women with bikini bodies in bikinis. Call us pigs, whatever. Don't care.

She did not do it for the views, she did it because SI wanted her to do it. And this business is tough. If you donMt do what they say, you can get fired. She loves her career and thus did it.
