Prepare yourselves, dear Pandas, we’re about to journey into one of the most shadowy and hilarious corners of the internet—into the vast Cringe Empire, home of the elusive, socially inept neckbeards. Known for their poor hygiene, misogynistic points of view, [ahem] ‘interesting’ style choices, love of anime, katanas, body pillows, and Japanese culture, these fedora-wearing individuals are called neckbeards.
A pejorative term, it lightly pokes fun at those geeks who have over-inflated egos (and more than occasionally—over-inflated tummies), are often misogynistic, call people “m’lady,” and believe that acting like a functioning member of society is more of a recommendation than a requirement. Whether or not they have a beard on their necks or in their hearts is beside the point. All that matters is the beard in their soul.
One place that publicly shames the most cringeworthy neckbeards is the ‘Just Neckbeard Things’ subreddit, a community of nearly 809k members. It’s an online group “for mocking those who adorn their necks with proud man fur.” And I love their tagline which is “barba non philisophum facit” which roughly translated from Latin means “one's beard does not make a philosopher.”

Bored Panda reached out to fitness expert Jack Bly to hear his take on what we can do to improve our health and fitness if we feel that it's negatively impacting the quality of our lives. I wanted to get fitness expert Jack's take on what foods to go for when losing weight. Going on a new diet can mean that you're constantly feeling hungry which can, in turn, mean that you're more likely to go back to your old snacking and fast-food habits.
Jack told Bored Panda that high satiety foods are key to keeping hunger at bay. "The foods you are eating need to be high in protein and high volume in order to fill you up," he pointed out.
According to Jack, if someone's looking to lose some weight, he recommends weight lifting as a priority when it comes to exercise. However, mixing that together with some cardio "would be optimal," in his opinion.
"Weight lifting is more of the 'long term fix' as when you put on muscle mass, your body burns more calories just at rest. Thus, this makes it much easier to burn fat and keep it off long term," he said.

The fitness expert told Bored Panda that if someone's dissatisfied with their life and their health, they need to "get very clear on the CHOICE" they have to make. "You can endure the pain of workouts and different eating habits OR you can endure the pain of obesity, brain fog, poor mood, early death, low energy, medical bills, and low confidence."
He added: "It isn’t much of a choice at the end of the day."
How neckbeards are defined entirely depends on who you ask about them. For some, they’re anime-loving, fake katana-wielding dorks who dream about living in Japan. For others, they’re arrogant jerks and 'incels' who see themselves as better than everyone else and have a sense of entitlement that few can match. Often, neckbeards portray themselves as gentlemen, philosophers, and men of culture. Often… they’re anything but.

Others still associate neckbeards mostly with their exterior characteristics. The iconic fedora. The baggy suits. The overweight physiques. The slightly (fine, fine, more than just ‘slightly’) weird obsession with the ‘My Little Pony’ cartoon. And, of course, the scruffy, unkempt beards on their necks that are a modern version of what’s popular among the Amish community in the US. Each of these things doesn’t mean much in isolation, but when taken together, they paint a picture of someone who may need to work very hard to improve their life.
The r/justneckbeardthings subreddit has been active since late June of 2013 and recently celebrated its 8th birthday.
The moderators have got only 4 rules that members need to follow, including avoiding reposts (“Reposts are for losers,” they explain), not being a neckbeard on Reddit, being nice to turtles (here are a couple of possible explanations for the phrase), and avoiding sharing any and all personal info. Sure, the subreddit might be all about mocking neckbeards, but the mods point out that they don’t want to see any bullying or witch-hunts.

This is probably super confusing without knowing the reference. There was an episode of Rick and Morty where Rick went off on a tangent about the sauce when it was available at McDonalds years ago. McDonalds rolled with the sudden interest in the sauce and brought some back very briefly. Some Rick and Morty fans got super excited about it.

I don't find this amusing. I understand that there are people with bad behavior, characteristics, etc. but there is a lot of reference to them being fat and generalizing this "group" in general leaves a bad taste in my mouth. By no means do I condone any of the sexist or homophobic statements and feel those individuals got the comments they deserve. However when others are openly hateful and insulting to a "group" I don't think they are effectively promoting better behavior.
I fit most of the criteria of a neckbeard and still think these posts were hilarious. It's really about their a-hole attitude and their entitlement, and not about looks or interests.
For me, it's generally the bad behavior, that includes the misogyny, gatekeeping, hostility as well as hygiene and grooming (since that is part of basic social functioning). The only time the weight thing bugs me is when they have a double standard. They feel entitled to the pretty girl of their dreams with a body like an anime character when they're not doing things to meet that idealized body standard themselves. They require a woman to hit the gym and have the dietary discipline to be thin, and often deride fatness in a woman as disgusting then complain that women are too shallow. They want a woman who puts a lot into their looks and health but has no such expectations in a partner. They want her to not be shallow and somehow not mind that he is.
People who fit that full description are horrible. But when someone publicly fat shames one of them, what they are saying is hurtful to all fat people.
Stereotypes exist for a reason. I've met WAY too many people like this and they CHOOSE it.
Nobody chooses to be teased. I've been a bit of an oddball my whole life. I like a lot of my odd quirks but the parts that have a hard time in social situations can result in me disliking myself. And sometimes if I don't take a step back that will deepen the odd bits that people don't like. So, I don't like people who are misogynistic but I feel for the mal adjusted.
It's just sad. The whole stereotype is too accurate. Go find some information on anime conferences or visit an online forum where they hang out to convince yourself. And people are judging it. But the fact of the matter is that these are just people who did not fit in and somehow got convinced that by just letting go of everything they somehow will find their way. And to cope with that not succeeding, all kinds of sick dynamics occur. So no, not funny whatsoever. Everyone's behaving like bleh.

Humans are very tribal. Strong need to feel part of a group and in hand with that is attacking those who are different - whether they deserve it or not. Sometimes it is useful, sometimes it is damaging and sometimes it don't make no never mind.

Never heard the term "neckbeards" before and couldn't really work out from the thread what the pattern with "neckbeards" were, seems just anyone that others want to look down on for a whole range of different reasons
Neckbeards is basically an alternative word for incel, if that helps. The same group that has terrorist cells like the one who helped arrange the mosque shooting in Christchurch. So yeah they aren't all innocent
Incel is short for 'Involuntarily celibate", so there may be two different meanings of that word because it's pretty obvious that the posts don't relate in any way to terrorist cells.

@JennyLaRue— Actually, some incels have been found to be related to extremist behavior, in Canada, USA, and New Zealand, among other places. Just because this post sticked to the commentary of individuals exposing incels and not the literal news’ headlines that further showed just how extreme incels can get when they aren’t told off, doesn’t change that they are related.
I added a simple reference to point out that neckbeard/incel is not just a way of looking down on someone, in my first comment. A reference to an event prominent in my mind in which myself and much of my country was made aware of over a dozen people, one of whom became our first terrorist, were on a 'low threat' watch list, of extremist white supremacists, extremist "incels", and a combination of the two. This extremism is no longer classified as low risk. This is why in my mind it was a slightly relevant thing. And i dont believe its a conspiracy theory. I would say it has a lot to do with their personality. Ugly is only skin deep and really if a person is nice it does not matter if they are not model material.. For example, I was in a relationship for 7 years with a guy who did not have a chin (birth defect, long story). Only noticed it the first time we met. He is a really nice person and good with women.

Because I know how horrible life already is for ugly people who are always necessarily hated, rejected and lonely, and it is extremely unfair that they are bullied, harrassed, accused and shamed for things to which they are not even related. Conventional beards are grown down and usually combined with hair around the mouth and on the chin, a neckbeard is just covering the neck without hair on chin and face. And when someone just doesn't groom themselves and has some spots that don't grow hair to begin with, it looks very odd.
I think the neckbeard description also refers to a badly maintained beard. Well-groomed people with beards trim things up and get rid of the scraggly neck hair. Also, not everyone can grow a good looking beard. A person that values good grooming will realize this and shave it off. If your beard is there even when it looks terrible because you can't be bothered, then you've got yourself a neckbeard.

"Neckbeards" is a derogatory term used to describe overweight geeks, but people think it's OK to hate on them since they are usually White men, and it's trendy to hate on them right now. If this were about overweight female anime nerds, the article would have been about "body positivity" , inclusiveness and understanding that they are just passionate about their hobby and we need to respect that.
