Missing Titanic Tourist Submarine With Billionaire Aboard Is Still Nowhere To Be Found While It Only Has Up To 96 Hours Of Oxygen
While most of us were hiking, brunching, or sleeping off the aftermath of Saturday evening, some were not enjoying their regular Sunday afternoon. After a submarine on a tourist expedition to the Titanic shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean ‘set sail’ this Sunday morning, it soon vanished, prompting the deepest undersea rescue mission thus far.
It might seem ironic that the iconic ship which graced the depths of the Atlantic for more than a century is responsible for a disaster like this. However, with “around 70 hours of air left,” according to the Daily Mail, there was no time to think about that, as the U.S. Coast Guard was quick on its feet to launch a search and rescue operation. The clock is ticking and the deep-sea vessel has not been located yet.

On Monday morning, a search and rescue mission was initiated in the North Atlantic following the disappearance of a tourist submarine that was on an expedition to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. Lt. Jordan Hart from the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston confirmed to CBS News that rescue efforts were currently underway off the coast of Newfoundland.
The submersible went underwater during a dive around 4AM Sunday morning, and contact with the crew was lost approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive, according to a tweet from the Coast Guard. OceanGate Expeditions, a company specializing in manned submersible expeditions, confirmed that they are “exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.”
Today, the US Coast Guard announced that an extensive search covering an area of 10,000 square miles in the North Atlantic Ocean had been conducted for the missing submersible. Given that the vessel is equipped with sufficient air supply to sustain five individuals for 96 hours, it was estimated that the “maximum life support” would endure until Thursday morning.
Despite the limited progress in the situation, apart from the encouraging news that “signs of life have been detected at the site,” Andrew Von Kerens, a spokesperson for OceanGate Expeditions, issued a statement to Bored Panda:
“For some time, we have been unable to establish communications with one of our submersible exploration vehicles which is currently visiting the wreck site of the Titanic. Our entire focus is on the wellbeing of the crew and every step possible is being taken to bring the five crew members back safely. We are deeply grateful for the urgent and extensive assistance we are receiving from multiple government agencies and deep-sea companies as we seek to reestablish contact with the submersible. We pray for the safe return of the crew and passengers, and we will provide updates as they are available.”
People on the internet shared their prayers and bewilderment at such a risky venture in the first place
Just wanna say, glad some current news is making it to BP. People may have comments and feelings and I am more interested in what BPs think and feel than right wing v left stupid comments on Twitter and news sites.
Agreed. I don't have social media but caught myself wanting to say something about the subject and realized it was BP and I could. I hope they keep posting it
Load More Replies...I absolutely hope they are saved. In the meantime, dozens of migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean in the same week and I do wonder why oh why that doesn’t deserve similar attention.
It's had a LOT of attention in UK media. EU parliament have debated it too I think.
Load More Replies...I am sad to see that a rescue team is now putting their life at risk, in order to save some rich people who wanted a "kick in life" . I hope that everybody returns safe.
Humans are humans. We’re all equal at the end of the day. Some will disagree with me but just because they’re rich and did something dumb doesn’t mean they deserve to drown/suffocate at the bottom of the sea in basically a metal coffin :( I hope they return safe too Christophe, and maybe learn a lesson or two!
Load More Replies...I heard there are basically two options. The first is an electrical/communication failure that explains the radio silence but doesn’t restrain their ability to resurface (there are mechanical failsafes). They would be somewhere “safe” on the surface, waiting to be found (they cannot get out by themselves). The second option is an integrity failure (leak) that sunk them with close to no chance of survival.
Billionaires doing billionaire things. Why did they go down there in the first place?
Just a few days ago over 500 refugees drowned trying to cross to Europe but 5 super rich in a submarine gets all the attention. Don't get me wrong, this is terrible but some perspective maybe?
'Vanished into thin air' .... underwater? Informative article but headline needs more work
i agree with wat a bunch of commenters on the post said. 1: its a grave site for the many lives lost on the titanic let them rest in peace and 2: unless its 100% scientific purposes no matter how rich u r u shouldnt b allowed to go down with the scientific team if ur a civilian with no reason except excitement to b down there. this is a tradegy and i hope they r found alive but its very dangerous even for the scientists whose whole job is studying the titanic and its mysteries as well as scientists who study how the ship has effected marine life. diving whether in a sub or scuba diving is dangerous even for highly experienced people. something can always go wrong.
i think is kinda sad that only two people on the comments that were shown hoped for the best, period. All the others did was to judge them and pretend they care. Whether you agree or not with the expedition, this is not the time to discuss it. They seem to care more about the Titanic people than about the living ones
I don't understand the obsession with "it's a grave, leave it alone" either. The Titanic passengers are dead. They've been dead for over a century. They don't care if their grave is disturbed. Let's hope we get an update post to this where the sub was found and the people were rescued, I'd love to hear their story about what went wrong and how they handled it.
Load More Replies...I hope with all my heart that they find these people in time to save their lives. I can't even begin to imagine what they're going, or went, through. I'll be keeping a keen eye on this and keep a track on how it's going. I can understand curiosity, but with such a dangerous endeavor, some things just aren't worth it. Good luck to all the crews searching for the Titan, and even more good luck for the Titan and its occupants. We're all hoping for the best outcome on this.
It's a tragedy, but for f***s sake will these rich f*****s stop waving their d***s in the breeze??
My dad's rich friend was investing in the submarine until he actually saw the design. Dude who made it said he was a "master submarine designer" my dad's friend backed out and is trying to sue for his money back, from what I heard. So glad he did. Edit:forgot to mention that the first version of the sub was starting to get its hull cracked on the test dives. This is the SAFER version.
I have made over 60 dives in research submersibles including five to similar depths. Those subs all had mechanical safety backups; they could drop weights and blow air into tanks for ascent. Titan lost coms halfway down, which suggests a power failure. If it cannot ascend, it may never be found. The horror.
For all the people saying it should be left alone, even the paid trips usually do some work (surveying or such) but the paying passengers fund the scientific dives, One trip took water sampples at regular intervals looking for DNA of creatures we don't know. The deep ocean is massively underexplored and if these guys want to see the titanic and in the process fund the science I'm all for it. Unfortunately the CEO for this company is also on board so it might be the end of the practice.
This is horrible, I hope they are found safe, but I’m fearing the worst.
I don't really get the "let them rest in peace" thing. Is this disturbing the dead somehow? It's very tragic and VERY ironic, but I don't think someone visit a shipwreck is much different than visiting a cemetery. If it were just researchers and not a tourist, it's unlikely people have the same sentiment.
I have to wonder how many people saying the sub's passengers deserve this think nothing of visiting Valley Forge or Gettysburg. "But my attitude is different!" Maybe, maybe not. You don't know these people. Was it foolish and disrespectful of them to travel to the Titanic? Yes. That doesn't automatically mean they deserve to die for it.
The owner of the company complained about "over-regulation" by the health and safety agencies. FA&FO
I saw an article today that showed the interior of the sub and tweets from a guy that went last year. Seeing the bare bones they were working with, including video game controllers (?) I can't believe these people got on. However, with that being said, they did. I cannot imagine the terror they must be feeling without feeling like I'm losing my mind myself. I hope for a miracle. Last I heard, they should have enough air to last until Thursday afternoon. I cannot express how much I hope they are found in time.

Why the he!! did I do the math on this! They have an hour and 8 minutes or so left of air at the time of my comment here. Of course "90 hours of air" can't be exact but...I am upset knowing that if they haven't been found by now, they're gone. Why did I decide to figure that out :(
Honestly with that sort of money I can't say I'm as sad as I could be. They're not wonderful people if they're paying that much to see a cool shipwreck
I can see a film made out of this story, "based on real events".
