The human eye is a remarkable piece of biological engineering that has been confidently misreading situations since the dawn of time. It fills in gaps and makes extremely bold decisions about what it is looking at before your brain has had a chance to weigh in. Usually this works fine. I used to live near a park that had a log that turtles would sun themselves on (similar to the ones in this image) and I would walk through that park to my mom's former neighbourhood and see the turtles. I also do not live in an area where there are crocodiles (certainly not in a public park), so I would not assume this was a crocodile.
