Curiosity is a fundamental human characteristic that drives us to explore and comprehend our surroundings. It is the spark that piques our interest in learning, discovering, and creating. That is how the book “Why: What Makes Us Curious” by Dr. Mario Livio was born.
Dr. Mario shared what inspired him to write and research curiosity. “I am a very curious person, and at some point, I became curious about curiosity itself. While doing the research for the book 'WHY?' I was surprised by the fact that not very many researchers are studying curiosity.” It seems that everyone was asking questions but not the core of where those questions come from.

Curiosity can manifest itself in a variety of ways. For some, it's a desire to understand how the world works that drives their interest in science and technology. Others are drawn to history, literature, or the arts because they are fascinated by the past and the stories that make up our collective human experience.
When learning about curiosity itself, it turns out there are more layers to it. Dr. Mario shared: “There are a few types of curiosity. 'Perceptual' curiosity is the curiosity we feel when things are surprising or ambiguous. 'Epistemic' curiosity is the one that drives scientific research. 'Diversive' curiosity is what we do to avoid boredom, and 'Specific' curiosity is about specific questions. There are more types (e.g. 'Morbid' curiosity, when people gather around accident sites).”

Each of these types of curiosity is responsible for different areas in that we, as humans, evolve and move forward. Dr. Livio shared that “perceptual curiosity is associated with an area in the brain that is related to conflict, or hunger, it represents an unpleasant state that we want to get out of. Epistemic curiosity is associated with an anticipation of reward (like when someone offers us a piece of chocolate.”
He added: “Epistemic curiosity has indeed led to progress in science. We are most curious when we already know something about a subject, but we know or feel that there is more to be known. Human curiosity has always surpassed the one needed for mere survival.”

Curiosity is a driving force behind innovation and progress. Many of the inventions and discoveries that have shaped our world today would not have been possible without curiosity. Therefore, we wanted to know some practical strategies that individuals and organizations can use to cultivate and leverage curiosity in their daily lives and work.
“Always start with something the person (or organization) is already curious about (and not with something you want them to be curious about) and then, find a way to connect what they are already curious about to what you think they should be curious about. Also, I coined the phrase, 'curiosity is the best remedy for fear.' If you are afraid of something, try to learn more about it,” shared Dr. Mario.
If you are interested in learning more about curiosity, there is no better way than reading Dr. Mario Livio’s book “Why: What Makes Us Curious”.

This Pizza Shop Offers Two Types Of Straws, But Questions Your Reasoning
What I hate about the paper straw thing is that we were led to believe that we as individuals are the problem, when corporations cause more sea and air pollution than the population combined
I don't get the paper straw thing, especially when your drink also comes with a plastic cup and plastic lid.
Load More Replies...Oh thank god. I would absolutely love it if this became a thing. I hate those paper straws.
This whole straw thing is so stupid. That's the least of our environmental concerns. I got a spoon that came with my mcflurry that was thick plastic, enough to make 25 straws. Also, the amount of plastic waste just one corporation produces in a month would be enough straws for everyone for the next 50 years. I swear the misdirection is all just a bait and switch game. But I guess if people are hating on straws, then they're not paying attention to the actual problem, so well done whoever started this ban the straw fad.
The problem with the numerous “just use your mouth” comments, aside from the ableism, is it’s pretty darn hard to drink shushies and milkshakes without a firm, wide straw. Unless you like walking around with stains all over your face and clothes like a durn toddler.
Ok, ill give you that point. I guess Boba isn't that much fun either.
Load More Replies...I find so funny that suddenly plastic straws became monsters that kill turtles as if they could simply walk to the sea to do that
Mankind managed to use paper straws for decades without a problem. What has changed is that people used to consume their beverage in a timely manner. Now folks nurse a smoothie or shake or soda for hours.
Can't we go with the Italian model and have pasta straws? They take hours to go soft and you can collect them and get a free meal.😁
Environmentalists want *me*, an individual who has to drive several hours to get to the nearest body of salt water, to suck liquid through paper because sanitation corporations ship loose garbage overseas and the trash falls into the ocean and chokes marine animals???
More sea creatures die from ingesting cigarette butts then they do straws. Fix a real problem. 🌴😎🌴
Honestly we should all be switching to the straws made from agave and get rid of the paper straws
Am I weird to bleach mine, roll them in a paper towel then keep them in the kitchen and glove box?
Bought my kids washable ones from Tupperweare, they are great. I just gave to stop waiter from bringing them straws in caffes or restaurants.
One video with a turtle basically spiraled this. While horrific and definitely a contribution to the plastic waste, it's percentage is miniscule in comparison to the rest. Corporations are one of the biggest issues to the environment today, and the fishing industry is the number one polluter to the ocean. Aside from all the trash everyone dumps into the ocean, there are endless amounts of fishing equipment simply abandoned in the water. That being said, while I despise paper straws, amazingly the ones from McDonald's don't get soggy.
Wish I could upvote this 10k. Why o why is there such an obsession with straws!! Just get yourself a sippy cup if drinking is that difficult.
Load More Replies...Although I sometimes use plastic straws I have been using reusable ones more often. I've tried hard plastic, silicone, and metal ones. I prefer the metal. They're pretty cool. They come with a little brush and some even come with a case for easy transport.
Of all the environmental pollutants circulating through our lives, this should be at the bottom of the list. If we haven't evolved to a point where we are able to consume a fluid without a straw, then we should welcome an asteroid with open arms.
Why either? Did everyone forget how to lift a cup and drink? Too heavy for you?
Some people have disabilities that make it difficult or impossible for them to lift cups. Some can use metal straws, however certain motor disabilities make metal straws a risk as if someone moves suddenly with a metal straw in their mouth they could break teeth etc. Some can use paper straws but in many cases the paper is too flimsy. For many disabled people their only option is a plastic straw.
Load More Replies...We took one thing that pretty much needed to be plastic and stopped making them, and still we have so many other things using it unnecessarily
When I was a kid straws were made of... Straw. A plant. They didn't get soggy, worked fine, as far as I can recall. Would it be really that expensive to plant those again? I have no idea.
Ask yourself "If I was having this drink at home, would I even think of using a straw?"
Most wouldn't use a paper cup or thin plastic lid at home.
Load More Replies...Objects are the enemy. Not the people who decide to dispose of them improperly.
There's no reason *not* to try and help slow down or stop environmental damage. Sure, one person not using a plastic straw doesn't make a lot of difference. But when millions of people every day use and discard plastic straws and other fast food packaging without a care, it becomes a bigger problem. Yes, big corporations cause more environmental damage. But if we can ALL change just one or two little things about the way we live our lives it can make a massive difference. I'll take having a soggy straw, or the inconvenience of bringing my own straw, over the possible extinction and suffering of even more creatures that have to live on this planet with us.
