Healthy relationships require mutual trust, respect, and good communication. These things are not optional

Every healthy relationship, romantic or otherwise, should have a sense of give-and-take. In other words, it should be a two-way street. Both people put in the effort. Both people respect each other’s boundaries and needs. If that’s missing, the entire foundation of the relationship is unbalanced and in jeopardy.

According to Jamie Cannon, MS, LPC, toxic relationships tend to revolve around one-sided power and control. Staying in a toxic relationship can harm your mental health and lead to emotional damage, depression, anxiety, and undermining trust in future relationships. At the end of the day, you have to learn to listen to your gut and be aware of any warnings that your family and friends share with you about your partner.

Broadly speaking, one of the main reasons why unhealthy relationships are so difficult to leave is that the victim is scared. They might be scared of being alone. They might fear what other people will say about them. Or they might be utterly terrified of starting over. There’s a lot of internal pressure and social stigma at work here.

Not all toxic relationship red flags are overt. Some are much more subtle. Cannon explains that one warning sign you should not ignore is that you feel a general sense of unease when you think about the future with your partner. Check in with your instincts, doubts, and skepticism, and be honest about whether you feel that something’s off.

Another issue that should set off your inner alarm bells is that you have trouble having serious conversations or feeling serious emotions with your partner. “As relationships progress, so too should the level of trust and camaraderie. Conversations at the start of a relationship are understandably more superficial and lighthearted—but if you’ve been in a relationship for an extended period of time and still can’t seem to have a serious, heartfelt conversation, it may be a signal something’s off,” Cannon explains.

“Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, and the trust that accompanies that respect opens up both partners to vulnerability—it’s a necessary part of the process. If you find yourself consistently being more vulnerable in a romantic relationship than your counterpart, it needs to be explored and brought out into the open. Vulnerability is a major way toxic individuals gain power and control over another person.”

It is also unhealthy if you’re the only person in the relationship who seems responsible for how things turn out. In short, if you’re the only one putting in the effort, something is off. Meanwhile, it’s important that you form your own opinion, but you should not entirely ignore what your loved ones and close friends say about your partner. If they’re worried, there might genuinely be something to be worried about!

Toxic relationships can be tough to leave, but you owe it to yourself to prioritize your health and well-being

And lastly, the type of arguments that you have in your relationship matters. Good arguments are a healthy part of any relationship because you’re able to talk through differences, perspectives, and emotions without fear. If, on the other hand, your arguments don’t have definite resolutions.

“Communication is a definitive cornerstone for healthy relationships, and learning how to disagree respectfully is vital. If you’re constantly feeling discomfort when you bring up a different opinion, or you get the sense you need to tread very carefully when it comes to disagreeing, it could be a sign of a toxic relationship. Learning how to ‘fight fair’ is a process, but it should be one that moves forward—not one that gets stuck on a repeat cycle with no end in sight.”

As per Verywell Mind, you may need to consider leaving the relationship if you’ve consistently set boundaries and your significant other keeps disrespecting them. Breaking up is tough, especially when there’s toxicity involved. But no matter what, you need to prioritize your well-being, health, and needs.

There are a few ways that you can end the relationship:

    1. Tell them you’re ending the relationship in person and explain why
    2. Allow the relationship to fade away over time by communicating less and less
    3. Immediately stop communication, especially if you feel threatened

If you decide to end the relationship in person, the upside of this approach is that you can take accountability for your feelings. You might not be able to control how your (now ex) partner reacts, but you can do your best to avoid blaming them so that they don’t get defensive.

“If you are leaving a romantic relationship, you may need to develop a support network in order to safely leave. For instance, if you are concerned about how the person will react, you may choose to speak with them in a public place. Let a trusted person know when this will take place and where you will be, so you can plan to meet up with them afterward,” Verywell Mind suggests.
“You may need to stay with a family member or friend until you figure out a new living situation, away from your partner. […] If you’re dealing with someone who drains you of your energy and happiness, consider removing them from your life, or at least limiting your time spent with them. And, if you’re experiencing emotional or physical [violence], get help right away.”

The YTA people are either loonies or didn't read the post. OP clearly said he set a boundary with his flat (his flat, not their flat) that she could see who she wanted but not bring the cheating ex over to his flat but she did again, which shows total disrespect for a reasonable boundary. That's not controlling, that's being an adult, not a doormat.
