Guy Gets Same Tattoo As His Rescue Dog, People Explain That It’s How Neutered Dogs Are Marked
330Kviews
Most of us would do anything for our dogs, going to great lengths to show love to our 4-legged friends. But some are willing to do more than others, and Texas resident Chris Mendiola is here to show us how it’s done.
The 26-year-old decided to show his love and solidarity by getting the same tattoo design as his dog, Bear. When Chris adopted Bear back in 2010, he noticed a small tattoo on his underbelly which sickened the man, knowing that Bear had bounced from home to home and someone had done this to him.
So last year, he decided to get a matching tattoo and shared the post on Facebook, where everyone quickly pointed out something that Chris appeared to have missed. The symbol on Bear’s stomach was an indicator that he was a neutered dog and not a sign of animal abuse, as Chris had first thought. According to the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, it’s a standard procedure to mark neutered pets in animal shelters, so that no one unnecessarily operates on the dogs again.
As the online ridicule ensued, Chris was quick to explain himself. “We talked to our vet about the dog tattoo. I knew what it meant, I knew what I was getting myself into,” he told Buzzfeed. Apparently, Chris knew about the meaning of the symbol all along, except the internet wasn’t too hot on believing his tattoo idea story. Scroll down to read the story for yourself below, and make your own judgment on Chris’s response.
Meet 26-year-old Texas resident Chris Mendiola, who decided to prove his love to his dog, Bear
Mendiola got Bear back in 2010, after the pooch was passed from one household to another
After adoption, Chris soon noticed that the dog had a tattoo on his underbelly and was sickened by it
“It sickens me to know that people actually tattoo their pets”
So last September he decided to get a matching tattoo, as an expression of solidarity
What he seemed not to know is that the tattoo was an indicator that he was neutered and not a sign of animal abuse
As the internet ridicule ensued, Mendiola was quick to defend himself
He said that he knew what the tattoo meant
“We talked to our vet about the tattoo. I knew what it meant” Chris commented
“They can believe and say what they want, but the tattoo is not for them, it’s for me” he added
The internet, however, wasn’t buying it and were quick to point out some inconsistencies in his story

Am I the only one wondering why a male dog that has been desexed, has to have a tattoo to stop vets giving it another go???? I would think the lack of big hairy testicles would be suffice. I have an 'entire' black lab.....trust me....you aren't wondering whether he's fixed or not.....them things be right out there...
I tend to agree with you, but a family member of mine recently took a male stray cat to the vet thinking it was female and asking it be spayed. The vet didn't realize he was male until he opened him up. I kept asking if the vet even did a cursory exam to start with. How does that even happen? Even if the balls haven't dropped, it's not difficult to tell the difference between males and females if you have even a basic understanding of what you're looking for. Cats can be a little more complicated than dogs to tell, but still not so different that you can't tell upon examination!
With cats it can be very tricky. But a vet should be able to definitely see the difference.
I agree that raises an eyebrow, but then again there may be more to the story. I know someone who didn't know they were pregnant until 8-1/2 months. People call BS on stories like that, but once I found out the whole shebang it made sense. Always gotta hear both sides.
Here in Holland and in other European countries as well, cats get an ear cut when they are neutered. Males left ear, females right ear. 12-7-15-to...2c1c72.jpg
Unless your dog is improving the breed, seeing balls is some crazy male thing. Get neuticles if they are that important. I know I'll get down voted, but dogs get prostate and testicular cancers. Females get mammary tumors. It's utter nonsense to deny hormones. It's not about behavior issues. I've ridden stallions. They are stallions for one reason: they improve the breed of horse, it's not vanity. My horse is a gelding because he doesn't have perfect conformation to pass along. It's very simple.
I would like to say that you are probably right about those who don't desex their animal. But the statement about improving the breed is all wrong. The fact that we breed them to make them better may work for one specific trait or another, like speed or strength. However it does not help the dog as a species. In the long run we have proven that breeding dogs to make certain traits deprives that species of the ability to over come other issues that would be handled by not breeding for certain things.
Why isn't your dog neutered?
My dog is not a jumper, digger, biter, mounter, growler, dominator or explorer. His companion passed away (she was neutered) and so he has no access to other females. My vet was very supportive of my choice to avoid unnecessary surgery. There is some evidence to suggest spayed dogs can find it hard to shift weight in later years and as he is a labrador, I do not want him to have to deal with that, unless it is absolutely unavoidable. The day may come when the plums are picked, but it won't be today.....
i took a dog to be neutered, he came back appearing to be intact but he was sore and scarred.
Preventing assh*les to sell them as breeder?
a few years ago we found a stray cat and we were so lucky to find her a new home. they brought her to the vet to be neutered and, while executing surgery, they realized she had been neutered in the past already
That's exactly what I thought too.
some people get false implants to look like they still have them, so it's possible.
Same here with my entire corgi.
Why troll him? Because he rescued a dog, because he didn't agree to him being abused by previous owners when he though he was abuse? Because he wanted to show solidarity in his own way, not only by saving, feeding and loving the dog but also having the same mark as him? Ok, he didn't know but I don't think that everyone knows about this. It's the first time I find out about this too and I really don't understand the people who laughed at him. How many people would rescue a dog of that kind? Most of them would go to a breeder and buy it. BP should take down this article, there is nothing hilarious or promotable in it, we;re making fun of a person with good intentions.
I totally agree with you. There are plenty of other sites if you want to look at people getting made fun of, I come on here to get away from it.
I think the "hilarity" comes from him trying to cover it up with a lie after he was first ridiculed, probably coupled with him not doing anything to check if it had any other meaning than "random doodle" (as it seems he think it was).
I think you are right.
He is ripe for ridicule because he posted it originally on social media to try and shame those who came before him, that's why. If the photo was taken by someone else and posted without his consent it would be a cruel story. He brought this one on himself by being an ignorant, virtue signalling dickhead.
(not to mention him doubling down when called out, which is another virtue signaller common theme)
I didn't know that's what that tattoo meant. I've never seen one before. I'm with you. The guy shouldn't be shamed, he should be APPLAUDED for caring so much about his dog, that he'd do something like this.
I love the tattoo and I didn't know what it means and didn't bother to look for it since it was stated already. Anyway we know that even if people do right things it'll be overlooked if they do something unintentionally.
I totally agree w/ u Vancea! Why make fun a person who's only intention was 2 show how much he loves his dog. Shame on the folks that went all ape on this fellow a pox on you!! Take care
It didnt start off as a toll response. Then. It reved up once he himself was all puffed up & stated he knew what the image ment. I didnt know they tattooed fix animals so I can understand the not knowing. No shame in that; it wouldnt have gone futher if the kid didnt try to play it off as "yea I knew". My husband trys that move & I tell him; im not mad of you dont know; im mad you tried to lie. I tell kids the same thing. No shame in not knowing at first; but dont bs unless its a job interview (joking....joking).
Maybe because it's fucking hilarious ?
If he didn't want to be made fun of, he should've done his research before making a stupid decision.
Sh*t happens don't worry bro. Besides not everybody knows what the tattoo means. Just tell your friends its a hamburger with an arrow on top.
That's cute... (-:
