30 Apocalyptic Pics From The ‘Wasteland Weekend’ Where Costumes Are Mandatory
About 4,000 people have flooded California's Mojave Desert for the annual post-apocalyptic festival called Wasteland Weekend, and the pics looks out of this world. The festival, which was inspired by the Mad Max film series, is unlike most desert parties because it requires all attendees to be in costume. Yes, even staff members and journalists. The idea is to create a full-immersion effect, making everyone feel like they’re inside a Mad Max universe for 5 days. And it works.

This year, the event ran from September 25thto September 29th., and included a number of themed distractions from the real world. There were live bands, DJs, car cruises, costume contests, a film festival, a post-apocalyptic swimsuit competition, Thunderdome battles, and much, much more.

"We’re going to pull out all the stops for our tenth year celebration," Wasteland co-founder and event director Jared Butler said in a press release. "It’s amazing that we’ve been able to have this home-grown post-apocalyptic fantasy world last this long. It took a lot of hard work and dedication by our whole community and we want to celebrate that."
Wow, this one had to take forever to create. It is very cool and they covered
Thanks, it kinda evolved over a few years so it’s difficult to say just how many hours were involved
Load More Replies...Not as bad as you’d think. On the day this was taken I wore it for 6hrs straight. It has a built in hydration pack plus an air pump that can connect to the mask to feed cool air into it. Also lots of areas for ventilation
Load More Replies...My mistake, my wife’s costume was 8kg, this one is 12kg total but you still don’t really notice it when you’re wearing it.
Load More Replies...No, he'll just plugs his suit in his vehicle coolant system.
Load More Replies...The event has sold five years in a row, and another sellout is pretty much inevitable. "Wasteland is run by a small staff and an army of volunteers. We want those volunteers to grow their skills with the event, so that our staffing and infrastructure never get overwhelmed by the size of the population," Butler said. Wasteland Weekend art director and Chief of Operations, Adam Chilson, added: "When we grow at a reasonable pace, it means veteran attendees always outnumber the newcomers. It helps the event keep the feeling of being one big returning family."
Oh hey this me 🥰🥰🥰 my ig is @andtheforestbegantosing if you'd like to see more pictures!
such a precious design! must've taken a lot of work, and it was well worth it! <3
Blue Araujo did my hair and did a fantastic job. She’s based out of West Covina. I’d definitely go back to her for braids and any hair color you’re trying to pull off with an extensive hair color background. She really takes care of you!
I dig Star Wars. I wanted to go for promoting an androgynous sort of look within the Wastes. I’ll totally take the compliment! Lol
Load More Replies...LOL ... That does NOT look comfortable.... But she does look good!
Getting there is less important than going in style. What's the point otherwise.
Load More Replies...If they're hollowed out all the way through it would make breathing a hell of a lot more comfortable.
Breathing was very comfortable and practical. It kept my lips from being chapped and from breathing sand and dust. I preffered it on really. I played the whole set with V2A with it on!
Load More Replies...I thought exactly the same thing - hey, normal-shaped people!
Load More Replies...It is. But Fallout is basically a love letter to Mad Max so it gets a pass.
Load More Replies...The one on the left reminds me of the "Warrior woman" in The Road Warrior.
Might not be legal on public roads. Sharpened things on it an all that (unless soft rubber painted well!)... skewering cyclists and pedestrians is frowned upon in our pre-apocalyptic world.
Load More Replies...crazy...I took this picture. No idea how you got it, but her costume was awesome.
There are quite a few badass ladies that can fab their own sh-stuff in the Wasteland
Load More Replies...If only dude on the right were just a little bigger in the arms...just doesn't look right otherwise.
Because someone in a post-apocalyptic, Mad-Max type universe would be using whatever found items that they could salvage to make their clothing. I don't see them turning down items that may prove useful....graters included.
Load More Replies...I love that this person just had a spare Huey laying around to create this vehicle.
Bell OH-58 Kiowa actually. A "Huey" is the nickname for the classic Bell UH-1 Iroquois.
Load More Replies...The tribe, The Dead Crows brought this Kiowa Warrior to Wasteland as a stealable item, it was traded between tribes all weekend and was a spectacular time had by all. I will be compiling all the different stories and locations it went at Wasteland for further publication soon! - Chris Hatch
I've heard of a note in a bottle...but a baby?!?!?!
Load More Replies...The Dead Crows HeckleCAWpter featured in the most epic photo from Wasteland weekend 2019!
I like the jade colored makeup as a change from the black.
Load More Replies...LOCK JAW...that's what stepping on a rusty piece of metal will do to ya.
You can tell this would be bad guys camp in apocalyptic movie because they are wasting water.
How else you going to have a Wet T-Shirt Contest!!
Load More Replies...demi....................... they clearly aren't pants like get your s**t together
In a world like that...beggars can't be choosers.
Load More Replies...I can't think right now but this reminds me of a character from some video game.
I'm thinking Queen Amidala just because of the face makeup.
Load More Replies...Way to clean to be out there...must be one of Immorten Joe's special pieces.
If that bikini line keeps getting any lower...she'll be known from crack to crack.
How does she keep from flashing everybody? It takes guts to wear that getup!
I like how after the apocalypse, these ladies still make time to shave their legs. Super important.

The license plate is clever - there would be plenty of them, and it's light enough to shape it without having a metal shop.
Come the apocalypse I reckon there might be fewer women choosing bikinis as survival wear
These people look like they're very boring and have tons of time and money.
he sold out. now he's in the big money and only plays love songs for teenies
Load More Replies...That's the spirit ! The apocalypse hasn't even happened yet, people are already celebrating it :D
It has, we just don't notice it because we've got a lot of distractions
Load More Replies...I hope this event supplied tons of sunscreen. Just looking at those pictures of people in the desert wearing next to nothing is making my skin feel sunburned. My favorite pics were the people who had costumes that looked like they might actually be practical after the apocalypse. Bikini's and such are definitely sexy but I want coverage/realism
I want to go there one day. But it's very hard to get a ticket I read. For a steam/dieselpunkfan it must be heaven!
It's not hard to get tickets..just go to the website and buy when they go on sale.. We got our this year two week before the event....
