I. Death Note
This show mixes fantasy with the real world, a great dose of cat and mouse thriller introduces you two exceptionally intelligent minds. L is our protagonist and Light Yagami, the antagonist fight over the Death Note. This show is hilarious and haunting. The colorful characters will suck you into this dark roller coaster.
II. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
“To obtain, something of equal value must be lost.”
This is the law that governs alchemy, a science that allows human beings to shape the world of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood through transmutation. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is about two brothers who break deep taboos of transmutation by attempting to bring their mother back to life. The series begins with the two brothers questing to restore their original bodies. But of course on their journey, as we get to know their world better, we experience some of the largest plot twists ever seen in anime series. The worldbuilding, the characters, and the Elric sibling’s brotherly love will sweep you off your feet.
III. Ouran Highschool Host Club
Pure fun! This show will make you laugh and forget about all your problems at least for a couple of hours. The protagonist is Haruhi, a poor tomboyish student at a school for the ultra-wealthy. She is only able to attend because of a scholarship, but unable to even afford a uniform.
One day, she stumbles across the peculiar but very popular Ouran Host Club and accidentally breaks a vase. Since she is unable to pay for it, she’s told to stay and work to cover the price. However, they soon realize, that she would be more valuable as a club member. All this time they do not realize she’s a girl due to her tomboyish style, so they fix her up and give her a male uniform. Haurhi has no choice but to play along and finally able to form real friendships she has never dreamed of.
IV. Paranoia Agent
Probably this is the best psychological anime we’ve seen so far. This show is not an easy ride for sure. It deals with relevant deeply-rooted societal problems. And the fact that Satoshi Kon (the creator) likes to play with perception, reality and notion of time is well worth to keep in mind. This show is entertaining from the intro until the ending credits. The story folds out as seemingly unconnected citizens of Tokyo, who are targeted for bludgeoning by a boy with a golden baseball bat. As detectives try to link the victims, they discover something unexpected; all the victims’ lives have improved in some ways after the attack.
V. Cowboy Bebop
Is one of the coolest and most visually stunning animes out there.
The series set in the future (2071) following two bounty hunters Spike and Jet who travel through the solar system on a spaceship named Bebop. They just want to live their lives but their past keeps creeping back to put them into complicated situations.
What do you think we missed? What would be on your top 5 list?
