Fred is a 10-year-old labrador retriever at Mountfitchet Castle in Stansted, UK. As a loyal and friendly pup, he recently became renowned as he took on the role of Dad of nine orphaned ducklings.
Last week, the ducklings’ mom disappeared suddenly, leaving them alone. As staff at the castle were worrying about them, Fred took to them and even babysat them.
The nine ducklings usually hitch a ride on the back of Fred. Then under the care of Fred, they have a swim in the moat. When it is fine, the ducklings and Fred also have a nap on the lawn.
“They absolutely adore him and he has now resigned himself to being a stay-at-home dad looking after the nine baby ducklings,” said Fred’s owner Jeremy Goldsmith.
Castle staff said they hope Fred could shoulder the role as a dad for just a few more weeks and when they are old enough, they can venture off on their own.
