In honour of Black History Month, cosplayers across social media platforms are participating in #28DaysOfBlackCosplay, including Instagram star Kiera Please.
The 21-year-old Virginia native has taken the Internet by storm with her cool costumes, and we're not just talking about the time she did Storm from X-Men. Whether she takes on anime or American cartoon characters, her ability to transform into any of the famous characters she chooses is truly awe-inspiring.
Kiera is participating in a hashtag challenge created by fellow cosplayer Chaka Cumberbatch that aims to break down racism in the cosplay community. The challenge is a celebration of multiracial talent and promotes equality and inclusion for everyone interested in cosplay, especially young people of color who may otherwise feel unwelcome. "Racial boundaries"? Since when? From everything I've seen of cosplay anyone and everyone is accepted, no matter their skin colour. It's fun that she's doing this, but why do we always have to bring up race?

That's not the case at all. Many Black people are discriminated against in cosplay. I've seen people be vicious about it! It should be an accepting community, but it is not always. I think most Black cosplayers have been told that they can't do it because of their skin color.

I've never seen or heard it. I've only seen people get upset if a Caucasian person cosplay a character that's not white, some people get offened...

Does the headline need to say she is a black cosplayer? Didn't realize it said that when I clicked the link from FB (I was drawn in by pics) but I don't see how her skin color is information needed in the title. She's awesome and her cosplays are amazing- no need to mention her race.

I love how she's breaking the racial boundaries of cosplay that don't exist... Like damn she's not even black - I've seen white girls with a darker tan than her. It's hilarious that a lot of the characters she's cosplaying as have much darker skin that her yet she's the "black" girl "breaking boundaries". All that aside though she is actually really good.

Ive never heard of anyone in cosplay treating anyone differently for their race. Kind of an odd subject for the article to be about her race. But she has some good cosplay. That extremely goofy movie cosplay got me in love <3

A lot of the discrimination comes from within the Black Community when it comes to Cosplay. Like oh that's some s**t only white people do. Why you wanna be white? I have heard this soooo many times from my own people when we dare to do anything that hasn''t been designated as Black.

I like how the article doesn't specify how she's breaking the boundaries. By cosplaying and using her natural skin tone? I mean granted some of her cosplays are characters that aren't canonly black, but this isn't like some OH S**T THIS IS A NEW THING!!!! Going by this, POC cosplayers are always 'breaking the racial boundaries of cosplay' whenever we cosplay a character that isn't canonly a POC. <.<

First of all good for her! Secondly what racial boundaries? Why do you have to try to twist something and wonderful and accepting as cosplay into something ugly, it's not. There are no racial boundaries in cosplay.

I clearly call this b******t. 1) If she is a Virginia native, she is maybe a powhatan, a nottaway, a meherrin, a monacan or a saponi, but surely not a "black" 2) Cosplayers normaly give a s**t about race, body shape or talent, I also see some handicapped people cosplaying and everyone is nice and friendly. I just speak for my european experience, but cosplayers don't think in race boundries or something like that. Maybe it's an american thing. And well, fighting racism by choosing only colored characters? Not really clever.

Like a lot of this cosplay stuff, I think it objectifies women in too many instances with it being too overtly sexual.

Cosplay tends to be one of those unifying and inclusive type of activities ... yes, more Blacks, women, Muslims, etc. that have marginalized elsewhere and were a minority, even in cosplay are joining the ranks, but the headline makes it sound cosplay was something only a select group of people took a part in ...
