Having a medical emergency is hard enough as it is, and anyone would be scared in that position. However, most Americans have a lot more to worry about during a visit to the ER than many other people from developed countries. According to the nonprofit Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI), the cost of ER visits are on the rise. The organization has examined a decade’s worth of insurance claims for hospital emergency room bills, and determined that from 2008 to 2017 the prices have substantially increased. HCCI discovered that the average ER visit now costs $1,389 and has reached a 176% increase over the decade.

While those who have insurance are not always made to pay full price, the uninsured people suffer the most. This prompts people to look for a way to reduce their bills. After TikTok user shaunnaburns3 told people to ask hospitals for itemized bills once they are faced with a hefty charge for a trip to the ER, people decided to put that to the test. Luckily, for some people, this tip actually worked and helped save them hundreds of dollars.

America's healthcare system keeps on surpising me. When I think it can not get any more ridiculous, something like this turns up
Indeed, just how can possibly a bill go to 30k$ to 0$ !?
Fraud, that's all.
$30K to $0 can happen when someone uses the miraculous words, "An dI will call the TV news right after I all my lawyer". My mom's $257K bill was total BS for the issue in question (a cardiac test). Yep, a quarter-million.... B/c she's on Medicare, I suspect,t he hospital went nuts triple-charging etc. I just walked to the adminstrator's office, no appointment, and told his door dragon, "TV gets this story right after the lawyers do, have fun explaining this to the feds when they ask why Medicare got charged almsot 100 times the actual cost of the test." I didnt' even make it back to the elevator before that hospital administrator had me sitting down with a cup of tea, a hundred apologies, and an abject (written!) promise to "amend the issue" by the end of business that day.
Uh... because they are scamming us right into bankruptcy.
I'm not sure what hospital system these people are using, but Mayo Healthcare, (the same system with world-class Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN) has always given me an itemized bill. And I find it very hard to believe that magically after they asked for an itemized copy the outstanding balance went to $0.00.That would mean they didn't get any services rendered. My guess is that the original bill was BEFORE insurance and once you asked for an itemized copy insurance has been applied and magically you are given this "new" amount. The US Healthcare system is FUBAR, yes, but hospitals won't charge you for thousands and wipe your account clean because you asked them for an itemized bill; they aren't that nice. Most likely the people that think it's a "hack" just don't know the system well enough to realize the paperwork that's shuffling around behind the scenes.
@DIppinDot, I agree, the scams are endless, which is why you get the itemized bill, know your rights, and have no fear telling the SOBs you WILL expose them to the public and the feds for their fraud.
Not even third world countries do this to their citizens. I'm sorry for most of you, but you're treated worse than cattle. Healthcare and consumer protection is a sham in the US. Just work until you fall over and consume, and don't you dare become uppity. It's paradise for rich people and hell for everyone else. I already mentioned this on other similar posts, might seem like I hate the US, but I actually love it, that's why it's making me sick how it's descending into this rightwing Dystopia. There's responsible capitalism and then there's vulture capitalism, you're being slaughtered by the vultures.
