History is one big treasure box full of unforgettable moments, incredible people, encounters, places, events, incidents, you name it. But with time flying at the pace of a hadron collider, they easily slip under the dusty blanket of time and oblivion.

Thanks to this incredibly entertaining Instagram page titled “Lost In History,” though, many of these rare moments that got captured on camera were dug up from the past and brought to the present time. Dedicated to 20th-century people and culture, the account is sharing pictures with its 1.2M followers that illuminate history in this entirely new perspective.

Psst! After you're done reading this one, don't forget to check out our previous feature with more "Lost In History" pics.

I just listened to a podcast- Mobituaries- the episode was Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Death of a Marriage Ban. It talked about an interracial couple that married shortly after the Loving case in the U.S.. It was very interesting, but the most encouraging fact was that at the time of the marriage in 1967 only 4% of people approved of interracial marriages. Now it is over 90%!

Simone Segouin, Mostly Known By Her Codename, Nicole Minet, Was Only 18-Years-Old When The Germans Invaded

Her first act of rebellion was to steal a bicycle from a German military administration, and to slice the tires of all of the other bikes and motorcycles so they couldn't pursue her. She found a pocket of the Resistance and joined the fight, using the stolen bike to deliver messages between Resistance groups. She was an extremely fast learner and quickly became an expert at tactics and explosives. She led teams of Resistance fighters to capture German troops, set traps, and sabotage German equipment. As the war dragged on, her deeds escalated to derailing German trains, blocking roads, blowing up bridges and helping to create a German-free path to help the Allied forces retake France from the inside. She was never caught. Segouin was present at the liberation of Chartres on August 23, 1944, and then the liberation of Paris two days later. She was promoted to lieutenant and awarded several medals, including the Croix de Guerre. After the war, she studied medicine and became a pediatric nurse. She is still going strong at 96.

Just to throw a new comment into the mix, and ease the UK versus US going on somehow in this otherwise useless post, on a time wasting website.... Regardless of who's history is worse, or less worse, which I can't believe I'm even saying that phrase, can we all not just agree the point is to learn from and improve our global society? How is bickering and fighting about this online any different in reality, nobody in the world can seem to agree on anything, even when it comes to what terrible means to one person or another. And I'm only at number two in this post, yikes.

Ok, so this is incorrect. She was present at the Oscars ceremony and accepted it onstage in front of the audience at the Academy Awards. An "exception" was apparently made for her to attend, though, and she sat at a segregated table in the back of the room. The article shows her accepting the award. “Photographs bring history to life in an immediate and visceral way,” Lisa Yaszek, a Regents Professor of Science Fiction Studies at Georgia Tech, where she researches and teaches science fiction as a global language crossing centuries, continents, and cultures, told Bored Panda in a previous interview.

Yaszek explained how it’s different from exploring history through written sources. “When we read books, we get lots of detailed information about historical events: who was involved, where the event happened, what factors led to and resulted from it, and so on.”

German Anti-Nazi Political Activist, Sophie Scholl, Was Executed In 1943 For Leading Non-Violent Student Resistance Against Hitler

She was 21 years old. Her last words: "How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"

Yet today, in the US, we see the White Nationalist and pro Nazi movement gaining mainstream momentum. With events like Kanye and Kyrie Irving publicly making Antisemitic remarks, Trump and the MAGA crowd climbing into bed with Pro Nazi groups and Elon Musk's version of Twitter giving the extreme Right hate groups a voice on a mainstream platform, the sacrifices made by this young lady and others like her are fading into history. Whether through design or plain stupidity, the Right's attack on education represents a real danger to progress and human decency. This danger is especially evident when guys like Kanye and Irving embrace a movement that views them, and all non-white races, as genetically inferior. It shows a remarkable ignorance of the evil Nazis represent.

It kills me to see people react to Trump as if he just came out of nowhere. He's a symptom not a result, and the causes of that symptom are so entrenched in our DNA, and have been for so long, I don't believe we have long as a country. The decline over the past forty years has been so stark, but in the past twenty it has become so very much worse.

On a similar type of story, 3 doctors from an hospital in Italy created a fake desease "syndrome K". They made up horrific symptoms, got people to cough whenever soldiers were around. The soldiers were too scared to catch it to get anywhere near and the (Catholic) hospital's staff was able to hide away jews and political dissidents.

Holocaust Survivor And The Soldier Who Rescued Her In 1944

Holocaust Survivor And The Soldier Who Rescued Her In 1944

During World War 2, John Mackay was part of the Scottish commando unit that rescued a group of prisoners from the Nazis as they were being marched from Auschwitz to another concentration camp. Little did he know that amongst the prisoners was a young Hungarian woman by the name of Edith Steiner. He would see her again at a dance, which was organized to celebrate the liberation. John asked a friend to ask Edith if she would dance with him, but she sent his friend back with the message that she would only do so if he asked her out himself. So John worked up the courage to go up to her and ask her in person, and she accepted. In 1946, they married and returned to Scotland where they owned and operated a small hotel in Pitlochry before retiring in Dundee. After celebrating their 71st Valentine's Day together, Edith passed away in June of 2017, just three weeks before their wedding anniversary. She was 92 years old.

This is similar to my grandparents! My grandmother was imprisoned in a concentration camp. My grandfather was a Scottish soldier and became a prisoner of war in her camp. After liberation they married and came to Scotland. My grandmother knew this couple as only a small number came to Scotland.

NZ only now embraces Māori people and there is still residual racism. For a long time Māori language was prohibited in schools and the education system was very skewed against Māori students with one pamphlet from (colonial) England saying that Māori children only need to be educated enough to provide servants or labourers.

To be fair, this is a human flaw. All humans do this to all humans. I’ve read absolute horror about the brutal xenophobic torture and general dehumanisation of other tribes and ethnicities all over the world. It’s curiously patronising of us westerners to decry our histories when were the first to start introducing human rights and the Geneva convention etc. Uyghur Muslims in china RIGHT NOW need help. Not reparations: urgent rescue. North Koreans are NOW literally eating their pets and wild plants. It’s not racism — it’s just human evil.

This Is Shavarsh Karapetyan, A Retired Armenian Swimmer.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In 1976, He Had Just Completed A 26 Km (16 Mile) Run When He Heard A Loud Crash

A trolleybus had lost control and had fallen into a reservoir. It was 25 meters (82 ft) off-shore and had sunk to a depth of 10 meters (33 ft).⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Karapetyan immediately dived into the sewage-infested waters and managed to kick the back window of the trolleybus with his legs, despite zero visibility from the silt that had risen from the bottom. Of the 92 passengers onboard, Karapetyan pulled out 46 people. 20 of whom survived.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The combination of cold water and the multiple lacerations from glass shards led him to be hospitalized for 45 days. He developed pneumonia and sepsis. While he was able to recover, damage to his lungs prevented him from continuing his career as a swimmer.⁣⁣

I had heard this story a couple of times but it still rings in my nerves everytime I read it. As a Certified SCUBA instructor, I can't even imagine the terrible conditions he put his body through by just 5 or 6 times, but to do it 96 times and in cold, infested, dark waters blows my mind! What a true hero!

Now that’s a technicality. But he pulled out 46 people from which 20 have survived. He could have pulled someone and the person died after 3 days. Do we count that he saved that person or not? It could be that he saved between 20 and 46 people, in case if he pulls them and they are STILL ALIVE. They might not have survived, but the question is when did they die. His effort and contribution to life is more than these 20 lives.

And in 2022 in America you can rape a child and she has to have your baby all because some men still believe rape isn’t shameful but women having a choice regarding their own life is- be it abduction or not, things like this outrage me on such a visceral level it makes it really difficult, as a woman, to view men in a positive light. Is there no moral compass? Have we as a society learned nothing? 😡 😤

CALM DOWN there Gypsy! First of all there are very VERY few men who don't consider rape shameful irregardless of their views on abortion! Then you need to take a deep breath, count to ten, and then try to realize that what you consider to be a woman having a choice, many men - and women - consider the murder of an innocent child. And the last time I checked no fetus or zygote has ever been found guilty of rape. So please explain to me, on a visceral level or otherwise, why that unborn child has to die for the sins of its (biological) father? Now even though I am a rotten no-good man, I DO realize what a terrible position this is for the rape victim. And I DO believe that only she can decide what is best thing to do. I would suggest that you, Gypsy not judge ALL men on the basis of a few rapists or even men that are pro-life!

Yaszek argues that even when shot by the most amateur of photographers, these images have a unique effect on our modern minds. “These images of people living in and through various moments in history provide a sense of immediate emotional connection—we think, ‘wow, so that’s what it would feel like to experience that moment of history!’” Yaszek explained.

Lena Baker Was A Black Maid That Was Put On Trial For The Killing Of Her White Employer Earnest Knight For Trying To Rape Her

Though she claimed self defense, she was sentenced to death by an all white male jury. Her trial only lasted one day! Sitting in the electric chair, this is what she said: "What I done, I did in self defense or I would've been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God''. She was executed on March 5, 1945 as the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind 3 children. Her last words, along side with her picture are displayed near the now-retired electric chair at a museum at Georgia state prison in Reidsville. She was Pardon 60 years after her Murder.

I still don’t get posthumous pardons, the person is dead and will never come back, the loss of name and honour can never be restored and several generations of family and relatives have been through the suffering of irreplaceable loss (sometimes with stigmatisation). Perhaps, some people just want to go through the motions so they can feel a little bit better about themselves having realised the grievous harm their forebears caused.

The honour in the eyes of the public CAN be restored. It's not about "feeling a little better about themselves" it's doing what little we can to recognise the injustice and making step to acknowledge it and ensure it does not happen again.

Please don't just put up one picture and judge a nation and it's people by it. Yes the current regime is fairly awful but why do you imagine the revolution happened in the first place? Mainly because as usual the then powers that be US and UK wanted control of their oil and helped the shah of Iran stage a coup against a democratically elected PM because he nationalised the nations oil so that the country would benefit rather than foreigners. So the overthrew the peoples will installed a puppet who was as bad as the current monarchs in the Middle East and when his own people protested he used the country's military to kill them. That is how you bring about your own downfall. These were educated progressive people but were pushed into a corner and they just fought back and made a deal just to get rid of him and maybe the cure was worse than the disease but I think punishing a whole nation with sanctions because they wanted to use their resources for themselves is a d**k move too.

Islam is not the same as arabic culture. 2 billion people on the world are muslim. Most people fighting against the "islamic revolution" were too. As most people who died fighting against ISIS, etc.. Seeing the whole islamic world as a single simplified thing is ignorance. Edit: I know Iranian peole are not arab, but I see very often an identification between Islam and Arabic culture and most of the time people forget about gnostic christians in Egypth or just assume the arabic or middle east repression of woman is something related to Islam, which is not.

Ok, I am about to go on a rant, but I just wanted to contribute by saying f**k the Islamic Republic. The amount of s**t that the clergy has caused, the amount of suffering, martyrdom and terrorist acts are indescribable. Hijab was a sign of modesty, of a woman’s respect, and was a happy CHOICE. Iranian royalty used it as a sign of high wealth and modesty. مرگ بر دیکتاتور.‌ and there are also stories no one knows. The new Revolution is not “sudden” it is not “a nation who suddenly had enough”, the truth is, this s**t has been going on for years. Think how well the clergy can hide this stuff with torture, extortion, murder and threats, if the world didn’t find out about these protests before. This started ever since the new constitution, something people never understand.

Before the Islamic Revolution was the Shah, installed by the UK in a Coup d'Etat because Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh tried to nationalize the iranian oil industry. "An Amnesty International assessment on Iran for 1974–1975 stated: The shah of Iran retains his benevolent [world] image despite the highest rate of death penalties in the world, no valid system of civilian courts and a history of torture which is beyond belief. ... the total number of political prisoners has been reported at times throughout the year [1975] to be anything from 25,000 to 100,000" Imagine how desperate people have to be to prefer Khomeini.

Interestingly, by looking at historical images, viewers may develop an emotional bond. “Once we feel an emotional bond with the people in historical photos and perhaps even begin to imaginatively empathize with them—we forge new intellectual connections to history itself, asking ourselves: ‘Why are the people in this photograph in this situation in the first place? What happened leading up to this photo—and what happened afterward?’,” Yaszek told us.

This Is 18-Year-Old Alice Roosevelt And Her Long-Haired Chihuahua Named Leo In 1902

She also had a pet snake named Emily Spinach who she would wrap around on one arm and take to parties. Alice was extremely independent and unlike many women of her time, she was known to wear pants, drive cars, smoke cigarettes, place bets with bookies, dance on rooftops, and party all night. In a span of 15 months, she managed to attend 300 parties, 350 balls and 407 dinners. A friend of Alice’s stepmom once remarked that she was “like a young wild animal that had been put into good clothes.” Her stepmom went a step further and described her as a “guttersnipe” that went “uncontrolled with every boy in town.” William Howard Taft banned her from the White House after Alice buried a voodoo doll (of Taft’s wife) in the front yard. Woodrow Wilson also banned her after she told a very dirty joke (sadly no record of the joke exists) about him in public. Her father, Theodore Roosevelt famously said, “I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both.” Alice once told President Lyndon B. Johnson that she specifically wore wide-brimmed hats around him so that he could not kiss her. During an interview in 1974, Alice described herself as a “hedonist.” She died in 1980 at the age of 96.

That’s what I took from this as well. No different than now - a poorer person would be called a menace and addict; rich and she’s a legend. Congrats for her pushing the boundaries and perhaps inspiring a generation to push boundaries, but it was a privilege to never have to work or worry about life

I think it may be just an early/one of the earliest "modern" photographs of a kitty :) It's amazing to think that in the 100+ years since this photo was taken, Sussy may have had a hundred generations of descendants! (of course, we should all spay and neuter our pets, but I doubt that was common in 1917 XD )

According to their ancient traditions, both men and women would experience the pain of childbirth. This is how it would be done, the father would position himself on the rafters with rope tied around his scrotum while the mother would pull on it while giving birth.

My gran worked as a nurse in the UK during the late 20s in a hospital for returned soldiers, in the ward dealing with injuries like this.... A lot of them could never return to their families because their injuries were so horrific... Most Sundays she would bring my mum and my aunty to the hospital gardens to play, so the patients could watch from the balcony, and experience at least a trace of a normal life they could never experience ...... Still breaks my heart when I think of it, how much damage the human body can take and still go on.... My gran was my fkn hero!!

The reason why plastic surgery was developed. Not to make older people look young again. But to make terribly injured WW1 soldiers look somewhat "normal" again. Sir Harold Gillies is considered the pioneer of plastic surgery, he was from NZ.

Until recently, I thought we were nearing the end of old geezers sending young men with their whole lives ahead of them to be killed or maimed for life. I guess humans never change: First they glorify angry clowns and put them in power, then they let them send the nation's children to die. Proactive: If anyone thinks Churchill wasn't a monster as well, please read the history of India and his role in letting its people starve.

Yes. But also only men have gone to space, have expanded their possibilities way beyond their physical capabilities (like flying, being fast, living in all climate conditions, etc), have created uncountable amount of arts, etc. Yes, humans did and do unspeakably dumb and f****d up s**t. Absolutely. But they also did unimaginably great, fantastic and beautiful things. And all in between. It's easy to jump on the "I hate humans" train, but reality and nature aren't just black and white, they're colourful.

They still exist but only in captivity and a small number at that, so eventually they will either have to be hybridised or go fully extinct. These are the lions the Romans used in the arenas like the Colosseum so the rot set in a long time ago. We humans do not deserve this planet.

Doesn't really matter what t his ad is for -, using women's bodies to sell was used and still is used in even more base way. Researchers found seeing an attractive woman in an advert excites the areas of the brain that make us buy on impulse, bypassing the sections which control rational thought. Just Google ads used by Arby’s, Burger King and FAT Shack. If it's not a sexy women it's sexual innuendo.

Spent an evening 40 years ago on a cormorant fisherman's boat. Maybe it was Lao Huang's! One of the highlights of my life and my many years in China. Yangzhou was a tiny, quiet village then--only one tiny hotel where foreigners were allied to stay. We spent several nights there,as weary travelers who were the non-stop fascination of the locals everywhere we went. It was such a beautiful, peaceful spot then. Thanks for the memory!

My only knowledge of this craft as a child came from the book “Ping! The duck” - or whatever its full name was. It was my favourite book as a child, detailing the adventures of Ping, a very naughty duckling who lived on a big boat on the wide Yangtze River, and the adventures he had trying to reach his family after his “master” drew up the ramp one day before a Ping made it back to the boat (he was *always* last back to the boat because he wanted one last dive in the river, and he knew he risked being beaten by the boatmaster, or being left behind, but he had always made it before … not this day.) Ping told a story about encountering the cormorants, with rings around their necks to stop them from swallowing the fish they caught. If you enlarge this image you can see the ring around the bird’s neck.

@Bobatee the destroyer of bull5hit - 6 million Jews died. The Jewish population worldwide still hasn't recovered. Yes, we are a small minority, but this event is still important. If you can't conjure up a modicum of empathy for us, you should at least empathize with the white people who were effected by WW2 (you should also work on your lack of empathy). You're broadcasting your cruelty.

I would be wary of pointing to the ancient Greeks if you want to normalise any kind of sexual behaviour! It's a *lot* more nuanced than "it's all good", and much of what was acceptable then would today be classified as abuse.

Or they were 2 siblings who were blamed for breaking the family's favorite pot. When neither would admit fault, they were forced to look at each other until one confessed. As both of them were extremely stubborn, neither would admit to doing it. Years later, in a twist of events, it turns out the dog did it. :-) /s jk

I can see it happening. When I used to fight with one of my brothers, my mom would force us to "hug until you feel the love". We would try to squeeze the life out each other and whisper "just say you love me so she'll let us stop" cause neither of us wanted to be the one to say it first.

Office Life Before The Invention Of Autocad And Other Drafting Softwares

Office Life Before The Invention Of Autocad And Other Drafting Softwares

Prior to the release of AutoCAD in 1982, engineering drawings were all done by hand using different grade pencils, erasers, T-squares and set squares. Even after all the manual labor, if a change was required, the engineers and toolmakers had to start from scratch and make the sketches all over again. Nowadays, architecture designers and other drafters are mainly just clicking their mouse and keyboard and not hunched over on a giant desk wondering if any changes will be made to their final drafts.

It wasn't as difficult as this picture suggests. I did manual drafting for nearly 20 years prior to switching to CAD and never had to work in this awkward way. We had tilting adjustable drawing boards, not flat tables. We weren't using t-squares either.

My mom did this as a twenty-something year old, did so well at it that Boeing offered to double her pay so she wouldn’t quit when she got married. She quit anyway, was a great mom to me and my sister, finally divorced our dad and went back to drafting using CAD. She was brilliant at this method, too, and only stopped working when cancer came along. The corporation she was working for put her on leave, continued paying her full wage and kept her insurance up to support her until the day she died.

I worked in drafting for almost two decades prior to CAD and we had drawing boards that tilted to the angle you wanted, with Vemco drafting machines. I've never seen a drawing office where you had to use a flat board and t-squares. These people look more like they're reviewing drawings than working on them.

My grandmother did this! She was one of the first women (and POC) to become a drafter during WW2, in San Francisco, CA. All the men being gone meant these companies desperately needed people in the work force, so they started offering free school/training to pretty much anyone available. My grandmother saw a flier and ran home to tell her mother about the amazing opportunity. The problem was, you had to bring your own supplies, and they were so poor they couldn't even afford a pen. Her mother said if she could find a way to save up for a pen she could do it. Not only did she get a pen, she got hired after the training. There is a really cool photo of her in one of these kind of offices, where is is surrounded by men. She past last year, and I inherited her drafting table which I now use for my own work.

Not the first underwater camera by a long shot: Louis Marie Auguste Boutan successfully developed an underwater camera, with a welded metal frame, in 1893. Technically, he was taking underwater photographs at the that time, but some historians attribute the “first underwater portrait” by Boutan [that] was likely taken in 1899. That is the year he finalized a flash photography rig. We were still very much told this in 1990’s Germany, which is why we were usually quite scared of him anyway. The only part I wasn’t told was the North Pole elves thing, it was just that he’d take naughty children (the ones who were listed in his black book, as opposed to the good ones, who were listed in his golden book) away in his giant cloth sack. His helper, Knecht Ruprecht, would then beat the sack with his giant wooden club, which, as a child I just assumed would kill all the children inside the bag. I lived in Germany as a child/in my early teens, and we were made to believe that less than 30 years ago, no idea if they still tell their kids that. Would be interesting to hear from people who currently live in Germany.

Social Security Numbers in the US were relatively new (1930’s). Because the government stressed the importance of a SSN, some people got them tattooed on their body.

I think the evidence shows that they definitely were, and they frequently depicted early feminists as ugly and masculine as a way to bully them. Now where have I seen that before... *Thinks back to all those jokes about ugly masculine feminists I heard growing up* This collection is a mix, though, of very feminine-looking women and more masculine-looking women, so I don't think this collection of photos is guilty of insulting women because men felt threatened by them.

Shame, or even feeling like they won't be heard/understood when talking about it. IDK why T. Unnamable got downvoted so many times in the sub thread above, what they bring up isn't pretty but it's not untrue. There's so much pressure on men to be sexual overachievers that there have been cases where a male rape victim tries to tell his friends and they're like "lucky you!" We need to listen to and be supportive of ALL people who've been in this situation

Yeah. Even this site won't let me say the word that defines what was inflicted on me by older women, somehow, and some way, more than once, probably because of my own faults and problems. But men get raped. Just, period. Not always by women, but I don't think we need to discount anyone's past trauma, and chalk it up to something any of us would want in reality. Anyone saying in the comments below, "why doesn't this happen to me?", Needs to figure out a way to get laid on their own, because if this is the only way you see is possible, you have more issues than seem apparent. Get over your need for inter-sexual praise, and realize not all of us asked for it. Not all of us hoped for it. Not all of us felt so low, and lonely, they wished for rape on themselves. Somehow though, I admire the thought process and wish I could feel the same, because honestly it's a lot better than feeling this way.

As someone raised in a militant Mormon family & state… not knocking the male victim here… but.. they were ex lovers & he left her to go on a mission to please the parents. During his “abuse” he was participating & reciprocating. She clearly had mental health issues & stated the church made up the kidnapping to get him back into the mission field - a missionary having sex would be sent home. I can’t say if what was claimed is legit, knowing the church like I do, but this isn’t as clear cut as it sounds. What I do think is it clouds the cases of other men that may have legitimately been abused. When it involves religion, sex, & societal pressure in a closed society, I say just be careful what you choose to believe.

One person’s experience of a religion, any religion is not everyone’s experience. What people forget when they have a bad experience is that people are human in all walks of life. People need to treat others with kindness. When it’s hard because something bad happens and one person in authority deals badly with it no matter the company, religion, group, gender or any other identifying feature, that person is the person in the centre of the way that was dealt with, and in their humanity, they have to eventually find themselves culpable. That doesn’t make the gender, the organisation, religion or group responsible for the perpetrators behaviour. But unfortunately it does make them responsible for the clean up of that mess. Just like generational change happens, problems with understanding among families and the way we understand our own faith for many in all religions has changed by our understanding and our experiences. I’m sorry that you had this experience.

Gah that’s not what we meant by equality and recognition of sexual harassment. I’m so sorry to men who have faced this, sorry about the stereotypes. Sorry for the women also. Why can’t it all ever just be… equal?

Been to there. They make incredibly high quality products for themselves. There are companies in every industry that are famous for producing good-quality products and people regularly buy from them. While their good quality products are booming in business, so is their bad quality one. This is because many people from other countries who are too broke or cheap to buy good quality in their own countries settle for cheap imports, and then take out their frustration by insulting this country.

The Man In The Picture Is Dina Sanichar, Widely Believed To Be Raised By The Wolves

He was born in India and was found in the deep jungles of Uttar Pradesh by the hunters in 1872. They found him hunting alongside the wolves and noted that he was walking on all four of his limbs.

Yeah, seems like all the "raised by wild animals" stories are pretty questionable. I've looked for everything I could find on them and there's no good evidence any of the stories were quite what they they were made out to be.

There was the overseer of some orphanage who took two children with developmental disabilities and claimed they were found in the wild and were raised by wolves. The girls' names were Amala and Kerala, I think. They had some kind of physical disabilities that made them walk on all fours/crawl, also had some mental disabilities so they couldn't talk well and were mentally too young for their age. Naturally people visited the orphanage and took photos, et.c. It was later suspected to be a lie and that the overseer wanted money. Hopefully he was planning to use the money on that orphanage. Children raised by animals are rare, but it does happen. Most never mentally mature past around age 8 or so, and must be remanded to psychiatric facilities their entire lives (after rescue).

We should never underestimate a wolves ability to adapt, or a child's. Survival instincts of both human and wolf are strong. If a child is old enough to show an ailing wolf it can help and then the child acclimates themselves to the rules of a pack, new alliances can be forged. Not standard circumstances with animals, but possible.

Mexican Actress Maty Huitrón Photographed By Nacho Lopez In 195

Mexican Actress Maty Huitrón Photographed By Nacho Lopez In 195

This series was one of the multiple social experiments of the Mexican photographer to understand human behavior. In this case, it was about seeing the average reaction to an exuberant woman, the model chosen was the burlesque dancer Maty Huitron, who would later become an eminence of the performing arts in Mexico. The impact was so provocative that Nacho López's photos were awarded in 1957 by UNESCO, and later exhibited in stations of the Paris and Munich Metro.

And as an added bit to that fact - they are white because the original rubber is made from the latex ("sap") of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis)! This fluid is produced by the tree and is milky white. Now get your mind out of the gutter. XD

But I've never seen a boy wearing Mary Jane style shoes...that almost look patented leather from the shine..I mean, the kid sure looks like a boy from his hat to his socks...but those shoes just don't do it. Then again, he could have been from a less fortunate family who is wearing his sister's hand me down shoes because, well, they fit and it's better than going barefoot. Idk if this picture is also from 1898 but if so, lots of families who emigrated from Europe to the states showed up here with barely anything and had to seek out work and shelter. The lucky ones had a friend or family member who was already in the states who might help them out for a week or so once they arrived. But most lived in extremely crowded rooms and lived paycheck to paycheck and even lived on credit from local merchants acquired on a good word from a friend or neighbor. Shoes were often a luxury, especially while children were still growing. But it still looks odd to me. A boy in Mary Jane buckled shoes.

In an attempt to get people on their side, they often threw money into the streets of small towns. Since it was the depression, this caused people who didn't know better to think of them as "Robin Hood" figures. Now that we know all the facts, they are clearly evil murderers, but news traveled slowly back then.

22-Year-Old Lana Del Rey (Then Performing Under May Jailer) Photographed In 2007

Discussing meeting her in the same year, record label-owner David Nichtern said “When she first came to us she was playing plunky little acoustic guitar, had sort of straight blonde hair, very cute young woman. A little bit dark, but very intelligent. We heard that. But she very quickly kept evolving."

Victorian Era Bathing Machines From The 1890s

During this time, women were required to stay fully clothed until they got into a bathing machine in order to change into a swimsuit

Really? Why put the machine into the water then? At least in Germany the women usually went into a vehicle like that (without windows, open to the sky above and the Elements beyond), the vehicle was towed into the water and the lady disrobed and bathed naked inside of it. No need for a swimsuit

The ones above used in the UK were similar to those ones, however were basically smaller changing rooms on wheels, with ladders. Early on, both men and women would swim naked (but separate), so would go in clothed and change while it was pulled into the sea. They could then just enter the deeper water straight off the ladder and swim in the open sea, without being seen from the shore. Then as bathing costumes became the norm, it saved people used to being covered up feeling immodest being seen wading in and out of the shallow waters. Once it became the norm for men and women to swim together towards the end of the 19th century, they became redundant anyway, and were replaced with just huts on the beaches to change in.

Archeology, when done as an approved excavation, as here, means the artifact will be sent to a museum and studied. Grave robbing is done solely for profit, not knowledge or with respect to the owner and certainly no interest in its place in history. In this case the ring says “for/to Allah” and is made with colored glass. It was the only known Viking Age ring with an Arabic inscription to be found in the entire of Scandinavia.

The finger ring found in a 9th century Swedish grave is inscribed with Arabic Kufic writing. The letters appear to read “AL_LLH, researchers say, which they interpret as meaning “for/to (the approval of) Allah.”

I just read this off another site. This guy's was REALLY lucky he randomly found that square raft. "As the ship was sinking, Poon Lim grabbed a life jacket and jumped overboard before the ship’s boilers exploded. After approximately two hours in the water, he found an eight-foot square wooden raft and climbed onto it. The raft had several tins of biscuits, a forty-litre jug of water, some chocolate, a bag of sugar lumps, some flares, two smoke pots and a flashlight."

I'm trying to nail down the year from the costumes. I see a Darth Vader and Yoda, so after Empire Strikes Back (1980). But I also see a kid who looks like he dressed up as a character from Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon (1985). Also those cheap plastic masks were super popular in the mid '80s so I'm gonna go with '85 or '86.

The one thing I remember about costumes in the 80's was trying to breathe in the 1 inch slit on my Cookie Monster and Wonder Woman masks. You'd have to push up ur mask to wipe the sweat off ur face then pull it down to trick or treat. The outfit was basically a painted plastic looking hospital gown that tied at the neck. Good times for sure but truly a struggle. 😅

The Photograph Of Kurt Cobain In Tears Has Been Extensively Published

Tilton watched Cobain smash his guitar through an amplifier and walk offstage. He followed him backstage. The pent-up emotion ‘just had to go somewhere,’ says Tilton, and Cobain burst into tears. ‘What I really love about it is that it is a very real moment and he allowed it. Other artists would have said, ‘Not now, Ian, please.’ It is very unusual,” adds Tilton, ‘for anyone from a band to show such vulnerability.’

That pain is also what affected him enough that he wrote that music. See, if he never hurt, he wouldn't have created that music because what he *did* create (and the only way that you even know who he was) was based on those feelings of pain he suffered. How would you have it? 'Knowing' him for the music he was famous for that he made because he wanted to get the pain out, or the complete absence of him and the music you love because he never hurt in the first place so never created it?

Being a tunnel rat was one of the most dangerous jobs. You had one way in, and didn’t know if there was an ambush waiting for you, even if you threw a grenade in first (one of my brothers was a Marine who did two tours of Vietnam 1968-1970).

During The Vietnam War, Cannabis Was Consumed Because The Plant Grew In The Wild In Vietnam

During The Vietnam War, Cannabis Was Consumed Because The Plant Grew In The Wild In Vietnam

For that reason, many soldiers had their first experience smoking the drug, and it helped them continue fighting, “You get really stoned…. Then, you know, who like, who cares about the war?” Many military leaders also encouraged cannabis consumption when there were problems among their soldiers. Unlike alcohol, which was still the drug of choice, marijuana kept the soldiers mellow and focused, which helped resolve conflicts between men. When the soldiers smoked together, they used an unorthodox method involving a firearm by packing a bowl of marijuana in a shotgun chamber, soldiers smoked long drags together. We do not ever condone attempting this method to smoke.

This Is A Portrait Of Daniel Lambert Who Was At One Point Considered To Be The Heaviest Person In Human History

At the age of 18, Lambert began working as a prison guard and was much respected for his ability to befriend and help rehabilitate many of the prisoners. Despite being physically active, abstaining from alcohol, and not eating large amounts of food, Lambert continued to steadily gain weight. By 1805, he weighed a whopping 700 lbs. (320 kgs).

You never know. He may have had a non-functioning thyroid, and therefore practically no metabolism. I know when I run out of my thyroid meds, I start gaining weight like crazy—-up to 10 lbs a week, and it’s not like I’m eating an additional 5000 calories per day either. I don’t even eat 2000 calories in a day (more like 1600-1800 max, anything more than that and I start to feel sick from being overly full). I just have a very sluggish thyroid and a practically non-existent metabolism without the meds.

this happened at a time when gluttony and over indulgence wasn't common. If that were to happen today I would have a few more questions but in the 18th and 19th century nutrition was poor, one was more likely to be malnutritioned and skinny than 700lbs, No one could afford to eat themselves to 700lbs!

Considerable drama in the making of this photo--Stevie didn't want to be near Lindsay and Christine didn't want to be near her John. So Stevie's with Mick, Christine's with Lindsay, and John's by himself.

Models were like super stars back then and she could have easily made a demand that she would not be wearing fur. In the late 90's fur was already seen as for old and cruel ladies (by youthful people). The fur industry desperately tried to change this by giving away free fur coats to for example snoop dog or grooming/paying designers. I thought/think fur is disgusting so all actions together it worked. Very surprising it made a comeback. We already protested this s**t and decided killing animals for fur is ridiculous.
