I Watched A Dog Trapped In A Burning Neighborhood And We Pulled Him Out Just In Time

I was documenting the Eaton Fire near Pasadena when I heard something I didn’t expect frantic barking cutting through the sirens, smoke, and crackling flames.

I followed the sound and found a dog standing alone in his front yard, trapped behind a fence while homes around him burned. Firefighters were spraying nearby houses with water, thick black smoke rolling over the street, but the dog wouldn’t move. He just barked, terrified, as the heat closed in.

I realized quickly that if no one intervened, this dog wasn’t going to survive.

While first responders focused on stopping the fire from spreading, I called Chris Abkarian from the Whittier Dog Club. I told him exactly what I was seeing: a shaking dog, a burning neighborhood, and almost no time left. He didn’t hesitate.

Chris dropped everything and drove straight into the fire zone. When he arrived, the scene looked unreal orange flames, collapsing structures, ash falling from the sky. One house next to the dog’s yard was already burning to the ground.

The dog, later named Max, was frozen in fear. He wouldn’t let anyone near him at first. Chris moved slowly, spoke calmly, and eventually managed to leash him just as the fire crept closer.

Watching Max walk out of that yard felt like pulling a life out of the flames.

We transported him away from the fire and into safety at the Whittier Dog Club, where he was placed in a clean kennel, given food, water, and a moment to breathe. He joined other dogs who had been rescued or temporarily sheltered after their families were forced to evacuate.

Chris later told me how overwhelming it must have been for Max the thick soot, the choking smoke, the chaos.

“Dogs experience scent and smoke so much more intensely than we do,” he said. “I can’t imagine what he went through.”

The photos I took of Max spread quickly online. I didn’t expect that. But suddenly, people across Los Angeles were asking how they could help. Donations started pouring in treats, toys, food, blankets more than anyone anticipated.

Sasha Galperin from the Whittier Dog Club told me they were overwhelmed by the response.

“In the middle of all this destruction,” she said, “people still showed up for animals they’ve never met.”

Standing there, watching strangers come together because of one scared dog, I realized something: Max became a symbol. He couldn’t speak, but somehow his story did.

In a city surrounded by fire and loss, one rescued dog reminded us what humanity looks like when it shows up.

The Whittier Dog Club is now in contact with Max’s owners and working on next steps to reunite him safely. And every time I look back at those photos, I don’t just see a rescue I see a moment where compassion moved faster than the fire.
