When ever I hear of my friends who have had babies, I am always curious to know what their babies weight was, especially if it was a single baby, no twins etc.
When I hear the weight I smile and say, that was bigger than me! The new Mum most often gives me a curious look back and asks it is?

Yes! When I was born I was smaller than my size 8 women’s shoe! In 1976 babies born at 26 weeks were given 0 – 25% chance of survival. I was one of those babies. My birth weight was a whopping 1 pound 12 ounces, that dropped to 1 pound 6 ounces. My parents were asked if I had a name yet, as they wanted to baptize me. The nurses and doctors at the Neonate Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa wanted to baptize me because they were fearful that I would not live 24hrs.

Different weights I was while in the NICU

I sure did show those doctors a thing or two.

Visiting the NICU at CHEO in June 2015, it is now named after my Neonateologist who saved my life, a man my family owes much gratitude to. I never got to meet him personally to thank him, he passed away a few years ago.
