IN TIME- slow shutter photography

My camera is moving from six to twelve seconds, painting time and landscape. My speed while photographing roads is up to 120 km/h. Slow shutter speed shapes and simplifies the image. Photos become as an experience of the landscape. When the details are lost, the essential is what remains, both in the photographer’s movement in space and time.

In basic photo it stops the time, the shorter the slice of time, the more accurate is the moment in photo. So I’m doing the opposite when I’m shooting, I am stretching the time. Thanks to the long shutter speed, motion lines, noise and blur show me a different picture of the relationship between time and place. The mobile phone’s camera allows you to capture and further process an instant experience. I act like a painter in a way, I can influence the image with my hands and feet on the move. I’m a light-painting photographer or, in fact, a painter using a camera.

I’m using on my mobile phone because of its convenient. I can’t get same result with SLR. I like the trace of the Slow Shutter Cam app. It kinda glues images on top of each other and simulates long exposure time in a unique way.

As I drive through the roads, I shoot the seemingly dull road and the sky. I don’t compose pictures when I’m shooting. I’ve been shooting these slowshutter shots for five years. The car movement is much faster than walking. If the speed of the car is 100 kilometers per hour, it means 27.8 meters per second, then the distance moved in one picture is about 167 metres during the six-second exposure.

The picture always has two dimensions: width and height. The third dimension, space and depth is always an illusion. The photo also has also a fourth dimension, time. I’m trying to get towards the last point of photography, where is the boundary between painting and photo?

Exhibition about my photography stars at 3.10.2020 in Tampere, Valokuvakeskus Nykyaika.
