I love to design my own crochet patterns and I love Christmas, so designing a 6.5 foot tall Christmas tree made from granny squares was a natural. I didn’t want just another tabletop tree, mind you. It had to be HUGE. I wanted to use it in place of my regular tree and be able to put presents under it.

I started by making the squares. I wanted to use all Christmas colors but I found that a little too limiting, so I threw in some black and white. There are over 200 granny squares on this crocheted tree and anyone who has made granny squares knows that means a ton of ends. It took me less time to make the squares than it did to weave in all those ends.

Then came time to attach the squares. I started with a general triangle shape, then put it up on the frame and added or deleted squares as needed. I used a special zigzag granny stitch to join them, which made the seams nearly invisible.

But how to top it? It seemed to me that a hand crocheted tree deserved a hand crocheted topper, so I came up with this star. It’s really made up of 10 diamond shapes joined together and lightly stuffed.

I spent 3 months and 18 skeins of yarn making this guy but I’m really happy with the results. It has become a regular part of our Christmas celebration and a source of pride for me.
