I Created These Illustrations To Remind Ourselves To Stop Telling Little Girls That They’re “So Cute” All The Time
So I got wonderful news a couple of weeks ago: my brother is expecting a baby girl pretty soon! Since then, I’ve been obsessed with finding the first special gift I wanted to create as the proud auntie I’m becoming. After a bit of thinking, it inspired me to start this series of illustrations.
The goal behind it is to remind everyone that constantly telling little girls that they’re “cute” might not be such a great idea. Let’s put it this way: little girls can do and be a million different things and they have an incredible potential. Being cute is just a tiny little part of who they might be and it doesn’t need to be constantly put up front.
I believe it is essential to draw their attention to other positive aspects of their personalities and to let them know there are other very valuable qualities they should be proud of. But by constantly repeating the same thing over and over again, we are, in a way, convincing them that there isn’t. I tried to find other words to replace this on-going “cute” term and I created a small illustration related to each of them. From curious, to smart, creative, kind, funny, brave or confident, the options are endless.
Do you have any other ideas? Please, let me know, I’d be glad to build a list which, one day, will be so long we won’t even remember to pronounce the word “cute” in the first place!
